Burnett signs with San Diego...2 yr 5.5mil

You know he was a FA. He gets to decide his fate now. Maybe he didn't want to keep playing for the cowboys.

He was from Cal and always wanted to get back there. Was a big 49ers fan growing up and hated the Cowboys. He said so before we drafted him. He said he'd rather play for anyone but the Cowboys.

I think it's because Burnett was one of ours. He was a draft pick and looking at the contract numbers, wouldn't have been expensive to keep. Not sure I agree about your thoughts on his attitude. Seemed ok to me.

It's also preferring to hold onto the known versus the unknown.

However, if the team drafts another linebacker, which I expect them to do, then we'll be back to the shiny new toy syndrome. The new guy will be a stud player right out the box.

What this tells me is that the 'boys don't have to keep every suspect player on the roster anymore. Being good enough to play, but with no more upside, used to guarantee a roster. Not anymore.

Yet Bobby ****ing Carpenter is still here.

He's also cheap player at the bottom of the roster. Meaning, barring some miraculous turnaround, this will probably be his last year...if he even makes the final roster.

He should of been cut and they tendered Proctor...I don't see them getting rid of suspect players.

Exactly...Didnt Zack do the samething last year when he signed with us? I think it was going to cost us more to keep him, imo. And i believe he gave the chargers a discount, cause like you said, thats where he is from.

The linebacker depth is already weak. No need to weaken it anymore than you have to.

As for Proctor, he's depth too and played about how you would expect a 3rd string backup to play. Tho it seems from Wade and other players, they thought Proctor played ok last year. Go figure.

Anyway, Kosier and Holland are both coming off season-ending injuries, so again, why not keep him. A tender doesn't guarantee a final roster spot.

IDK if they were getting rid of the crap then those bums would be gone. Also getting rid of Carp would make the LB corps stronger addition by subtraction!

It's the offseason. None of these guys are guaranteed a roster spot.

The LB corps would not get stronger by getting rid of Carp, simply because he doesn't even play in the regular defense. He has no impact there. His impact on special teams. More than likely he has to get on the field in the regular D. If he doesn't, he's probably gone. They can find cheaper special team guys.

He has no impact on ST either. Rogers > Carp on ST....

Those numbers shocked me. I was expected a lot more.

Can't believe we weren't a player at all in this, looks like we're gonna grab a pair during the draft.

Jasper Brinkley, come on down.

See what happens when you draft LB's so early????? They're just like WR's. It's a crap shoot!

Plus during preseason when he started he sucked...he got ran over by 2's and 3's.

LB's are just a tough spot to fill...it's a guess. Burnett was a stud at Tenn. Bradie took 3 yrs to figure it out...and Carp still sucks!

I suspect that Dallas got outbid on the guarantees and the location. Given that Burnett is always banged up, I can't imagine they offered a guaranteed base salary for two years. More likely that Dallas offered a one year type deal that would allow him a shot at a starting job (or a two/three year deal that spelled out roughly the same thing). Similar to what they did with our two Safeties. Probably a case of where Burnett went for the guaranteed cash and location more than the package that Dallas was offering.

Didn't take long to bag on him. But yes we do still have him. So now maybe the coaching staff will stop screwing with his position and give him a chance.

Even though I wish we could have kept Burnett. Well, I will bag on him. He had 4 years to prove himself and had many chances to break into the starting line up. Yes, he had injuries, and quite a few, so he may be considered injury prone. So why don't people bag on Burnett?

[\venting off]
Burnett did break into the line-up, and injury-prone doesn't mean the guy can't produce when he's healthy. Carpenter, on the other hand, has been healthy. Maybe Carpenter just sucks, considering Wade has watched him for 2 years now and has a wealth of experience in defense.

Seriously, that's all it took to keep him? Why on earth wouldn't we just offer him that?
Maybe Jerry is hurting financially...

Per mickey on talkin cowboys...he said that we did match the offer for burnett but burnett wanted to play close to home.

I absolutely don't get the love for Burnett. He's a JAG as a player and has a questionable attitude IMO.

Are you guys sure this isn't a case of overvaluing something just because you don't have it anymore?

This.

I'm happy for Burnett, although I never understood why Parcells drafted him

esp. the comments he made after that he had trouble keeping on 227lbs.

I disagree. There are plenty of guys that are underrated on this team that people seem to want to give away. (Spears)

Burnett was young, athletic, improving, filled a need and would of came cheap.

Improving to what? The guy defended 2 passes despite playing on each and every passing down in the nickel. Supposedly he is a playmaker yet he only had two sacks all year. No picks no TFL one FF.

Supposedly he is a good cover man yet John Carlson Chris Cooley and a whole bevy of RB/TE roached him.
