The Cowboys and all other teams can start signing unrestricted free agents today without compromising possible compensatory picks coming their way in 2016.

For years, June 1 was an important date for NFL teams, because after June 1, unrestricted free agents signed by other teams didn't count against a team's compensatory draft-pick formula. Starting in 2015, that date has been moveed from June 1 to May 12, according to the league office.

The move was made to incentivize teams to sign veteran free agents shortly after the NFL draft instead of waiting until shortly before camp to sign veterans, as they had done in the past. Those veterans would then be able to participate in a team's OTAs and offseason program instead of sitting on their couch and waiting for a call in July.

For the Cowboys, the date is significant because they could now sign additional free agents that won't count against their compensatory draft picks in 2016.

In principle, compensatory draft picks are awarded to teams losing more or better compensatory free agents than they acquire. The number of comp picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four per team. Importantly, not every free agent lost or acquired automatically qualifies as a compensatory free agent.

Players who do not qualify as compensatory free agents: players who have been cut (e.g. CB Corey White, who was cut by the Saints and picked up by the Cowboys), restricted or exclusive rights free agents that were not tendered (CB Sterling Moore), players whose contract value is below about $1 million per year (e.g. 2016 acquisition LB Keith Rivers), and players signed after May 12 won’t impact the number of comp picks for their former or new team.

So maybe we'll see some news of going after Knowshon or Chris Johnson in the next few days. I'd be pretty happy with Knowshon if we aren't gonna make a trade for AD or another good RB.

I'd feel a lot better with a lineup of Knowshon/Randle/McFadden/Williams. One of those is likely to be pretty good.

As it stands right now, the Cowboys lost at least six compensatory free agents (DeMarco Murray, Jermey Parnell, Bruce Carter, Henry Melton, Justin Durant, George Selvie) and possibly a seventh (Anthony Spencer)

Anthony Spencer will not count as a compensatory free agent loss.

Spencer signed a one year contract that qualifies for the veteran minimum salary benefit.

It's a one-year, $950,000 deal that only counts $665,000 against the Saints' salary cap because it qualifies for the veteran minimum salary benefit, according to multiple reports. That makes it a no-risk pickup for the Saints, who are now a comfortable $4.4 million under the salary cap.

Spencer, 31, received an $80,000 signing bonus, and $150,000 of his $870,000 base salary is guaranteed. link

Players with a contract value of about $1M do not qualify.

Why can't Jerry beat that deal ?

Of course he could've.

Maybe the team didn't want to.

Maybe Anthony Spencer wasn't willing to play for so little for Dallas (ego).

Maybe he preferred returning to Rob Ryan's 3-4 defense.

Well how it spun out with the draft, getting two DE's on top of the other guys already on the roster, there wasn't really a spot for him.

Knowshon/Randle or Williams/McFadden or Dunbar 3 of those 5, except Knowhon will not be ready by season opener.

I'm also hoping they at least bring in one more runningback to compete. I'd be ok with that as well and less concerned about that position.

Surprised you guys want No Show Moreno. He's underachieved and has been injured his entire career.

Up until last years injuries he looked good, he looked good his lat year in denver. Not saying he is the answer but he is a more or less proven commodity better than bringing in the 3rd down guys or bench guys that have been in the league or longer and hoping for a Justin Forsett

Henry Melton doesn't count either since he had an option that wasn't picked up rather than his contract ending. There is also a 4 comp pick limit.

The new rules a few years ago that allows team to designate a June 1st (May 12th) cut ahead of time has made the actual June 1st cuts minimal.

Henry Melton will count as a compensatory free agent loss.

Melton was not waived, his contract voided when Dallas elected not to pick up the three year option this off-season, and he became an unrestricted free agent when the market opened.

Players with a contract value of about $1M do not qualify.

If Spencer does not qualify, it won't be because his contract is not for enough money. The threshold for qualifying is well below $1 million. This year, for example, Ed Dickson qualified even though his contract was an MSB deal with a $730,000 base salary and $65,000 signing bonus.

Spencer will qualify for the equation if he lasts long enough with the Saints and gets enough playing time (or suffers a major injury).
