Understood. For the record I did not condone spending a gazillion on Vernon, but a strong offer to Williams or even Long on a short deal would make everyone feel better than the prospect of Ryan Russell and/or gawd forbid Jeremy Mincey.

They tried to get cute. Mario Williams 3 yrs/22 million probably gets it done, Chris Long 1yr/6mill at the end of week one of FA probably gets it done.

And no they wouldn't have stopped Rodgers even if Bryant's catch stood. They couldn't even get the ball back with 4 plus minutes left on the clock.

After getting an offer from the Pats, Long cancelled his flight and decided not even to meet with Dallas.

Not sure about the once super Mario. 2 years, 17 million and 12 mil guaranteed with Miami is pretty good money but not crazy.

I think they needed to be more aggressive. If you liked Long- go get him. Don't sit around and wait for the Pats to trade Jones and sign him.

Just remember we have Jerry "low ball" Jones. I love Jerry but he lost his 'Moxie' when we passed on Moss.

It's not Jerry... Stephen is carrying around the "cash bag" now and his father just has to nod. If Stephen and Jason say
no, Jerry just meanders over to the bar.

If this ends up being similar to the Irving acquisition, I will be excited.

Irving is 22, was a free player, signed off the Practice Squad, and has a $525,000 cap hit. We'll also hold his contract rights for the next 2 years after 2016.

Mayowa is going to cost close to $2M and will count towards the compensatory draft pick equation.

They may be equal talents (which I don't think they are), but they are not the same type of acquisition at all.

After a couple of days of trying, it looks like the Dallas Cowboys have finally gotten defensive end Benson Mayowa into Valley Ranch. The Oakland Raiders restricted free agent was reported to be a target for them, but it took a bit to get him to Dallas. Now it is being reported that he is going to get an offer from the Cowboys.

The key is going to be what the Raiders decide to do about him. They can match the offer and keep him, but the Cowboys may have already gotten an idea of what they intend to do. In any case, until Oakland makes a call on Mayowa, this is just what it says, an offer. Mayowa is seen as a physically talented prospect who has had limited opportunities. He is not the complete answer to the need to bolster the Cowboys' pass rush, but would at least help fill the current hole there. The team still can re-sign Jack Crawford, as well...

Mayowa is going to cost more than $2 milllion. His Raider tender is already 1.67.

Do RFAs on an offer sheet count towards compensatory selections? I thought it was only expiring contract UFAs, but I could be wrong.

from Over the Cap....

These players that qualify are known as Compensatory Free Agents (CFAs), and this is perhaps the provision that trips up most people who unfamiliar with the process. Players who are cut are the most common example of free agents not becoming CFAs, but other methods of disqualification, such as a Restricted Free Agent not given a tender, also exist. In its most general sense, players only become Compensatory Free Agents if they are able to leave their old team against that team’s will. (However, one notable exception are team options that void a contract; see Special Cases below.)

Cowboys sign Benson Mayowa to offer; Raiders have 5 days to match
5:34 PM ET

ESPN Staff Writer

IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys have signed restricted free agent defensive end Benson Mayowa to an offer sheet, according to sources, and now have to wait to see if the Oakland Raiders will match.

Mayowa visited the Cowboys' Valley Ranch facility on Friday and had a physical before signing the offer sheet. The Raiders have until midnight ET on Wednesday to match.

Because he was not drafted in 2013, the Cowboys will not owe the Raiders any compensation. Oakland gave Mayowa the right-of-first-refusal tender worth $1.671 million. The Raiders will have the cap space necessary to match the offer so it will come down to whether they want to pay him.

There's no compensation for losing this guy.

Also, he's a young, smallish speed DE, who in limited playing time, actually had a pretty good # of tackles and two sacks. I think he's the kind of guy who can help fill the gap till Gregory returns, keeping DLaw on the left side ... It puts us in a decent position in case we don't like the DE opportunities that arise in the draft.

I'm afraid they seriously overpaid due to being jilted by almost every free agent and the fact that if you don't overpay RFAs then you are just wasting your time. Their current team will match anything reasonable. If they don't, he probably isn't worth having. Not a good situation all around to let yourself get into.
