Burnt Carr

I think he is playing fine personally. I think the issue is a bunch of folks here on CZ got all worked up in the offseason thinking Carr is a "shutdown" corner -- whatever that is ..

He is a good corner. Probably not Pro-Bowl material. The Cowboys had to overpay to get him so he got Pro-Bowl money.

What else is there to say really?
Yep, especially to the bolded. He's not playing bad, he's just not a world beater. Anybody who thought he was going to come in and be an All-Pro was drinking a little too much Kool Aid.

Because he's a physical corner, he's going to get some penalties, that's just the nature of the position and the way things are called today. On the one in the end zone, you're asking a corner to do A LOT to cover Steve Smith on that play. Whether he's old or not, he's still very elusive. It's essentially a double move, and in the end zone, you have to jump the first one and hope the QB doesn't have all day. If Carr doesn't grab the jersey, it's an easy touchdown.

I like Carr. There was a play where he jammed his receiver so hard, he fell. It was awesome. :D

He needs to "get real" because he pointed out a simple, and very relevant fact?

Geez...

This exchanged can be rewritten as....

"The defense played well as a whole!"

"That doesn't mean Carr played well."

"The defense playing well as a whole is a simple, and very relevant fact when evaluating Carr."

Yeah, thats pretty idiotic.

I like Brandon Carr.

Is he overpaid for the type of player he is? Yes IMO. The market value at that position is just unreal though.

I also expect him to get beat from time to time. The rules of today just don't allow for anyone to be a true shutdown guy.

Overall he is not a worry IMO.

I keep hearing people complain about Carr.

But I just don't see why.

He gives up completions, sure. But the guy isn't Revis or Deion. Nobody expected him to (at least, they shouldn't have). People are going to get some yards.

He's a good player and a tough player.

Around December, people will be glad we have him

Biggest problem for Car is the scheme. The last few weeks we have been playing our corners off the line of scrimmage. Car's strength is press coverage at the line. He does not have the speed to make up when playing off. He likes to be physical and jam the receiver off of the line. That gives him the advantage. The scheme has been based off of the qb we face. Today if we play man at the line and Cam decides to run, he would of been picking up huge chunks if he was not contained.

Excellent post. Please, post more.

Are you people blind?

What did Carr surrender, 50 yards?

This thread has no merit.

I think the team lost a lot of confidence in the safety play when Church went down.

Dallas had held it's first 3 opponents to passing totals of:

  • New York: 187 Passing Yards
  • Seattle: 133 Passing Yards
  • Tampa: 91 Passing Yards

Church goes out against the Bucs in the 3rd quarter and the last three games have been.

  • Chicago: 267 Passing Yards
  • Baltimore: 230 Passing Yards
  • Carolina: 216 Passing Yards

Some might say that the QBs they faced early where as a group worse than the QBs they faced lately but Eli and the Giants air it out with the best of them and holding them to under 200 yards is good.

Josh Freeman has quietly put up some numbers over the last month or so.

The week before he played Dallas he threw for 230.

The week after he threw for 290.

Last week he threw for 320.

This week he threw for 420.

I think the loss of Church is proving to be bigger than expected. It seems like the defense is less agressive at the LOS and are getting beat on the short-intermediate routes quite a bit just as they did last year when the safety play sucked and the CB play sucked.

I don't think Carr has played as bad as people make it out to be. He's struggled as of late of course, but compare that to Scandrick and Newman of last season. Or any recent memory. Our secondary has been in shambles for years now. Carr may not be worth 50M. But he's definitely an improvement.

Brandon Carr played very well early on in the season and looked like he was absolutely deserving of the 50 million dollar contract that the Cowboys gave him. However recently that hasn't been the case. He's been getting torched alot lately.

Part of the problem is lack of consistent pressure on the quarterback, but today we were able to get pressure yet Carr was still getting torched. He needs to step up and start playing like he did in the first couple of games. Maybe it's the defensive scheme, but bottom line is he isn't playing very good football right now.

Pass rush=Clairborne's pick...It's amazing what a pass rush can do.. Its so important, esp the way the league is now..

I agree Carr is not playing well, he needs to play better..

JJ has to overpay people because guys dont wanna come here and be on a .500 team. Get used to it.

Carr was fantastic with the replacement refs. They were letting things go that these refs are calling. He has to make the adjustment to the regular refs. If he doesn't we will have too much money tied up in a good but not spectacular cb.

Carr is a very good press man cover corner who now with no safety help has to play off. Look at how great he was when Church was there. Ryan is having to play Carr off because they don't trust mccray.

McCray is pretty bad..

Church wasn't the reason why Carr was playing well, it was because the replacement refs were letting him and every other corner in the league grab and hold the receivers.

Why should we compare our 50 mil corner to one who was 3rd on the depth chart last year and this season as well?

Good post Hoofbite.

Not worried about Carr. He's a good corner. Our best in run support as well. Dallas' scheme isn't allowing him to play to his strengths IMO.
