Calvin says Dez isn't a good route runner

Well I'm not going to knock Johnson. He's probably the best in the business right now at the WR position and he definately has the right to his opinion. I respect it.

That said I hope Dez goes out Sunday and slam dunks the entire Detroit secondary and shines brightly over Johnson in a Cowboys victory.

So he's saying that when Dez improves his route running, he will be the best wide receiver in the league? I agree. because for someone who doesn't run routes good, he's a damn good receiver.

That catch Calvin made this past weekend proves he is still the best WR in the game. He jumped over 3 defenders to make the TD catch. Vs Dez having a hail mary pass go through his hands with 2 defenders behind him. I love Bryant and i think he will someday overtake Calvin as the best and he may do it this weekend. But as of today, Johnson still holds that title.

i found it hilarious that calvin can make this type of comment yet still goes under the radar but dez makes a harmless comparison and its BREAKING NEWS on every station.

I only remember one play this year where Dez obviously rounded a route, and it ended up being a big play, anyway, because he wasn't in close traffic. I think he's probably improved most in his adjustments. I say this, because we're not seeing the picks we saw early last year when Tony goes his direction. Dez's catch radius and his skills high-pointing and coming back for the ball make up for some of his route deficiencies. It's maybe not a strength in his game, but when you have his physical skills, it really doesn't have to be.

Loving the story line that's shaping up here between Dez and Johnson. It'd be pretty fun to see Dez go off and our defense somehow contain CJ. Let this be a statement game for Dez as to who belongs in the Best WR in the NFL argument, and start the ball rolling on a little swagger for this offense. Give the defense another chance to prove they've addressed the coverage limitations that were exposed in SD.
I'll say this Randy Moss was the best one route WR in NFL history with the go route and is HOF bound down the road as for Calvin taking a shot at Dez's route running, I didn't see it that way and Calvin is not that great of a route runner either but still has the record for most receiving yards in a season.

Route running is an artform but not every WR can do it and every one of them has a route/routes their comfortable with and it is all about coaches tailoring their schemes to the skills of their players in which I was always told but this isn't about Calvin vs Dez at the end of the day it's Dallas vs Detroit good post Idgit.

Well, if Calvin played for GB, New England, New Orleans, Baltimore, or New York...he would have played in a Super Bowl.

BTW, Calvin has been very complimentary of Dez this week. The press and some fans are just trying to stir things up.

That is why I have such disdain for the media because of garbage like this and fans eating it up like candy.

Woah. Is this coming from megatron?

Originally given that nickname (by roy williams) because of his robotic/stiff route running?

His route running is much better the past 2 years, but the first 5 years of his career he was kind of a bad route runner.

Dez has much more room For improvement. Calvin peaked last year....

I'd chose dez over calvin all day considering age and potential career production

LOL
wow

People will just pull stories straight out of thin air around here.

He got that name because (and only because) he was a total athletic freak...not even human..almost cyborg-like due to his size, speed, and athleticism.

I for one view as a positive Calvin I regarded as this untouchable greatness. From what I've noticed from Dez personality wise he seems like he will always try harder when someone is above him to beat out. I feel like being "the best" with no comparison would make him lazy so Calvin is a good thing for us

Dez should have caught that pass - that would have been a highlight of the week getting national pub. He has also had disheartening drops in the KC and SD losses and a bad fumble vs Denver. Not bashing him but he hasn't reached the consistent greatness yet that we all know he is capable of.

Well, I was curious as to why Jon Machota omitted the "besides route-running" qualifier from his tweet... and I may have found my answer.

From his Dallas Morning News bio...

"Jon Machota is a special contributor to SportsDayDFW.com. Machota, who was born and raised in metro Detroit..."

http://cowboysblog.***BANNED-URL***/author/jmachota/

I'm not on twitter, but someone who is really should call this guy out. It would appear the Lions fan in Machota came out and he protected his guy from a statement that would've made major waves if it were reported.

Interesting, never would have thought Dez numbers would be better until I seen this yesterday.http://i30.***BLOCKED***/albums/c333/spook930/133F382E-F7C0-4435-B642-6F76E3B5F80A-2431-000000DB551B486B_zps5f189f88.jpg

Dez entered an offense that was top 5 in yards and what could potentially be a HoF QB when all is said and done. CJ hasn't had a decent QB until Stafford came along. At the same time, the Cowboys weren't using Dez in the red-zone properly until this year in reality, plus he had JG as OC. There are just too many variables in discussing such dominant type of athletes.

Hey, everyone has flaws in their game, including Johnson, and I'm sure he'd gladly admit to his faults.

This is stupid because neither will be on the field facing one another... I'll take my 24 year old WR.

Ok, now lets look at the QBs they've had during that stretch.

Calvin Johnson

2007 / Jon Kitna / 80.9 rtg //
2008 / Dan Orlovsky / 72.6 rtg //
2009 / Mathew Stafford / 61 rtg //
2010 / Shaun Hill / 80.3 rtg //

Dez Bryant

2010 / Tony Romo / 94.9 rtg //
2011 / Tony Romo / 102.5 rtg //
2012 / Tony Romo / 90.5 rtg //
2013 / Tony Romo / 101.6 rtg //

Oh, and we haven't even mentioned all the offensive weapons Dez has had around him, since Day 1 Dez has had guys around him to take coverage off of him. Meanwhile Calvin has had NOBODY around him but himself, especially not a HoF TE or a top 10 QB throwing him the ball. To me it's not even close as to who's the better WR (as of right now), Calvin is a once in a generation talent, while Dez is a once in a decade talent. And that's not a knock on Dez, he still can ball better then 99.99% of the WRs in the NFL.

This is what Calvin Johnson has been dealing with since he's entered this league, and he still has the insane numbers.

Is there a more overhyped receiver than Calvin Johnson on a team that hasn't done squat since he's been on it?

Ditto for Andre Johnson. Fitzgerald has at least played in a super bowl.

Is there a more uninformed post than this?

Go look at the QBs that CJ played with before Stafford and it will make sense.

I don't know how much a slam that really was. I think that was Dez's big weakness, his route running. He has definitely improved and will continue to get better, I really believe that what has helped him to start living up to that early potential. He's been learning to run crisper routes, selling moves and working on timing and it's been paying dividends the last couple seasons. Imagine Dez with all his physical gifts and strength AND be able to run routes like Jerry Rice. The kid would be near unstoppable, the NFL would have to outlaw him! :p

I remember reading it was Roy Williams giving him a hard time as a rookie (wouldn't be the first rookie he's done it to) but the nickname stuck for other reasons.

And early on he wasn't a very good route runner. This is well documented. He's become an excellent one now though.
