Can La'el Collins play RT?

The truth is, we won't know until we know. A lot of talking heads have said player X can't play position Y and sometimes they were right and sometimes they were wrong. All we can do is wait and see what our team decides to do. I think the only given on the subject is that we can't resign Leary and not move Collins to RT. So if we believe he can play RT, I can see us resigning Leary or going with the cheaper option in Cooper. If we don't believe he can, I don't see any way we'd also keep Leary. It would then come down to keeping Free at RT for another year or putting all our eggs in the Green basket.

He has one year left on his contract. However, he will then be an restricted free agent and we could place a 1st round tender on him for around $3 million. So technically we control him fairly cheap for two years (or get a 1st round pick next offseason as compensation if some team wanted to sign him).

I Would love to keep Leary, but his cost will more than likely be too high, and as others have said he does not appear to be willing to give a hometown discount.

Yeah that changes things. It would be hard to walk away from his talent and that price for two more years.

No point in moving him. We only have him for one more year anyway. Way too much money is/will be invested in our Big 3 OL. Seriously doubt we are going to pay anywhere close to premium on the other 2 OL positions. Thus, as long as Collins progresses next year, he will be offered a pretty decent contract elsewhere and move on to a more lucrative situation.

Collins played some RT in OTA's when he first came to Dallas and was terrible, struggled with his footwork and technique.

He was quickly moved to LG where he has stayed the last two years, he has never played RT in college or in an NFL game.

Prior to the draft, scouts looked at him as a possible swing tackle but Brugler and others viewed him ideally suited for G in the NFL and based on what the Cowboys have done with him accordingly, he is right.

I think the question is not can he play RT but rather should he attempt to play any RT since he is better suited at playing G in the NFL.

Free agency and the draft can add to the RT position depth with players who are ideally suited to play the RT position.
False.

That was never on video. I was there. Didn't happen.

You're probably quoting Broaddus.

As crazy as it sounds, it might be Martin at RT someday.
Why would we move one of the best guards in the game to tackle?
Out of necessity is one thing, just to do it in a whim and hurt the interior of your oline doesn't seem smart to me

None of it is Broaddus. I wish they would try him there again and think he would succeed. However it was widely reported that he was tried at RT in OTAs.

"The undrafted free-agent rookie is being used at right tackle in place of the injured Doug Free during this week's organized team activities. Collins is doing his best to catch up after starring at left guard and tackle at LSU.

"It's definitely a new position for me, so a new challenge," Collins said, per the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "I have to go out each and every day and focus on the small things -- my technique, my assignments. It's been a great two days for the OTAs."

“We think he has the physical ability to play a couple of different spots,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. “He was a tackle for most of his career in college but did play guard. We see him as a guy who can maybe do both of those things as he goes.

“The big thing for him is to try to get him acclimated as quickly as we can. So right now he’s going to play right tackle for us."

"Absent were right tackle Doug Free and left guard Ronald Leary, the players Collins would compete with for a starting job. After a few days at tackle in the spring, Collins has been used exclusively at guard"

With Doug Free recovering from offseason foot surgery, Cowboys rookie offensive lineman La’el Collins spent the first week of OTAs at right tackle. This week, he moved to left guard, which seems more likely to be his position when the season begins.

For Collins, who made no secret of the fact that his move to the right side took some adjusting, left guard brings a certain comfortability.

“You’re right there with down linemen, so everything is a lot quicker, which is good for me,” Collins said, per the Dallas Morning News. “I feel like that is part of one of my strengths, being able to get on guys quick is an advantage.”

Exactly right, Broaddus actually coves the team in house, no shocker there either that he witnessed the same.

Thank you for compiling the rest!

RT may be more important in the passing game but those 3 in the middle make the run game work
To me if you want a RT then draft one and keep the All Pro where he is

Why can't he play RT? Among other reasons his versatility was a reason for his draft projection.

He played LT at LSU in the SEC and was arguably the best lineman in the nation in that class.

I think if he was given the reps he'd be fine at RT. However, I think he has multiple Pro Bowl and possibly All Pro potential at G. So yeah.

In my opinion Collins is a mauler and needs to stay inside where he can use his pure strength and athletic ability to blow holes open and protect the quarterback.
