That 2001 defense might be on of the worst ever which sounds weird because at 31st you might assume that someone had to be worse off that year but that's not the case. There were only 31 teams that year and Indy allowed 486 points which has been surpassed by only 3 teams since that time. That's 30 points per game back when the league average was 20. Relative to the league average, it's the worst performance since 2001 by allowing 1.5X the league average.
That was the year of the infamous Jim Mora playoffs rant. If you listen early on he says "don't blame that one on the defense."
That year his son Jim Mora jr was coaching the defense. Mora Senior was getting pressure from the front office to fire or strip his son of power because they were so bad defensively. Then Mora senior gets defensive about his sons coaching and in that rant he ends up throwing Peyton Manning under the bus.
