Bunting - Cowboys LOVE T. Smith

big difference in a NFL OT that played almost a complete season at RT and has been groomed and coached for years by your OL coaches stepping in a LT and a 20 year rookie RT who has never played LT stepping right in.

Exactly!

Plus Free had a better body of work coming out of college to evaluate anyways.

Huh? I don't even want to draft Smith.

I'm like his biggest anti-supporter on this board.

Free is our LT and that's exactly where he should stay. I totally agree with that and was actually making that point.

What part of my post said otherwise bro?

I know I was adding to your point

Also Free played LT in college. Just saying.

Apples and oranges man.

Free was not the 9th overall pick in the draft.

We also had him playing here for a few years before we had him starting at LT.

Even when Free was playing RT the team felt he would fit better at LT because of his feet.

Free is our LT and we should keep it that way. We need a RT and there is not a LT or RT worthy of the 9th pick in the draft.

So what would be preventing Dallas from playing Smith at RT? Why is that problematic? Unless, you want another year of Colombo.

Or, if you're going to just plug in Sam Young at RT and assume he can play based off of nothing.

So true. Look at last years draft for OTs. If SMith was in last years draft where would he go. He would have been the 4th OT taken, some where mid 1st round and thats wher ei rank him now. If we trade back mid 1st and he is the top guy on the board then by all means take Smith.

nothing but people were syaing he is a LT so why draft a LT when you have a good one. WHy draft Smith to play RT at 9 when you can get a RT in a trade back. I'm fine with drafting Smith just not at 9. He hasn;t proven anything as a LT and RTs are not and never has been drafted top 10.

I think Wes Bunting said that Smith would have been rated the 2nd or 3rd tackle in last year's draft class.

No, no, no. Please! Anything but Columbo.

No, please!!!!

Haha! Nothing is stopping me from playing Tyron Smith at RT instead of Columbo.

Except of course that he's not ready and I rather use a late first round, early 2nd round pick on Carimi or Sherrod who could easily step in and start at RT.

Would not even use a top 15 pick on Tyron Smith.

Everybody had the same doubts about Free, he didnt look like the big overly strong tackle that everybody thinks the cowboys need. How many ate crow this yr?

Tyron Smith is a smart choice IMO

Lol, says who?

What does last year's draft have anything to do with this one?

Absolutely nothing.

Yes, players relevant stock will go up or down based on the quality of depth of that position in that particular draft. That's just the way it goes.

A player you might have taken at #15 last season, you might have to take at #10 this year.

The year the Colts took Dwight Freeney at #11, they lambasted for "reaching" for a player most concluded would be available in the 20s. The GM (Irsay?) responded to the criticism after selecting him by saying something to the effect of "that's the player we liked and so we took him at #11." The Colts didn't want to run the risk of losing out on the targeted player because of trying to get cute and moving back a few spots.

Had Smith gone to Northern Illinois he would have played left tackle as well, and defensive end..and special teams.

ok so he still would have beena mid 1st round pick and thats where I put him in this draft.

sure but he couldn't play LT at USC. Not like Kalil is a god of a LT. If Smith was a LT he would have started there and Kalil would have played RT.

Free and Smith. Sign me up.

Peterson is only one I would like better at 9 (small trade up). We could potentially trade down and land Smith too.

Looking at last years draft helps you rank players. Why should I draft and give just as much money in the top 10 as OKung got. OKung was atleast a LT in college and proved himself more tha Smith has.

If we trade back and miss out on SMith I don't hink we miss much if we can still get Carimi, Castanzo, or Sherrod. We need a starting good RT and all IMO can do that. Smith isn't special. Non of them are. None are worth a top 10 pick.

wrong..bunting said he had Smith rated above Trent Williams

As a freshman, Smith was the #2 LT behind Charles Brown. Kalil redshirted.

As a sophomore, Smith won the starting RT job because Brown was still there and the staff wanted Smith on the field. Kalil, much bigger now, was the #2 at both positions.

This year, it was assumed Kalil would play RT and Smith would be moved to LT, but Kalil had a great spring (Smith was academically ineligible) and the staff decided to keep Smith where he was.

Some are already projecting Kalil as a Top 10 pick next year.
