Read Becomes First Major Change
Posted by mickshot at 12/31/2008 1:53 PM CST on truebluefanclub.com

Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips on Monday talked of change taking place around here after the Cowboys' disappointing 9-7 season, and it hasn't taken long for the first change to occur, the Cowboys announcing on New Year's Eve special teams coach Bruce Read will not return for the 2009 season.
The Cowboys struggled in coverage most of this season, and they never really established much returning punts or kickoffs, either. Coverage also was a sore spot last season, and breakdowns in the two seasons he's served as special teams coach under Phillips have cost the Cowboys severely in several games.
Phillips was asked specifically about Read's status on Monday, and he basically said everyone on his coaching staff would be subject to an off-season evaluation process, although readily pointed out his two coordinators, Jason Garrett and Brian Stewart, would return.

one scrub gone....

Read definitely belongs up there with the Shula's, Reilly's and Zimmers as worst coaches we've ever had here

Nice. Good for Jerry and Wade. I didn't think they'd have it in them.

Cripes, how transparent can this be? Phillips is such a lame-duck head coach -- even if he weren't the laid back, mellow type, Jerry Jones doesn't exactly create the perception that this guy has any juice whatsoever when it comes to player and coaching decisions.

Quote: "Everyone on his coaching staff will be subject to an evaluation process."

Translation: "I'll get rid of whomever Jerry wants me to get rid of and I'll keep whomever Jerry wants me to keep."
