Yesterday, I listened to Brian Broaddus on "Talking Cowboys" that they might have serious interest in Eric Winston as a RT for the line if things go badly in the draft. IMVHO, I think the boys will try and acquire some additional OL help when vet prices and demand falls after the draft. Just like last year.

That goes double if, as expected, Free is released after June 1st for cap savings.

What does if things go badly in the draft mean... Is Jerry planning on running the draft or is he going to allow Jason to continue to build this team properly?

I think he means we dont find a starting lineman. Doesn't mean its a 'bad' draft though.

Meaning, if the players that Dallas have targeted on their board are gone.

I think it means that if when our picks come the players we have graded out are gone and rather then reach we take other positions.

Weight the good drafts against the bad drafts of the Cowboys over the last umpteen years and then just play the odds. Jerry does not like to draft lineman in the early rounds...that's a fact. He likes "steak & sizzle" players. I hope he lets Jason do the right thing though but since he writes the checks, doubt it!!!

Seems like a dumb strategy to me unless they have been promised by Winston that he will not sign a contract before then. Why wouldn't they just cut Free now, designate him a June 1st cut, and use the cap space they currently have to sign Winston? That way they aren't stuck in the draft looking for a OT they think can start right away. They could instead look for a safety, RB, OG, and DT that could help right away and wait on a mid round OT that could be developed and serve as the swing guy.

To me, this means if they can't snag Lane Johnson in the 1st OR Terron Armstead in the 2nd. They have a lot of interest in Armstead.

You don't get that cap relief tell June 1st.

It's not that Jerry doesn't like to take OL early, it's the fact that they rate OL lower on their board than other teams do. This was proven the year their draft board leaked and all the OL went 2-3 rounds earlier then where Dallas had them. That means an OL is never on top of their board when they are on the clock. I think Jerry would be fine taking an OL anywhere if he was at the top of their board. It just doesn't happen very ofter due to their rating procedures for OL.

They currently have cap space to sign Winston. I think I did type current cap space.

Looks like Clabo is about to hit the market as well. That makes three decent to good RTs on the market. I don't see why they would wait if they want to upgrade that spot and cut Free loose unless all these guys want huge money and they'd rather have a guy on a rookie deal.

I think they just want to see how the draft falls. If you sign one of those guys and draft say Lane Johnson you would be in a tough spot.

I think if we go oline in the first that means we release free and start Parnell and sign a low level rt to back him up. I think broaddus means if we can't get one of the top guards or fluker early then we go after Winston to cut free loose.

thats exactly what I was thinking. Lets just designate Free a June 1st Cut and use that money to sign Winston. Right off the bat we've upgraded our Offensive Line now can you imagine getting Warmack or Cooper at Guard than some how landing Schwenke the Center from Cal. Whewwww no we are pretty solid at 4 out 5 OL positions which is an immediate upgrade. I've been saying this. Personally if I were running things we would sign Brandon Moore for Guard and Winston Justice for Tackle and than look for Warmack or Cooper in the 1st Round. Doug Free would be gone on June 1st.

Only thing that makes sense to me.

If I'm Jerry, I go through the draft and hope to get either a starting G or T in the first or second, and then sign a FA at the other spot. Upgrade both positions while still being flexible enough to address other needs, like DT and S, in the draft.

It's a chess match.

Sign him now for cheap (Cowboys have upper hand) or wait to see what the draft holds. If they can't draft a tackle, then Winston's price goes up because he now holds the upper hand.

I figured they liked Parnell so drafting a tackle was not a high priority, ie. not a first or second round pick.

I still don't know why they have had Moore come in to chat. They need an upgrade at both guard positions. Sign Moore and draft Cooper and that is a very successful off-season for the OL.

This certainly makes sense. I just hope we get who we target.
