Not sure if anyone caught this, and it was somehow absent from Jon Machota's tweets that WoodysGirl provided...

Calvin was asked about Dez, and here was one of his lines verbatim:

"Besides route-running, he's an all-around good receiver."

For some reason, the tweet from Jon Machota omitted the "besides route-running" qualifier. I wonder why. Reporters usually live for ammo like that.

Guess Calvin was reading my posts about Dez from yesterday lol.

Hopefully its motivation for Dez to actually improve in this area, and at least give him some fire in this game.

Calvin Johnson's comment about Dez's route running should serve as impetus for Dez to prove otherwise. Dez has come a long way toward beating that sort of criticism this year. Hopefully, he'll be 100% this game. Johnson should challenge Carr with his toughest test yet this season. Carr will need to perform well on Sunday.

Dez can do it all. I believe he may be the best Dallas Cowboy receiver ever when he really gets at it. You can tell Dez loves being a Dallas Cowboy. He is a pleasure to watch.

Make the QB run for his life and that negates any legit production that could come from Calvin...he will not go without catches, they just have to keep him in front of them

Can't knock Calvin for being honest. Dez hasn't needed to be a great route runner because he's just so much better physically than whoever lines up across from him.

In case anyone's interested in hearing it for themselves... the quote is 3:06 in.

I listened to it -- it didn't so much sound like a slam as it did Johnson providing his honest assessment of Dez.

What it really makes me interested how good/bad Dez's route running is. I've naturally assumed it has improved since the the middle of last year when he numbers started taking off. Has anybody (like Sturm maybe) written anything on Dez's route running?

Or is he insinuating that Dez has a limited mental capacity and cant learn a full route tree?

It definitely doesn't come across as a "slam", and his overall assessment of Dez was positive.

But he still said it. And I really am curious as to why Jon Machota omitted the "besides route-running" qualifier from his tweet. Isn't it a reporter's job to take a bland interview and highlight the quotes that viewers would find interesting?

Machota's tweet: Calvin Johnson on Dez Bryant: "He's always been a very good, big playmaker, 6-2, strong receiver. He's a pretty good receiver all-around."

He writes for the Dallas Morning News so he should have no allegiance towards Calvin. Why let Calvin off the hook from his comment by not reporting it? If it were Dez who said the same exact thing about Calvin, would that also be conveniently omitted?

Well I mentioned it yesterday in the top 5 WR thread, point blank he still has problems with the route tree and running good crisp routes in general, but he has gotten alot better at it. Alot better from awful is better, if thats the context you are looking for.

Dez is the best WR in the league with the ball in his hands, and might have the best hands in the league along with all the athleticism in the world. But a complete WR he's not.....yet.

I take it as "yeah he's a great route runner, but besides that he's great at many other things too.."

Calvin is a classy guy, I don't think he would take a shot at other players like that.
