So excited! Dak then Rush then?

Stephen Jones on who should be the Cowboys backup QB, “let’s see how it plays out”

The backup quarterback position is a long ways from being settled.

The most wonderful revelation of last season was the remarkable discovering of the Cowboys new franchise quarterback Dak Prescott. He started the season behind Tony Romo and Kellen Moore on the depth chart and shared a bunk bed with Jameill Showers. The kid from Mississippi State wasn’t someone people gave a lot of thought about until the other two quarterbacks got hurt and then suddenly all eyes were on him.

And you pretty much know how that turned out. Well, here we are a year later and once again someone is trying to climb the QB depth chart.

One of the biggest side stories of this Cowboys preseason has been the backup quarterback position. It didn’t start out that way, but the team’s solid number #2 QB, Kellen Moore has struggled in two out of three preseason games whereas undrafted free agent, Cooper Rush has flourished. It’s been almost a night and day difference for the offense when the two quarterbacks are in.

Cooper Rush leads the offense to touchdowns. Kellen Moore leads the offense to punts. Sometimes he’ll allow the defense to poke the ball out of his hands and meander for a defensive touchdown. It’s comical at times, but also very frightening.

With this most recent display of contrasting performances against the Indianapolis Colts, fans are crying out, “why can’t Cooper be the backup!” Well, guess what?

No, but if Cooper were to play that well we could get a first round pick out of him.
I know some people call it jumping the gun but I feel as though I have seen enough of operation Rush. He is the unequivocal #2. Kellen needs to go ahead & start packing his ramen noodle bags.

For the record, I felt the same way about Bease the first time I saw him.

Fast forward four years.

Could we have a QB controversy between Dak and Cooper?

Doh!
That's a good problem to have. Is Rush our version of Captain Kirk Cousins? Doubt it, but not outta the question. Again, a good problem to have even though my money is on Dak to have a long and storied career here in Dallas/Arlington.

Question...

Is Cooper Rush ready to look at a defense, recognize the scheme and blitz, audible out of a bad play call, re-adjust receiver routes, and execute the play in less than 10 seconds at the line of scrimmage?

There's a lot more to playing quarterback in the NFL than just throwing pretty passes in an organized scrimmage against scrubs.

Probably not.

That would typically take NFL experience.

Not many here are claiming Rush is the next big thing. I believe most of his hype is based on how bad Moore has looked...and how Moore has done nothing in his career to warrant a backup spot on a team with serious playoff aspirations.

This is my view on it.

If we had a dominant defense, I would want Moore as the backup.

But we have a terrible defense, so I'd rather have Rush's arm as the backup.

Well Dak didn't do all that last year til towards the end of the season. It was shocking for me to see him doing all that, I even said in chat, 'why is Dak talking so much all of a sudden?'

They would treat Rush just like they treated Dak.

Perhaps.

My point is, if it was just about a big arm and pretty spirals, then Alex Tanney or Dustin Vaughn would be here still, and Jay Cutler would be headed to the Hall of Fame. That's not what QB-ing in the NFL is about.

Well I don't get the feeling Dak will miss many games (knock on wood) just cause of the way he is built.

Alot of times he appears to not even pay attention to when he is hit, like it bounces off him. We can argue all day about the backup, but hopefully we won't see him.

He has more presence than those guys. Maybe its because we just got finished seeing Moore suck it up, who knows.

We are talking about a backup QB here who might never play even if he is #2 so if he had a career like Jay Cutler, I'm sure he would be happy about it.
