The moves we make in FA will be bargain type acquisitions. The whole point of reducing Ware's salary is to keep Dez and Tyron. Not to sign a safety. Do you really want to lose Dez and/or Tyron over a safety? I'd much rather keep our stars and fix the DL.

The question assumes there has to be a choice. I'm not convinced that is the case - at all.

Exactly. Dez and TSmith will get theirs later. There is more than enough room to sign a major FA or 2 and/or a few mid-level guys.

If we could afford it, I'd do it on a 4-5 year deal at 6-6.5m per. He'll want more though.

This team just doesn't have the kind of cap space to sign Byrd for what he wants. You can expect he's wanting a multi-year deal in the $10+ million/year neighborhood. Between the big contracts we already have and the fact that Dez and Tyron will be getting sizable increases on the horizon, just don't see a way to sign a big money FA like Byrd.

I think some of you are just downright delirious. Wake me when Byrd is signed and Dez and Tyron are extended. ... Riiiiiiiiiiiiight

If you do the research you'll see that it is easily possible to sign Byrd, Dez and Tyron. What is less easy to predict is if our front 4 would get the necessary additions, or front 7 for that matter. There is the matter of philosophy preference, of building a defense from the inside out. And then there is the matter of simply seeing a great player at a position of need, and making the move because it's now or never. There is no such specimen in the draft.

I would rather sign Byrd and draft DT, DE. Free safety needs to be the QB and has a huge learning curve. I think Wlicox has the athleticism, but needs time for the nuances. This isn't a rebuilding team. They are trying to win now with Romo. Byrd helps the entire secondary.

And that my friend is the great debate around here. With some good additions and better luck on injuries, we'll be right there in the hunt. I disagree with the notion it has to take at least two years.

I know this. The minute we signed him we would be immediately, appreciably better.

All things being equal I would go DL but all things may not be equal as a DL talent like Byrd may not hit the open market.

No thanks. You have to develop your own talent. Free agent spending gets your in trouble with the cap.

I think it's safe to say that most teams require a near "best-case" scenario to win a Super Bowl. Too many injuries or bad draft picks or FA signings, it's not going to succeed like that.

In a best-case scenario for the Cowboys, Ware takes a big pay cut and has a healthy year for us, all-pro numbers, etc. Lee will go injury free as well, and play up to his high standards. Those are two big keys right there, and are achievable. Other players will also have to play up to their potential and improve, and not get hurt. A best-case scenario would be to add two quality DL to the D as well, if not more. This could be from the draft or free agency. Quality OL and WR depth would be added as well. TAdding Byrd to this group would then really give us a chance.

The funny thing is that we could have drafted Byrd in 2009, but we gave up our #1 for WR Roy Williams with an expiring contract.
