Why is it that the Cowboys always have trouble acquiring corners?

For years they have had bad corners. I can't remember the last time they had a legitimate All Pro CB, post Deion. And no matter where they get their corners, UDFA, mid round picks, high draft picks, UFA, they all play like UDFAs.

With the re-signing of Claiborne and the likelihood Carr could return the Cowboys are bringing back all the pieces for another 4-12 campaign. Surprised they didn't ink Cassel to a multiyear deal to keep him around.

The team could be hedging their bets on the corners by resigning Mo and retaining Carr, and still might draft Ramsey to be a safety. If that is the case then you have three serviceable corners on the team in Scandrick, Mo and Carr, and two potentially difference making safeties in Jones and Ramsey. If so the back end performance might be lot better, and there is no dead money eaten this year on Carr, but what a piss poor contract that was in retrospect.

On the other hand the Cowboys might also draft a corner in the middle rounds (3-5) and make Carr expendable. I know everyone wants an edge rusher in this draft, but by all accounts this isn't the strength of this draft class. I would love to see us get two more interior DL in the top 3 or 4 rounds of this draft.

Now that Claiborne is back, we've got leverage on Carr. He either takes a cut to market value, or we do a deal with a replacement player and cut him outright.

Carr will see this and be reasonable.

And, for the record, he's not an awful player. He's a solid CB who struggles with crossing routes. That's it.

Then just ask the other teams to stop running crossing routes

Or cover them differently. As they say, football's a chess game. You try to take advantage of things their defenders don't do well.

I'm all for upgrading Carr's spot. Just point me at the guy who does everything well and doesn't cost a lot and tell me where to sign.

Maybe it's not really his fault since we don't run crossing routes in practice or at all for that matter...

We are great at acquiring them, the problem is once they get here they can no longer cover anyone, make a tackle nor actually intercept a pass. But if you look at Jerry's history, there is a long road of lousy corners that have never done anything for us nor anyone else in the league.

Carr has been borderline terrible the past two seasons. When he's not giving up plays he's committing PI's. He hasn't had an INT in 2 seasons. Receivers are able to spin around which causes him to lose site of the ball resulting in completions and PI's. He's been one of the liabilities in our secondary.

I used to blame Campo and the way he coached DBs to play the man and not the ball but it seems like it carried right over to Marinelli's D.

carr, mo, wilber....this can't be life. this franchise has no idea what it's doing.

Every team in the league has value vets playing such positions. Carrs's the only contract that needs to be addressed, and it looks like it will be.

I think we are cutting him, we are just waiting because we can save more cap money by cutting him later before the season starts.

We all agree he is overpayed, but there are very few cbs that arent. Jenkins just got 62 million, and we know at times he has gotten burned, admitted to be lazy, and even comes at an off the field gamble. The problem with cutting carr is you save 6 to 7 million this year, but then you have to replace him and pay a very average corner that same money likely over a few years. If we dont like any of the other available options and cut Carr now we have Scandrick, Claiborne, and Jones. Considering Scandrick and Claibornes injuries that provides little insurance.

As I said in another post. Carr and Mo are perfect corners for Marinelli's defense. Marinelli likes his defense to get no sacks, turnovers and don't even think about stopping the run. First page of the Defensive playbook has in big bold letter: "Don't waste energy stopping the run". In Marinelli's defensive system the players are told to run around the field but at no time make any football type plays.

Carr is the team captain and role model of this bold new strategy.

You do realize that last season was probably the first time in Marinelli's years as defensive coordinator that he had this tough of a time forcing turnovers?

The defense was never going to get a lot of turnovers because opposing offenses played us conservative. Offenses played us very conservative and protected the ball and waited for us to beat ourselves on offense. It worked most games. I have no doubt in my mind that Marinelli can coach a defense to force turnovers, I have many years of proof to back that up.
