The first round is in the books, now we shift focus to the second day of the NFL Draft
Before we dive into a mini-board for the Dallas Cowboys heading into rounds two and three, let’s iron out the dress shirt. The Cowboys did as many of us asked in the first round and they went after an edge rusher that they believe will ready to roll in Taco Charlton. Now, despite what people may think about who could have fit better, understand that edge rushers are like quarterbacks, they always have a premium tag placed on their heads. Stephen Jones even said so last night that at 28, it was as good a spot as any to take an edge rusher because they know all too well what happens when you don’t. Just last year, Emmanuel Ogbah and Kevin Dodd were gobbled up before the Cowboys picked at 34th overall. If the Cowboys waited until pick 60, there wasn’t going to be much meat on the bone in the pass rush department.
Speaking of Taco Charlton, he was the fourth-best edge rusher by CBS (17th overall player), 5th by DraftTek (25th overall), WalterFootball rated him the second-best defensive end (8th overall), and ESPN had him as the sixth-best defensive end, 22nd overall. The Cowboys see Charlton’s potential and ability, and to get him where they did is seen as a blessing by the organiation. If you were watching the war room cam, everyone in that room was celebrating, including SPARQ-warriors Will McClay and Jason Garrett. Now, we have put to bed the first round and it’s time to focus on the second day which as of now includes two picks for the Cowboys; the 60th and 92nd picks overall. Let’s just say there are a lot of so-called “first-round locks” that fell into the second round.
Could be DB Friday 14 CBs and 11 Safeties with grades in first 3 rounds.

Top Considerations Second Round:
Kevin King, CB: He’s likely off the board to the Seahawks to start the day but he’s certainly the best cornerback available. He’s got size and speed built in the mold that teams like the Seahawks and Cowboys really like. When Stephen Jones mentioned a potential first-rounder still on the board, there is no doubt it’s King. He offers so much for a team in need of defensive backs.
Chidobe Awuzie, CB: This defense could use someone like Awuzie with his supreme athleticism and abilities to make plays on the ball. Colorado is one of the premier schools for defensive backs this draft season and Awuzie is the best of the bunch.
Marcus Williams, S: If the Cowboys want a true free safety roaming the backfield that can make game changing plays, it’s Williams. Dallas can then afford to move Byron Jones around as they see fit. It’s more about how good Williams is at playing single-high than a detriment to Jones. Byron gives you so much in the ways of versatility and Williams can cover that back end as the last line of defense.
Fabian Moreau, CB: Moreau is a first-round talent who slipped due to a pectoral injury during his Pro Day. This injury is not going to keep him out of training camp and the Cowboys really liked him in the pre-draft process. Frankly, he’s a top cornerback prospect and one that could have been called on Day 1, if not for this injury.
Top Considerations Third Round:
Marcus Maye, S: Here is another rangy playmaking safety from a stacked secondary out of Florida. The Gators have churned out the defensive backs and Maye should be considered among the best free safeties in the class. He’s very well-rounded being able to cover ground and help in run support.
Teez Tabor, CB: The talent level is there but the athleticism is lacking. He may have some off-the-field concerns and didn’t interview well. He’s probably best playing in a zone defense but every time the ball comes his way, he’s a threat to pick it off.
Justin Evans, SS: Another very rangy player with excellent ball skills and great speed. He’s got position flexibility and can even help out as a return man. The Cowboys love him but he’s either going to lay the wood or miss entirely, much like J.J. Wilcox did.
Ju-Ju Smith-Schuster, WR: Don’t really see the Cowboys going receiver early but this would be excellent value as Shuster can really move the chains in bulk. He’s a dangerous outside receiver that may not have elite speed but has sticky hands and will posterize defensive backs.
There is a very common theme in day two; go get the defensive backs. This is my little board to work off of today but we certainly want to see all of yours, too.
