Byron Jones Explains why he was so far off Cook on crucial play

Byron Jones sucks. That's another problem. He isnt a playmaker. He's an athlete. Darren Woodson, Eric Berry, Troy Polamalu, Ed Reed, all make that play... one of those guys is a free agent. Eric Berry. Sign him or the same crap will happen next year at a critical time in a playoff game AGAIN. Try Byron at CB because he is NOT a safety.
I saw Byron Jones make more then a couple good plays in that game. But the only one fans who like to belittle what athletes do like they can do it will only remember that one play. Jones is going to be FS for the Cowboys wether you like it or not.

Sometimes, explaining is best be unsaid......film don't lie.

Even a strategically placed mannequin on the field has a chance to make a play. This guy has zero instincts for a first round draft pick. He sucks.

They will play him until he blows enough coverages for them to look elsewhere. The signs were there in week 17 but it didn't get any press. Zach Ertz had a monster day against Jones, who was clearly in playoff form.

I suspect this time next year more people will come around to what you and a few others have been saying. Imaginary 3 year rule be damned, at some point you have to trust your own eyes and as you said this guy just doesn't have the instinct to play the position. And instinct is not a learned trait, you either have it or you dont. The next game breaking play this scrub makes will be his first.

This is the same place that said Mo can't play, Heath, wrote Dak off as a backup qb....among other dumb opinions. There were people here who said Tyron can only play right tackle. So I wouldn't use this place as a gauge of who will be good because the track history of posters on this site is terrible.

"I kept my eyes on Rodgers like I'm coached to"

Thats just rich. Anytime I watch our DBs their back is to the QB like a bunch of fools. Or is it just the safeties who are coached to see where the ball is coming from?

There are different types of defenses and coverages. Each coverage has different responsibilities. No team runs one defense all the time.

In a zone defense you are often taught to keep things in front of you and watch the quarterback so you can react to where they are going with the ball. If a player comes all the way across the field (like Cook did) it's easier for them to get behind defenders in the zone and become unaccounted for, that's one of the risks of playing a zone defense.

People are complaining about things they obviously know very little about.

You get a Like for using Pelleur in your user name.

As for Jones, I expect him to learn from this and be better prepared to defend it the next time.

You're commenting on things you know very little about. My post was in reference to our corner backs (zone and man), not the final play to Cook.

Lack of situational coaching. DBs shouldn't be concerned about a QB scramble as the clock would run out.

The ball was always going to be thrown 40 yds downfield in that situation - needed the yards to kick a FG and an interception doesn't harm them - just ends the game.

Remember when Parcells practiced situations and atypical scenarios everyday?

Rodgers doing his taxes in the pocket and Byron is the culprit. Lol

Dak threw his INT without pressure. Heath's INT that was called back came without pressure. Even his INT he did get was a quick play that the blitz got picked up on.

This notion that DBs aren't culpable when no pressure is made is ludicrous.

With our offense, even a good defense would be one of the best defenses in the league.

Do you know what our defensive ranking was for the season? My guess is we were above middle of the pack in the NFL.

By arguably one of the all-time best QB's playing at the peak of his game. Let's not burn Jones at the stake for one busted play (not saying that you are). If there is blame to go around, a fat chunk of it has to go to the lack of any meaningful containment or pass rush. It's a shame, for sure, but I'll bet you dollars to donuts that gets addressed pretty well in the off season, and Dallas is back in the playoffs next year.

I agree we will be back in the playoffs last year. On this particular play, I just think Byron shouldn't have worried about Rodgers running for 25+ yards and should have focused on his coverage more. I don't have many complaints for him right now.. I think he is a good player that just played bad on this particular play. If we had a legit pass rush, it would make his job a whole lot easier.

I don't see the logic in worrying about him running at all. They needed 36 yards to kick a 56 yard field goal, on top of that by the time he ran for 36 yards the time on the clock is zero. Unless he was going to run all the way for a Touchdown there was no need to worry about him running. I really hope you're wrong about this because if they were worried about him running there it is all time dumb.

That's the thing, it's not logical it's instinctual; if you look at the screen shot and remember the play there is nobody between Rodgers and a bunch of open field besides Durant, who was locked up with a o-lineman. You have to fight your instincts and turn your back to the QB and presumably let him run free.

He chose wrong. Dallas paid for it. Hopefully he learns from it, but the reality is it was play that only Aaron Rodgers makes...36-yard dime on the run.

over the last several years aron Rodgers is not the only qb who has made plays to end the cowboys season this is just normal stuff for the cowboys really

It looks like all the fans that couldn't get all their finger-pointing and complaining done during the season, because of all those pesky wins, are getting it all out now.

Bless your hearts.

He should have been like, I was wondering if there was a scheduling conflict with the NFL and WWE, because I saw Irving getting suplexed right off the snap and appreciating the well-executed move..
