Bentley was just on NFL Access saying he felt better than he ever had. Shame to get $6M/year to play for your favorite team and then blowout your knee for 2 years on the first play of the first practice in TC, then have to ask for and get your release b/c the team moved on. If it weren't for all that money, I'd feel sorry for him.

1. He hasn't played for two seasons so what makes anyone think he could take anyone's place on any roster yet.

2. He passed the Cleveland Browns physical not ours or anyone else's and it does make a difference with different teams.

3. Him starting at OG or OC at this point is dreaming. He may fell great or whatever but he definitely isn't in football shape.

4. Best he probably hopes for is a backup on a team with a chance to compete for a starter position.

5. Money!!!! How much does he want or is he willing to play for a team that has a great shot at a Super Bowl with maybe being on a quality backup.

Him replacing Kosier is just crazy. Kosier is much better than he is at the moment but down the line that could change.

Well unless he has priors, failed drug tests, or at least a weapons charge he has no chance here.....

He reportedly punched Tyson Walter in the face when they were college teammates, so he's got that going for him.

2 years removed from the knee surgery is a good place to be.

There is no way you know what kind of shape he has kept himself in.

Kosier is a JAG - always has been and always will be. Bently IF truly healthy would be an upgrade over Kosier by the end of camp IMO.

I'd be very willing to give Bentley a chance, if he pans out then he would be a terrific addition to the line and if he doesn't...well then we lost a roster spot for a year or two.

Potential pro bowl player vs. a bottom of the lineup roster spot.

Reward > Risk.

I don't like our backup OC Proctor. Bentley would be a big upgrade over him; plus he could also challenge Kosier probably next year. As for not playing football for 2 years, I guess you didn't like the Colombo hiring by Parcells back in late November 06. Colombo was drafted by the Bears in 03, was seriously injuried as their starting OT in middle of season & wasn't physically sound enough until 07 season when he started at RT for us. And nobody ever said Colombo was as good as Bentley. But agree he'll want to go to a team with a legit chance to start if he can pass their physical, etc.

Bad infection after surgery? Did Tyson Walter go visit him in recovery or something?

For a modest deal you have to look at this guy. He was a probowler and ran afoul of the Browns medical staff. If hes beaten the staph hes something like 18 months post op on that knee which means it should be ready to go.

He would beat out Kosier if he returns to form.

BROWNS RELEASE BENTLEY

LeCharles Bentley’s two-year tenure with the Cleveland Browns has come to an end, without Bentley ever playing a down for the team.
Bentley’s agent, Jonathan Feinsod, said he asked for and received his release today.

“LeCharles came back to Cleveland to be in integral part of the Cleveland Browns, his hometown team,” Feinsod said, per Mary Kay Cabot of the Plain Dealer. “Through no fault of the Browns at all, they didn’t know if LeCharles was going to come back or not and they moved on with their plans. But this is not the same team LeCharles signed with. They have commitments to other players. LeCharles is not ready to be an insurance policy at this point.”

The 28-year-old Bentley passed a physical yesterday and expects to play in 2008. It just won’t be with the Browns.

A native of Cleveland, Bentley signed a free-agent contract with the Browns in 2006, only to suffer a serious knee injury that kept him out for the entire season. After developing a staph infection in the knee, he also missed all of 2007.

So much for the great sports journalism of the NFL Network. The last news cycle has been showing him and interviewing him and saying how he is back and ready to go, etc.

I agree with that 100%.

The question is... would he take a modest deal to go to a famous franchise that is known for being patient on second chances and that has a chance to go all the way?

He just might be willing.

I know but its the same "cycle." On tv a news cycle is often the last half of one day and the first half of the next day. Sometimes a news cycle can last more than 24 hours.

And besides even if its yesterday my point still is the NFL Network missed something, unless it was a total fluff piece.

Yesterday nobody knew that he was going to be released today. They will air a new show at 6:00 (central). During commercial breaks they probably have already shown updates today of his release. Something they have done in the past.

Walter was a chump and had it coming.

I'd definitely investigate. Bentley was a great player at one point not that long ago. As much as I like Procter, I'd have no problems replacing him.

If he got in shape, he could definitely challenge Kosier for a job. Maybe not right away, but definitely later in camp/season or next year.

It'd be nice to try to get him for a reasonable two year deal.

So the Browns stuck by him for two years and put him on IR and paid him to rehab, and then release him once he clears a physical? Something tells me they don't think he's nearly as able and ready to play in the NFL as he thinks he is. Nobody wanted to see him come back and play football more than the Browns, and Phil Savage is no idiot.

This was a good cap space saving room for Cleveland. They previously reduced Bentley's contract from 6 years to 3 years. This gave Bentley a minimum base salary and about $4 million dollars in incentives that he will now not reach. The Browns were about $4 million dollars under the cap. They may now have cap room to address their thin secondary.

Outstanding depth? The starters are all 1 foot in the grave. Your depth includes worthless Parcells cast-off Fabini and 2-time bust Todd Wade. Then you have a rookie who is nothing more than a question mark. And then you have Heyer who looked good for a UDFA... but certainly struggled when starting. Heyer may turn out to be a decent starter, in which case he would be better than your current starting RT who should retire and be the AARP's national spokeman on osteoporosis screening.

The only thing that the Commanders O-line is outstanding at is bingo.

If they did this just for cap space wouldn't it have made more sense to do this in February before the free agency period started when there were players who could actually contribute on the market? What secondary help is looking for employment in mid June?
