Byron Jones: Are we concerned yet?

Hello, my name is Meat and I typically only post when a thread is absolutely absurd and full of false information. Anyone who thinks Byron Jones is a bad pick or bad football player didn't watch him at all last year and doesn't watch highlights. Anyone who thinks he can't tackle clearly did not keep a close eye on him last year. These comments are so far from the truth, that you guys seriously must not watch much Cowboy football at all. Are you guys fair weather fans or what?

Last year, he made play after play. Regardless of no interceptions, he makes splash plays all the time. He did so game after game last year. In fact, he did so well last year he already has a video highlight reel of making so many plays. Can't say that for Barry Church or Wilcox can we? The fact of the matter he makes twice, triple the plays that our other safeties do. At this point, he is no doubt an upgrade to our position from what we had with Church and Wilcox. I'm not going to argue about other players they could have taken, but this so far has been a solid pick.

Zordon, AmericanCowboy, anyone else with mutual thoughts, if you think he tackles poor/doesn't contribute please, please watch this video:

I watched all these plays in this video as they happened last year. Maybe neither of you didn't catch them, so I figured it'd be a good video for you to watch.

As you can see, he makes a lot of plays and tackles well. I'd go as far as saying he's one of the better tacklers on the team besides Sean Lee. He consistently has enough speed to cover receivers/TEs and deflect balls time after time. In the Carolina game, he made 2 back to back plays deflecting balls from Carolina receivers in the endzone. He covered Gronk and limited his play extremely well. He covers all the good TEs and limits what they can do. He's a big, fast, physical defender. He uses his speed and arm length to cut off curl routes right at the tail end over and over. He gets his arm in front of the ball right when a receiver is about to catch it all the time for the deflection.

As far as him coming out for Wilcox - this is a question the media asked Jason Garrett. You know what Jason Garrett said? He said "he likes to keep his players fresh at all times." He didn't come out because he was doing bad. He came out because he wanted a fresh player and wanted to give Wilcox a chance to make some plays. If he isn't making plays this year, it's because the coaches aren't putting him in position to do so. He's obviously a talented player. I mean it really is OBVIOUS. If you don't see it you're oblivious and must not see the good out of anything. People like you only see bad, never good.

You can say he doesn't tackle, you can't say he doesn't contribute, you can say all that but the fact of the matter is you'e flat out wrong. Look at his numbers and tape compared to our other defensive players. Anyone that thinks he's a bad player clearly is just a negative person.

It disgusts me that you guys are Cowboys fans and know none of this. All you have is something negative to say. Go be a fan of another team if you don't watch the games. It amazes me how people can talk so much trash about their own team, it makes you wonder if you're really a fan or just a troll. I don't agree with everything the Cowboys do, but I'm still a fan and it's not in me to talk trash about my own team. Two people talking trash about their own team sounds like two Cowboys haters that secretly like another team, but are too afraid to do it. You picked the team, you either like them or you don't. It amazes me how many fair weather fans there are on here. If you don't like the Cowboys anymore, stop watching them. Stop being a fan. It's like being married and hating your wife but never leaving or doing anything about it. If you don't like her, get a divorce and leave. The Cowboys don't want fans like you, nor do they need you. If you don't like the Cowboys, simply get them out of your life.

BJ will be fine, and a couple of INT's will put to rest all this nonsense some of yall are flapping your gums about him being a bust.

That article was so bad. Just a bunch of rambling with no substance. My favorite part was (something like) "Based on pre-season stats and his career numbers (one season), he's a bust." Preseason stats. Pre. Season. Stats. Then he did nothing productive with the stats. If you're going to make an argument based on stats, you better show how they stack up to past busts and studs. But no; just said he and his buddy couldn't remember a big play and that he's no Marcus Peters or Honey Badger.

This is a great post. Jones is a great pick for us and is only going to get better.

With so many posters saying he's a bad pick, it makes me wonder if Cowboys zone has jumped the shark to absurdity.

I seen the caption of the article on twitter posted by someone. I didnt bother to read the article based on that alone. I wasnt going to pollute my brain with such nonsense.

I've always hated the Byron Jones pick.

He was a marginal player who didn't make many plays in college, so I certainly don't expect him to turn into a consistent play maker in the NFL.

Face it, the Cowboys are just the latest sucker to overdraft a player based on his NFL combine performance.

Well, I'm concerned but not discouraged . . . I tempered my expectations long ago -- perhaps we all should!

Was he out for Wilcox? I thought he was up at the line while Wilcox was deep.
It seems the Cowboys had a good feel for when the Gmen were going to go to their TE in certain formations and the Cowboys had Byron right up on them and he excelled there. Something the average Joe seems to miss since he didn't have 3 picks.

Lol, do we have any good DBs on this team? I didnt hear Claiborne's name sunday which is a good thing. The rest of these guys suck
Other than ODB's 70 yard catch and run, they allowed like 140 yards passing. o_O

Holy **** this fan base is humiliating sometimes.
This site used to be good, now it's just toxic with overreacting fans. Dez is old and washed up after Sunday, let's trade him. I swear, Jones is a bust after one year. Let Tyron Smith or Martin have a bad game this weekend, there will be a let's trade him thread. Remember seeing a thread about benching Collins for Leary Sunday, Really?

I've been holding back my judgement for Byron Jones until last week. I seen too much to keep quiet any longer. He was from a weak division in college, often times getting burned in what I thought was pretty easy passing schemes. He jumped 20 feet and cashed in on that alone. Honestly scouts had him going in the 4th to 6th rounds before that jump.

Now this, Wilcox beat out Jones for a starting safety spot. Put a fork in him, he's done.
Jones played amost twice as many snaps as Wilcox.

Nobody had Jones going any later than the 2nd round.

Not ready to call bust yet..but I think all of us would admit it'd be nice to see him make a couple plays in the next few weeks. Pass breakups, ints, forced fumbles, etc..

I don't see Byron forcing any fumbles. Does Earl Thomas force a bunch of fumbles? He's the free safety

Edit:just looked at Earl stats :(. Byron has 15 games to prove us wrong. We can't afford another Claiborne waiting 5 years to play good.

Ever heard of Charles Tillman. You don't have to lay the wood to be able to force fumbles. Dude had 44 FF in his career. Nerds to be taught to our DBs to be honest. I never see us looking to put our helmets in the ball or punch one out.
