thats exactly what I was thinking. Lets just designate Free a June 1st Cut and use that money to sign Winston. Right off the bat we've upgraded our Offensive Line now can you imagine getting Warmack or Cooper at Guard than some how landing Schwenke the Center from Cal. Whewwww no we are pretty solid at 4 out 5 OL positions which is an immediate upgrade. I've been saying this. Personally if I were running things we would sign Brandon Moore for Guard and Winston Justice for Tackle and than look for Warmack or Cooper in the 1st Round. Doug Free would be gone on June 1st.
"Designating" him a June 1 cut is for HIS benefit, not the team's. His available salary cap space is still not available UNTIL he is cut on June 1.

To me, this means if they can't snag Lane Johnson in the 1st OR Terron Armstead in the 2nd. They have a lot of interest in Armstead.
Yeah but is Armstead an immediate plug and play guy?

I think they just want to see how the draft falls. If you sign one of those guys and draft say Lane Johnson you would be in a tough spot.

If you can draft Lane Johnson you don't need another OT IMO.

Evan Silva ‏@evansilva 13m Andre Smith was @PFF's No. 1-rated right tackle in 2012. Tyson Clabo was Top 5, and Eric Winston was No. 9. They are all free agents.

Wow, Clabo too?

I would be ECSTATIC if we were able to sign one of them and focus on other needs in the draft.

Boy- I think Smith on a two year deal would be awfully motivated and very good. Wonder what he is looking for? I bet the Iggles will give it to him if they don't get a lineman in the draft so it might be a moot point.

It's very clear that PFF misevaluates a lot of players. For fans, the best indicator of the quality of a player is what contract he signs. It's funny when fans complain about teams for overpaying or underpaying players, when the proper course is actually to assume all players are paid correctly, since we have no better method of evaluation at our disposal.

Unless you're a professional scout, you probably won't know enough about the intricacies of technique and scheme to be able to evaluate the value of a player. A player can be successful because the scheme is altered to accomodate their weakness, whereas another player can get beat a lot but he is asked to do more difficult things. Very hard for non-scouts to evaluate.

Even Greg Cosell, who watches ridiculous amounts of film and is as informed as any non nfl person, constantly phrases his evaluations with "if a gm values this" etc etc, because how each attribute is valued by teams and why is more complicated than even just scouting.

Personally, I would address needs through free agency and take the best talent available regardless of position at #18. What do I know, though, Jerry is the personnel expert so if drafting a tackle to fill a need is there thinking then they know best!

They currently have cap space to sign Winston. I think I did type current cap space.

Not if they want to sign draft picks.

If they sign Winston, then Free is a June first cut, which will give Cowboys plenty of room.
