As much as I love watching football (especially my Cowboys) , I have never understood what exactly a head coach does? If we have Def. coordinators and off coordinators and special teams coaches and kicker coaches and QB coaches....Does the head coach just manage the team and the coaches or does he actually coach? I know in our situation Wade is doing the Def..but in the normal run What is the duty of the head coach?

Head Coaches have multiple duties. These guys are for the most part the final say on any situation. The referees will be going to them. The Coordinators go to them. A Head Coach can veto any idea though they usually are not that staunch. Yes, they actually do Coach football. Most of them are involved in every aspect of the coaching, even Special Teams. I have never seen anyone work harder than my college Head Coach. He was at the Office by 4:00 AM and usually didn't get home until 10:00 PM or later some nights. They often sleep in their offices.

Different approaches to being a head coach--I've always liked the Bear Bryant approach: hire great coaches and let them coach, you then become a manager of coaches--never liked the dictators like parcells

Well, if you lose the NFC Championship game, then you get to coach the NFC Pro Bowlers in Hawaii, sit on the bench and eat a Hot Dog....Barry Switzer did it with Excellence!

"Well, see ... you walk into a great situation with a great defensive coordinator like Dick LeBeau, have someone call the plays for you, be a cool pal to your players and look real thoughtful during the game ... just like this."

My question to you is why ladiewolve, a compound word with two mispellings?
Was ladywolf too daunting or did you attend Farmers Branch schools?
;)

To answer yer question: a head coach manages the other coaches and is the (supposedly) the team's mouthpiece (or in the Dallas Cowboys instance that's Jerra) The HC answers the big questions of how and why and reports directly to the GM (in this case Jerra) or to the owner (in this case, Jerra).

A head coach really isn't needed. All you need is a defensive coordinator, offensive coordinator, special teams coordinator and GM (manager of personnel).

The head coach is just a figurehead. The above three can do everything a head coach does.

At some point, a team will figure it out and save money by not having a head coach. And when it works, every team will do it.

Well ..let's see here , I'm not sure if I'm suppose to take that as an insult or not but I didn't. I know its not spelled correctly. The answer to why is simple. When I was trying to get a yahoo ID for my e-mail , ladywolf was already used in a kabillion different ways. So I chose too spell it this way and I use it for a user name everywhere.:D :D :D :D
