Broaddus: Grading Vaughan, Randles Pass Protection, And Other Offensive Notes

As with every team, if the Romo gets hurt, they're done.

But they need to find the next guy soon.

Vaughan has been the biggest disappointment so far in camp. Ive even heard that Showers could beat him out

Ugh... when even Brian Broaddus can't find anything good to say about Vaughan, you know he must have looked bad... :(

Mackenzy Bernadeau continues to perform well, whether he has had to line up at center or guard. There were several snaps during the one-on-one pass rush drills where his technique and power were outstanding. When Bernadeau gets in trouble, his legs tend to get straight and he has trouble adjusting to the rusher, but that wasn't the case at all in this practice. His knee bend, footwork and power were all in order and the results were right where they needed to be.

I hated our OL strategy at the time, but I have to be honest, really glad this guy is a depth player for us.

It was wholly unrealistic to expect that they would strike gold back to back with undrafted free agent quarterbacks. What Romo has accomplished is very rare. With Vaughan also coming from a small school where he didn't face top competition, his uphill climb is even more steep.

I don't think that the QB of the future is on the roster. Not exactly earth shattering news.

I was thinking the same thing. If the eternal optimist says you are struggling.....

Disappointing to hear about Vaughn struggling...and nice to hear about Randle improving on the blitz pickup. But, it still might not mean much of anything.

I love these tidbits from camp, but it's all too easy to make something out of nothing with how saturated we are with content nowadays.

How many undrafted QBs have ever made the Pro Bowl? Count them on the fingers of one hand going back a very long time.

and in the last 30 years how many QBs drafted after the 2nd rd have made the pro bowl? even fewer.

Brutal reality is that you have to spend a 1st to have any decent chance to get a franchise QB

Does Showers have any kind of chance to make the team? Good small time college QB.

Well, Showers was supposed to be the starter at Texas A&M three years ago going into fall camp. However, Kevin Sumlin and Kliff Kingsburry had "a good feeling" about Johnny Manziel. Johnny wins Heisman and Showers transfers. He's known for throwing a really tight spiral for what ever that is worth? I wish him the best.

well it looks like we only carry two qbs again this year. that might save a space for a extra corner or defensive end spot.

It's unfair to judge Showers by his numbers at UTEP. After Jordan Leslie transfered to BYU, UTEP had virtually no legit receiving options for him. Plus, UTEP had a pretty good run game that they leaned on.

I am biased (UTEP alum) but he just has something. He's well composed and calm when he's out there. Even when things get rough, he can keep an offense focused. He's mature. He does have an OK arm. He's mobile enough, but not necessarily a running QB.

Physically, he fits the Romo mold, so hopefully he can make the most of the opportunity and learn what he can from Romo about how to be a QB at their size.

Again, I'm biased and I'm not saying he's the next big thing in Dallas, but I think he's worth developing or at least keeping around a year if Vaughan looks like he's taken a step back in his development

I never knew where the love for the kid came from. But we have 4 preseason games with more TC left so there is time.

Personally, I was just hoping that Vaughan might eventually be good enough to be a career #2 for us.

I think Vaughn must be the king of the lowball -- every time I've seen him play, he seems like he can't get it up. (No double meaning intended -- lol.)
