BTB: Prediction: It won’t take long for Randy Gregory to win Cowboys starting right DE spot

I think its premature to plug him into a starting spot, just like its premature to say he won't be on the 53 (he will). Let him chase the QB from pass rush sets for at least the first half of the season and everything will sort itself out.

Asking the same. Where is this new bs coming from?

The original reports came from one unverified photo. Gregory showed a lot of bend and a positive outlook on life, but seemed light on body mass:

Exactly right. I think the writer misspoke when he mentioned "starter", but I think Gregory can give this team the most dangerous threat at RDE in passing situations, and that's what truly matters to me.

This article sums up many of the reasons why I'm excited to see Randy Gregory back in the fold. It details many of the special qualities and attributes that he brings that other players simply can't. And it a big reason why this team took the risk of drafting him in the first place. A risk we can all hope finally pays off:

In the blink of an eye, the Cowboys just may have one of the fiercest edge rush presences in the NFL in 2018. At the very least, this is one of the best ensembles of raw pass rushing talents that the Cowboys have had in years. The highlight of the 2017 season was the emergence of DeMarcus Lawrence, who was finally healthy. Lawrence became the first Cowboys defensive lineman since Jason Hatcher in 2011 to record double-digit sacks with 14.5.

Behind Lawrence, the Cowboys have Tyrone Crawford, last-year’s first-rounder Taco Charlton, Kony Ealy, Charles Tapper, and this year’s fourth-rounder Dorance Armstrong. Yet, it wasn’t until a few days ago that we found out former 2015 second-round pick Randy Gregory would be rejoining the team after being reinstated by the commissioner. Though Gregory has been on an 18-month layoff, his return can not be overstated. This is huge news for the Dallas Cowboys.

Try tapping the brakes a little here on Gregory. He has a grand sum total of ONE sack in the NFL and hasn't played in over a year and a half. It's not like he was some kind of sack machine when he played and I highly doubt he has the same first quick step he had as a rookie. He's going to have to fight just to make the 53 man roster let alone declaring him today a starter.

I'm encouraged by the fact that his "ONE sack" happened to come in the last game that he played. When he was finally over the ankle injury that hampered him for his entire rookie season. You remember, the one nobody wants to acknowledge or talk about?

And his best performance was his last one. And it happened to come against one of - if not the best - left tackles in the game in Jason Peters.

Why would you think he's lost his quick step?

He's going to have to fight just to make the 53 man roster let alone declaring him today a starter.
.

I think that this claim is totally false. This team hasn't stuck by this player through all of his trials and tribulations to simply cut him now.

Worry about Charles Tapper, not Randy Gregory.

My expectations for RG are nothing right now. I’m just hoping he can make it back to his prime, make the team, stay clean, and add something to the rotation. Anything more than that is gravy. Guy has been out of football for over a year.

I hope you're right that he is the kind of player that can take over the position. My impression from the little he has played for us is the quickness is there to be a speed rusher, but he may not have the strength to fight through if a blocker is able to engage him, and he may not be able to hold the point of attack on running plays. In other words, maybe a bit one dimensional, and therefore a situational pass rusher rather than a starter.

I hope I'm wrong and he can be a fully functional starter. Of course, who knows how almost 2 years off has affected him? Has he lost a step? Maybe retained his speed and added a little strength? It will be interesting to see.

Why in the world would we want Gregory "starting" at RDE? He should be a sub-package player both because of his size and because of his time off.

Several players are going to split the defensive end snaps anyway, so let someone else "start" on downs where teams are more likely to run the ball and let Gregory get after the passer when running is less of an option.

In looking at more footage of Gregory's last performance, I looked at these highlights from that January 2017 game:

It is both head scratching and encouraging to see how much weakness that this team has rid itself of. Guys who simply sucked and couldn't play. Names like:

  • Mark Sanchez - who punched his ticket out of town in this one game
  • Gavin Escobar - a waste of space since day one
  • Darren McFadden - remind me again why he was here last year?
  • Justin Durant - running on fumes with one foot out the door
  • Doug Free - just abysmal by this point
  • Benson Mayowa - a huge liability vs the run
And it also shows just why Kris Richard was brought in to coach this secondary. And why Byron Jones is no longer a safety.

One it doesn't explain is how anyone ever thought that it would be a good idea to sign Nolan Carroll. After the Cowboys themselves picked on him all game.

Seeing the performances in this game, I can't help but to be encouraged by the fact that at all least these will no longer be an issue.

Thing is, he looks big. Don’t buy the narrative by these Zoners who want to just post to post, Jazz. You know how it is here.

I just saw a vid of him looking pretty svelt. And it is pretty recent.

Where is this “220” Gregory that looks “thin” (not directed at you, Jazz, my brother)

Jane Slater just said on NFLN inside TC, that Gregory is about 250.
