Byron Jones: Are we concerned yet?

Another awful first round draft pick in the last decade or so. Carpenter, Felix, (trading their first rounder away for a stupid bad Detroit WR), Claiborne and this year a RB at #4 overall. That's just horrendous.

At least they hit on the OL dudes and Dez.

For the second week in a row, Pro Football Focus graded Byron Jones as our second best defensive performer.

OLB Sean Lee, 84.3
FS Byron Jones, 81.4
C Orlando Scandrick, 76.4
DT Terrell McClain, 71.4
S Barry Church, 70.1

"The Cowboys’ secondary kept the defense in the game, as the Dallas pass-rush was basically non-existent. Safety Byron Jones had 46 snaps in coverage and was targeted five times, allowing three receptions for just 20 yards."

On the season, he's tied for 2nd (84.0) on the team with Sean Lee.

he did play well, its really hard to grade the Safeties when there is Zero pass rush.

70-79 is average
80-84.9 is above average.

Thanks for posting Coop

He played well and he's only going to get better. 20 yards on 3 receptions is great, especially playing with this front.

I want to see him with a pass rush.

I think Byron is solid. Doubt he'll ever be an Ed Reed, Polomalu or even Darren Woodson, but he should be a quality starter for a long time.

He reminds me of Michael Downs. He is not a physical safety -- I can't believe he let a RB easily blow him up when he blitzed -- but he will be in position and he will make plays.

I agree. And it will be hard to compare him to other guys, because he's kind of playing a new, hybrid role.

Downs, now that's a blast from the past. I remember when he and Everson Walls came in here as undrafted FA's and made immediate impacts and started.

He's played well so far imo. As a rookie playing CB and now being shifted to safety. I think the more experience he gets at safety he'll be the least of our concerns.

Jones has played very well. Are we really complaining about a 2nd year player this early in the season? He was supposed to take a bit of time to become really good. I think he's been better than I expected this quickly.

The RB pretty much blindsided him. Jones did not think the guy could or would make it all the way over from the other side.

I'm thrilled with him, but mostly it's because it minimizes Wilcox's time on the field. On one of those long passes yesterday, Wilcox ran through my living room on his way to cover the WR. That was surprising.

One more note. PPF has Jones ranked as the 6th best safety in the league this year, and the 2nd best safety in coverage.

Granted the sample size is still small and PFF isn't the be-all and end-all, but it's something.

Perhaps. I watched it several times and Jones looked tentative. I wish he was more aggressive but not so much as to overrun the play as Wilcox would most likely do.
