Can Noah Brown push Hanna/Swaim off roster?

so are you saying 4 TEs and 6 Wrs?

Dez, Twill, Beaz, Switz, plus two of Butler or Whitehead or Brown?

I tend to think its either 4 TEs or 6 WRs, but not both
Or...less likely but possible with how tough the defense cuts will be..... 5 WRs and 3 TEs
I think you could see 4 TE and 6 WR if they feel they can't afford to lose people, but do think its unlikely. I think 4 TE is almost set in stone. The one thing that might change that is something like a Hanna retirement.

But mostly right now I suspect it will be 5 WR, Dez, Williams, Beasley, Switzer, and Butler. The only question to me is do they think they need the sweep stuff with Lucky and how that could effect the lineup. I think Butler could be cut, but he's really the only backup X we have currently. We don't really have a backup Z, but I'm betting that could be Switzer in a pinch.

The Cowboys, more than some other teams, value WRs that can block. Noah Brown was a nasty blocker in college. He really appeared to enjoy blowing up defenders.

I felt bad for Mayle. He got ripped off on some of those blocks that were called holding. He pancaked a a defender a couple of times and they called it holding.

They did that with a few of our Cowboys even with Fredbeard. It wiped out a big run by Zeke.

The only way he's going to supplant your 4th string WR is with an Dak-like presence?
Yes. Butler is way ahead of Brown. And the Boys are expecting more out of him based on his third year in the system. You think Brown can beat him out with an average pre-season?

Dak went from a QB we wanted to see over a few years, to see if he was worth developing as the QB of the future....to back up after Moore broke his ankle to starter after Too went down.
Then he had to prove it, and he did.
So Brown can prove it as well, hopefully without any WR injuries. He is vying for a spot against an extra TE and maybe even a 4th TE. And maybe even if they keep a 3rd RB, if that guy is not Rod Smith.

The 2 WR's he is really competing with is Butler, and even Whitehead. I don't think they keep 2 rookie WR's with only keeping 5. So he really needs to stand out to make them keep 6. So the key is, can he standout out with more throwing to him or a rookie 3rd team QB...yeah, tough way to show you need to be on the 53.

But I think he can do it. Though he is also competing against if they keep an extra DB or DL as that 52nd or 53rd player.
Good points. Thanks for explaining more in-depth. I still don't think he supplants Butler, but I forgot about Lucky. I thought his place was going to be taken by Switzer, though.

He may get his chances with Dak.

I suspect the team to still barely play Dez and Witten until dress rehearsal. I believe Bease probably starts getting veteran days as well.

I don't think teams spend draft picks on guys they envision for the practice squad, you just have no guarantees there. They hope these guys make the roster and I would hope they give him a chance to showcase what he learned in camp.
I didn't say he wouldn't make the roster, just that he won't supplant Butler. Jazzcst had me consider that the Cowboys might not carry as many tight ends. I didn't consider that. Be that as it may, I don't think he'll play as much as Butler.

Any #5 WR who doesn't play ST and earns more than the minimum is a bubble guy.

Given how much Cowboys value position versatility, how they used Vince Mayle as a move TE when they had to, and Linehan's comments below, maybe Brown makes the 53 and we carry 6 WRs and 3 TEs (one of them Rico). Thoughts?

“[Brown] is a little bit of an all-around guy,” Cowboys offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said, via the Dallas Morning News. “He’s an outside receiver with a big frame. He’s kind of got a ‘tweener’ size (6-2, 222) when it comes to receiver. He’s got a little bit of a TE element to his game as far as his size and the matchup and the people he’s blocking. So he should match up well in that area.
“He’s a good receiver, too. He has a real consistent game, and he’s a smart kid, so we’re excited about him.”
I'm already thinking the Cowboys go 3 deep at TE regardless.

So Butler was a bubble guy last year? And let's say he was but the Cowboys decided to keep him. Isn't the same qualities he displayed to keep him last year even moreso this year?

I believe it's a different situation.

Bease really emerged last season, TW just got a new multi year contract and we just spent a draft pick on receiver...we also lost a couple special teams players on free agency. Remember...Butler was only acquired via trade after Dez went down in 15.

I like the player and think he makes the team but if it's close between him and Brown? I want Brown to get the nod. Receivers like Butler are a dime a dozen. Brown may not be much better but I am all for letting young guys play over veterans that may have already peaked.

We signed Butler to a one year contract, right? If so, he'll have this year to show whether he's a long-term solution. He doesn't show this year, he's gone, IMO.

Still a one year contract doesn't guarantee a roster spot...especially if it is only 300K guaranteed.

He was our 4th WR last year - with Switzer, he's likely down the chart by one. Why would you keep someone who isn't going to get much time on the field and who doesn't play ST?

Okay. I guess this will play itself out, and we will see.

I expect him to make it but I could see a scenario where he doesn't.

Dez, Bease, TWIll and probably Switzer are locks.

Butler is next in line but Noah Brown has a shot if he impresses, they just invested a pick in him and he may not make it to the PS if he has shines any in preseason. Everyone is writing him off but Whitehead is a veteran that can play special teams....if he improves at receiver, he has a shot. Also a lot of people like Andy Jones that are close to the team.

If the Cowboy keep 6...Butler is safe, he has to fight if they only keep 5 though.

Fair enough. I'm not writing Brown off. I just don't think he supplants Butler. But if he doesn't it won't be the first time I'm wrong and definitely won't be the last. :)

The Cowboys keep 5 for sure. 6 I think will only happen if Lucky makes himself too good to be dropped. Brown is a 7th round rookie who got probably should have stayed in school one more year. Maybe Brown can force himself to be kept, but he's going to have to do a lot of amazing things in the preseason and camp. Brown really seems like a practice squad guy.
