What’s going on around the league?

Let’s check in around the NFL and see what’s going on while the Cowboys prepare for the Commanders on Sunday afternoon.

Jaguars strike trade with Bills for DT Marcel Dareus, former Top-5 pick

The Jags keep loading up an already ferocious defense that ranks sixth in yards allowed, second in pass defense, second in points allowed, but 31st in run defense. That’s likely why they were eager enough to make the deal. In exchange, the Jaguars will give the Bills a sixth-round pick that can turn into a fifth if Marcel Dareus pans out. That may seem cheap but the Bills have been trying to unload Dareus for a while now.

Dareus was the third overall pick in 2011 and he played very well his first three seasons having 23 sacks in that time including a ten sack season in 2014. Despite being suspended one game for violating the NFL’s substance policy, Buffalo signed him to a six-year deal worth $96.5 million in 2015. In 2016, he would be popped again, this time he would serve a four-game suspension.

After starting 78 games in his first five seasons, he’s started just ten in the last two. Dareus has 6.5 sacks over the last three seasons and a huge contract that only a team like Jacksonville could afford to pay. Just for good measure, Tyrone Crawford signed his deal just two days after Dareus in 2015 but has 12.5 sacks and 34 starts in that time. Crawford’s deal is also over $50 million less than Dareus’ with $25 million less in guarantees.

A retired Super Bowl winning receiver wants back in?

Anquan Boldin signed a one-year deal with the Bills in August but retired less than two weeks later saying his life purpose is much bigger than football. Just shy of halfway through the season, Boldin wants back in. The Buffalo Bills, who own his rights, have given Boldin permission to contact other teams and gauge their interest for a trade. The Bills are not interested in releasing his rights but is there a market for him?

In 15 seasons, Boldin has played in 202 games and has caught over 1,000 passes for 13,779 yards and 81 touchdowns. He’s played with four different teams, has been to two Super Bowls (won with Ravens), is a three-time Pro Bowler, and a Walter Payton Man of the Year recipient.

Boldin is the owner of five NFL records including: Most receptions in a rookie season (101), most receiving yards in first career game (217), fastest to record 300 receptions (47 games), 400 receptions (67 games), and 500 receptions (80 games). Boldin also owns three franchise records with the Cardinals and one with the Ravens.

Though it’s been two seasons since Boldin had over 1,000 yards receiving, he’s played rather well for a guy approaching 40. Last season, with the Lions, Boldin played 16 games and caught 67 passes for 584 yards. He also averaged 8.7 yards per catch and caught eight touchdowns. Surely, some team needs receiving help, over to you New York...

NFL will review controversial hit that put Joe Flacco in concussion protocol

It’s been talked about a lot since last night’s Ravens-Dolphins game but the league will review Kiko Alonso’s hit on Joe Flacco:

Flacco was immediately placed in the concussion protocol and didn’t return. Alonso received an unnecessary roughness penalty for the KO hit. The Dolphins’ linebacker maintains it was just a bang-bang play and the hit was unavoidable. At the time, the officials didn’t call for the ejection.

What’s clear is that Flacco definitely gave himself up and Kiko definitely led with his shoulder. Ravens coach John Harbaugh was livid but later said the officials called it correctly on the field in his postgame press conference. Little did Flacco know but Ryan Mallett would also be subject to some questionable tactics by none other than Ndamukong Suh.

Suh’s attempt to impersonate WWE Legend, The Undertaker, caused a scuffle to break out that ended with three flags all on the Dolphins. The Dolphins were shut out 40-0 in this contest, they had plenty to be angry about.
