I'm bringing home an 8 week old cockapoo on Sunday. This will be my first pet so I don't know anything about what to buy or how to train her. Can I get some recs on what to buy for her.

You have a new things to keep you busy while you're not watching NFL games in the future!

That's not a real cat?

We used to own bengals (f4 Asian Leopard Cats) when I was growing up, thought that was about as exotic as it got for domesticated cats. But that thing...

I've had maine coons and exotics my entire life. You can get MC's that big but they don't tend to live that long; it's heartbreaking having a friend die at 8 years old. The one I have now is still quite big, 17 lbs, but she is 12 and not showing age at all.

So that picture is real, Fuzzy? What a remarkable cat. I'll look into them. I do hear you on how unfortunate it is to own a pet that doesn't have a long life (i.e. Great Danes/large breed dogs and hip-displacement).

Have you ever considered a bengal? The funnest, smartest, and most spazzy cat you'll ever own. They're a bit wild as kittens (read: skittish and will strike you), but grow into the most lovable, psycho cats (will climb your drapes, rest in high areas, want a bath etc) that purr in your lap. Beautiful color pattern.

(Sorry, Zordon!)

Yep.

Lost our pure breed Maine Coon 15lb, female at only 8 years old... Heart gave out.

Is that a further generation of an actual Bengal/cat crossbreed? I mean, is that big, pretty orange cat part of this heritage or another cat with the same name?

It's a third, but mostly fourth generation Asian Leopard Cat. No permit required. Just a rad breed. We got ours from a lovely breeder in Hemet, CA. JoJo passed, but Bengi is still alive and kicking at my dad's house. Going on 18 years old!

A ridiculously awesome cat to own: http://www.hdw-inc.com/ourcats.htm

They are so way out. Unlike any cat I've ever owned, including Siamese, which are awesome in their own right.

The guy is not that big so its a bit of an optical illusion but there are lines that go well over 22 lbs.

Never thought about a bengal. I am partial to exotics and maine coons having been around them my entire life.

Maine coons will do much the same when kittens except the aggressive behavior. That is a no go for the lady of the house. I'm trying to talk her into a german shepherd atm.

That is cool but I want a real Bengal

where do you put the pads?

i bought a crate with a divider. should i let her sleep on one side of the crate and then put the pads on the other side of the crate? i'm just really confused how this potty training will work. especially with me working/out of the house 8 hours a day.

Get a crate that is big enough to allow the dog to turn around in it, but not much more than that. Use that to train the dog to not go in the house. Dogs generally don't go where they sleep. It will suck royally for a day and a half, but it will work. The dog will cry and wail all night the first night, then will settle down about halfway through the second night.

You can never own a cat, the cat owns you. It's not something a man should own unless his woman insists and then only if he never has to take care of it. I was going to give some sage advice about raising a puppy into an adult dog but @Tabascocat has already knocked it out of the park.

Congrats on the new family member. I love having dogs. They will test your patience, but, at the end of the day they are literally one of your friends. Lots of good advice in here. I prematurely lost our Samoyed Glacier at 9 years old earlier this year and it was one of the hardest weeks of my life. Never thought an animal could bring that kind of connection. It truly is amazing.

I've always wanted a maine coon or exotic cat, but I just refuse to do anything other than rescue animals. I've got two cats and two dogs that are all rescues and have been great animals.
