OMG......... a star QB got preferential treatment..........what's next??????....he'll date beautiful women and get commercial endorsements

Pure and utter blasphemy!!!

In all seriousness though, this type of thing happens all the time, and in every profession.

Sure, Bernstein (and a long list of other people) may be "more qualified" than Tony. But in the real world, that just doesn't matter. CBS is looking out for CBS. Tony Romo will drive ratings 10000X more than Bernstein or any other potential Simm's replacement. People can be upset all they want, but it's reality. Everybody knows it. It comes across as petty for her to complain about it the way she did.

What a whiner; only a journalist would actually think anyone tunes in to hear what the broadcasters have to say. No one selects the game based on those goofs. CBS was smart; Romo could be replacing anyone and it would still be a boost in the ratings...at least for the first season. He's new; he's famous; he's goofy; he's been on the front page for a good while; everyone will tune in hoping to hear more inside information about everything from Cabo to his back and his decision. If he says anything intelligent about the game, that will just be a bonus, as it is with all the dufus broadcasters.

Fox kicks the living crap out of CBS in football ratings.

This was well worth the risk.

And our sense of labor fairness?
Romo is mortal. He is akin to Danny White, brilliant then mundane. But without the charisma.
My sense, blokes, is that Romo has been given a free pass, both as a failed QB in Dallas and now as a CBS broadcaster.
Blimey! A very capable and hard working broadcaster Bonnie Bernstein, took Tony to task for usurping a prime broadcasting gig from capable EXPERTIENCED men and women who have the ability and experience. Google it!
Bonnie, had she wanted to QB the Cowboys would not be received kindly. Yet we are expected to accept an amateur, Tony Romo, to replace Phil Simms.
And I won't duck. I can and will suffer the slings and arrows from those who are into entitlement.
Before Phil Simms had that job, he was a retired QB amateur broadcaster just like Tony Romo. Bonnie Bernstein didn't complain when Phil got the job so she has no excuse to complain now. She wasn't promised that position and was never on track to get it.

I know I'd be totally cool with it if some popular newbie with zero experience got the top spot while many others who have labored for years cutting their professional chops, including myself, were completely bypassed in the process. Does Bonnie think we live in a meritocracy or something?

What makes you think Romo is going to do an "amateur" job? If you listened to the CBS/Romo news conference, they auditioned Romo two years ago at a party and were astounded at how he was capable of immediately breaking down what is happening on the field and deftly explaining what we are seeing. He is experienced even more than Bonnie at doing what they want him to do... live analysis of the game.

Um, as to not complaining when Simms first got the job, Bernstein was probably in her early 20s and not in the running for this high a position due to her tender age and rampant sexism in sports and elsewhere.
But, blimey, unlike Romo, she has paid her dues as a magna cum laude with a degree in broadcast journalism. And then in the broadcasting trenches for a quarter of a century.
And I don't get the sense she is angry because she pursued the CBS job, but angry for those who have paid their dues --- especially women --- and made their bones working for small then bigger sports outfits for decades.
In this case the job was given purely on celebrity and not viability or experience or being deserving.
It is simple sexism in the case of women and the good old boy network in the case of qualifications of hundreds of others.
As to Bernstein not being on track to get the job, I can see that. And Romo was on track since he week Dak won the starting position? Hmmm.
Bloke, this is naked celebrity at work. Romo is the newest Ivanka Trump.

I did not writer yhat Romo would do an amateur job, only that Romo, today, is an amateur.
And you say Romo cut his teeth in broadcasting based on an audition at a party?????
Give me a break!
To be happy for your hero is one thing. To say Romo is more deserving than a hundred others is lunacy.

I'm not one that buys the argument that the only way to "pay your dues" is through academic achievement and on the job tenure. Romo's experience on the field and in the tape room is ever bit as value to qualify him to be a live action analyst of football. He's been preparing to do this job since the first time he was a QB(over 20 years ago).

Yes, maybe he will succeed in broadcasting ... Let's give him a decade to succeed.

I didn't say it, CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus said it when he proudly announced Tuesday that Romo would be joining their team. Listen to the news conference. I just passed the information to you.
