Cowboys signed the #1 CB in free agency 2 years ago for $10m. That's worked out wonderfully. Why not do it again and sign the most expensive safety in the entire NFL.

Of course it is worth it because this team is built to win now, right?

I'm sorry.. I am feeling sarcastic today....

Even Byrd wouldn't be able to cover people forever with our pass rush.

Marcel Dareus and Mario Williams probably have helped make his job a lot easier than it could've been.

We need to fix our pass rush first, because this is a prime year to do so with free agents like Melton available. After that we can look to the safety situation if our current guys don't develop.

This defense is two years away, minimum, from being competitive. We're going to have ugly days in 2014 on D too.

if he was a couple of years younger yes. But by the time we fixed the rest of the D he would be on the downslope

I agree that the best route would be a blue chip S in the draft for the cap (If Donald/Ealey are gone). But on the other hand the team could foreseeably dump Carr next season (with the Cap exploding the next two years a lot of the dead money won't be as burdensome) making Byrd/Ward the only top salary in the secondary. Scan is a good contract and Mo would have to be lights out to get a max deal down the road. DL FA should be priority but don't see anyone out there outside of Melton/Houston/Joseph/McDonald who also won't be cheap. Hardy getting franchised sucked but was also expected. Bennett also wants to get paid and doesn't fit if Ware takes the paycut.

We can do whatever we want in free agency.

Good, because he thinks he should be amongst the highest paid DB's in the league, and has a real stick in the mud for an agent. Good luck with that...

Honestly, it would not surprise me to see him not live up to what ever contract he signs.

if the defense is two years from being competitive what will they do at qb then in two years when the defense is fixed then we wont have a qb so will be just as bad as now not going to gain much

They were going to make him the highest paid safety for first two years of his contract. Clearly he wants out of Buffalo, but we still can't afford him.

I disagree, getting some Dlineman that can push the pocket and create pressure will improve our defense overall.

I understand your thinking but people here don't acknowledge that early in the season when we were in the top 10 in the league in sacks, we were still giving up 330 ypg passing. We need to upgrade back there just as bad. One doesn't work without the other.

I agree. Our Dline needs more help than our secondary. We got to a point where teams were running at will against us. I'll give secondary a pass due to a lack of a pass rush and a scheme that didn't fit our CB's attributes.

We've had DL up until lately. We haven't had agree at Safety in almost 20 years...

Its not like the Bills are going to win a Super Bowl with him on the franchise tag in 2014. So take the comp pick and move on.

But to franchise him again puts them back where they started, the $ is very big and they still don't have his rights longterm. renting again

The Bills offer to Byrd woulve made him 1 of highest paid safeties in the NFL in 1st 2 yrs of deal. They'll continue to work on a new deal

While there had been reports the Bills would tag Jairus Byrd, from what I gather that is very unlikely. He rejected their latest offer...

Byrd is only 27 years old and is considered the best free safety in the game, known for his coverage skills. To say this is a hole in the Cowboys roster is an understatement. Numerous attempts since Woodson have failed for the last decade. Let's get him!

I can't see Dallas investing the money it takes to get Byrd when it so badly needs to fix the front seven. Ideally, I'd love to have the best players we can possible get at every position, but if it comes down to a pass-rushing defensive lineman vs. acquiring Byrd, we've got to go with the lineman and hope that someone like Wilcox/Johnson/Heath, a cheap FA or a midround pick can handle the safety role. A better pass rush also will make whomever we have back there look better.
