They have too many investments to just play 1 guy there.

Taco, Gregory, Armstrong, tapper, and whatever the name is of the Scrub that had a good superbowl.

Certainly too many investment for that "1 guy there" to be the miscast Crawford. Great team guy, gives his all, team leader, versatile, all of that. But he's got no business playing right defensive end and by appearances it was out of necessity last year due to Mayowa's repeated failures in run defense and Taco's early struggles as a rookie. Now that those conditions have changed, and there are more and better options, I very much hope that Crawford is out of the picture at RDE.

Jourdan Lewis isn’t getting pushed to start but this guy thinks the same coaching staff will start Gregory?!?

I’d bet good money that he won’t see 50% of the snaps unless there is an injury.

I don't remember evidence of him being "a liability against the run". And "2 years" is a common mistake people make for his time away. That's an oversimplification and not accurate. And the word is he has in fact honed his skills and technique working with former pro Greg Townsend.

Crawford needs to be out of the right defensive end conversation. If he's lining up there, your pass rush has one hand tied behind their backs.

There are enough better options that you should no longer be forced to line up Crawford in a position he's totally miscast for.

where did you see evidence that he was good against the run? I don't remember him as a strong run defender. and its been two years. he has been in the league three years now and has had injuries, suspensions, and has only played a handful of games....how has he honed his skills if he has been suspended and not with coaches or the team? practicing hard in a gym!!!

show me. show it to me on the field then I will believe, until then 3 years, 13 games....and last year zero games. the year before 2 games.... not enough.

I don't disagree with Crawford not being a RDE. it was my opinion that he will start there because he can defend the run and the coaches trust him. it doesn't mean I think he is the right player for there. I think if Charlton shows in preseason that he can be a reliable run defender and better pass rusher, then he gets the nod easily. remember 1st and 2nd down is usually a run defense down (although its 50/50 these days).

I think Crawford and Collins will be rotating at 3-tech and that would be a good combination to keep them fresh and attacking the middle of the line.

He looks really thin. I doubt he's a full time starter anytime soon.
He didn’t look thin in the clip Speedkillz posted. He was filling out that sweater with broad shoulders and his biceps shown through.

Where are the “thin pics” at?

I can't blame anyone for having their doubts. He's let us down enough times before. But I'm hopeful that we'll see more open mindedness and less revenge-type, angry thinking about him.
its all about his play on the field. I will believe when I see him do it on the field, until then all doubts and speculations are on par with a player that in three years has only played 13 games and last two years only 2 games

Looks can be deceiving.
Thing is, he looks big. Don’t buy the narrative by these Zoners who want to just post to post, Jazz. You know how it is here.

I just saw a vid of him looking pretty svelt. And it is pretty recent.

Where is this “220” Gregory that looks “thin” (not directed at you, Jazz, my brother)

I think 3-4 OLB is his best spot. First down is probably the only down I don’t want him on the field as a RDE. I won’t front I’ve hated on him since the combine for failing the test pre draft but his potential is hard not to be excited about
We don’t play 3-4. Haven’t since Ryan. He’s a bend RDE in the mold of Miller

BTB always goes right into the deep end.

All I need from Gregory at this point is a guy who comes off the bench and is able to generate consistent pressure. I don't need him to start at RDE.
I need him starting at RDE. I think he is doing so by week 8.

BtB fluff or not

I'm glad Gregory made his way back, but he still needs to work his way up the depth chart.

For example, make him wait a few weeks before letting him go up against Tyron.

Then when he finally does, have Tyron mess with him and say something like "what is this!...and what do you think your doing?" looks around for the coaches and says, "is this guy supposed to be lining up here?"

You get the picture...:D

Gregory is that caliber of talent. I'm pretty sure he was a starter in every game he has played.

If he stays off the weed and is healthy, he is the primary RDE.
This. Good stuff, brother :star:

This article sums up many of the reasons why I'm excited to see Randy Gregory back in the fold. It details many of the special qualities and attributes that he brings that other players simply can't. And it a big reason why this team took the risk of drafting him in the first place. A risk we can all hope finally pays off:

In the blink of an eye, the Cowboys just may have one of the fiercest edge rush presences in the NFL in 2018. At the very least, this is one of the best ensembles of raw pass rushing talents that the Cowboys have had in years. The highlight of the 2017 season was the emergence of DeMarcus Lawrence, who was finally healthy. Lawrence became the first Cowboys defensive lineman since Jason Hatcher in 2011 to record double-digit sacks with 14.5.

Behind Lawrence, the Cowboys have Tyrone Crawford, last-year’s first-rounder Taco Charlton, Kony Ealy, Charles Tapper, and this year’s fourth-rounder Dorance Armstrong. Yet, it wasn’t until a few days ago that we found out former 2015 second-round pick Randy Gregory would be rejoining the team after being reinstated by the commissioner. Though Gregory has been on an 18-month layoff, his return can not be overstated. This is huge news for the Dallas Cowboys.

I would put the anointing oil away as the ole Bill said.

one, he would be a liability against the run and he showed that in the few games he played, teams will just rough shot over him. and he has been away for 2 years, so all the measurable mean nothing unless he has honed his skills and technique. my opinion at best he is the back up to Charlton with Crawford moving back inside. I think Crawford starts the season, but if Charlton shows he is ready, he may get the nod over Crawford.
His “liability” against the run has been disproven by methodical all-22 and intensive college coverage/video.

It’s a catch phrase here in Cowboyland. He is very adept at stifling run, in the admittedly small amount of gameplay we have from him.

No one is calling him Tank-level talent at the run, but he isn’t shabby. He’s aggressive and penetrates, and has IQ to find the runner

where did you see evidence that he was good against the run? I don't remember him as a strong run defender.

I'm not the guy making claims about his run defense, you are. Do you have evidence to support it or is it an unsupported claim?

and its been two years. he has been in the league three years now and has had injuries, suspensions, and has only played a handful of games....

He last played in a game on January 1, 2017. Today is July 23, 2018. Add it up and it is not "two years".

how has he honed his skills if he has been suspended and not with coaches or the team? practicing hard in a gym!!!

And working with former pro Greg Townsend as I previously mentioned. He knows a thing or two about pass rushing. Townsend is a multi-time Pro Bowler with 109 career sacks. I'd say that makes him qualified.

show me. show it to me on the field then I will believe, until then 3 years, 13 games....and last year zero games. the year before 2 games.... not enough.

I don't blame you for having doubts. He's let us down before so the past history invites skepticism.

I don't disagree with Crawford not being a RDE. it was my opinion that he will start there because he can defend the run and the coaches trust him. it doesn't mean I think he is the right player for there. Agreed on all counts.

You have no idea if he is. The Cowboys just invested a #1 pick in a guy that might play RDE in Charlton as well.

In fact, I'd be stunned if he's a starting DE for us in 2018.
Yet you have an idea if he is?

I am so high on Taco, but he wishes he fit the prototype RDE as well as Gregory. If we’re lucky, we have a mini-Hardy in Taco and Von in RG on the right.

Why do some get to predict and be correct, while the other “have no idea”?

We’ve seen very little of Gregory, and what we have seen is very encouraging.
