I don't follow why everyone is celebrating. As someone said earlier in the thread, this is like throwing a glass of water on a forest fire.
I posted yesterday that Nate Newton and Brady Tinker were talking about how when they were at training camp Bruce Read was begging players to give an effort, to just practice, but the players ignored him.
I don't think Read's a good coach, but no coach is going to improve STs with that attitude. When you watch how some of those guys avoided contact, there's not a lot Read could do. It starts at the top with Jerry Jones and Wade Phillips. All other moves - coaches or players - are pretty insignificant.

I do not want Coach A back either...his time has passed.
I hope we hire a young guy with lots of Special Teams experience and a fire in his belly.
Then I hope Wade gives a large amount of practice time and attention to special teams.
In the last decade or more, we have emphasized the backup positions and developmental players more than special teams players...then we said they have to play special teams to make the team, but the emphasis was still on their primary positions.
I think you need 3-4 guys who are on the team for special teams and only special teams...guys like Keith Davis before he started dreaming of being a player. Every team needs a couple of coverage guys who run down on punts and kickoffs and make plays as their only reason for having a job in the NFL, guys who dream of going to the pro bowl as the special teams rep.
Hurd was an excellent special teams gunner before being thought of as a receiver and then being injured. Watkins was supposed to be a special teams nightmare when drafted, but then he started being looked at as a real safety option. You need a couple of guys who know their jobs depend on it...then you add your longsnapper who will never see the field as a real player, along with a possible return specialist.

Read had to go but if he has to go then where does that leave Wade? I don't understand why these players couldn't put some effort into it. Is it a lack of leadership at the top? Is it a lack of players at the bottom of the roster? Is a lack of ability to understand talent in the NFL? Is it bottom guys who know they'll never play regularly so they just aren't going to perform? Our returners didn't stand a chance because they couldn't get enough blocks. Who is that on?
