Can we admit that Church is terrible in space yet?

I don't have a problem with our S play this season. Not like I usually do. Church has limitations you have to work around, but he also has his strengths.

That coverage on the Tate play, though, that's a scheme liability in my book. You can't have Scandrick on the TE who's in blocking and your limited coverage S carrying a WR as good as Tate alone down the field. Wilcox had to support CJ, and at that point, you're picking your poison. We've got to change that up, because it's going to get picked on this week if we don't. (Unless we changed up later in the DET game. Does anybody know if we did?)

When we first lined up and I saw Wilbur out there my jaw dropped. I was shocked. Then Wilbur showed blitz on a hard count, it was obvious what the play was going to be, Stafford checked out and I was very concerned. We almost got to stafford, but he climbed the pocket really well and then threw. Church's stumbled was the final nail in the coffin, and Wilcox not getting there in time.

By the way - a lot of what I just described is what happened on TWill's first TD as well. The DB in coverage stumbled, safeties didn't close, it was a poorly designed blitz.

There are probably 30 teams that need to upgrade at the safety position. There hasn't really been a safety worth a first round pick, with the exception of Thomas and maybe Berry, in years. And with the rules in place to help receivers, I believe it's going to be just as easy to move a CB to safety than draft one. I'm not saying that we stop trying to find a better cover safety than Church but Church could start for a lot of teams in this league.

What does Scandrick have to do with Church outside of deflecting attention? They don't even compete for playing time.

Does a thread only have to do with bashing one player? I mean, is it exclusive to only Church?

Why lol? Even if you're statements are true. The big plays against this defense weren't against Scandrick. Him taking poor angles or missing tackles......I don't deny he may have done that. I just hold your coverage skills in higher regard than I do your tackling skills as a corner.

He had a bad game. He missed tackles or simply didn't react quickly enough in certain situations. I mean, I don't really care if you hold one above the other but it doesn't change the fact that he did not play very well, IMO.

Yes. Unless there is another player of the same position who is a backup that you would like to see playing and is your pet cat, please do not bring unrelated players into this.

I mean, Leary had a rough game but you didn't see a bunch of posts about him in my Parnell bashing thread did you?

This should be a bylaw on this site.

I have always wanted the Boys to draft a blue chip true free safety in the draft once and for all-------bite the bullet and take him #1 or #2. I've had enough of the converts trying to impersonate one. Can't even remember the last true FS who played here, but that's how long its been. I agree there aren't many and that's why you have to draft them high.

So you cannot ask him to pickup WR in zone coverage or come up and make a tackle in space yet he is a good player.

When did I say he can't make a tackle in space? He has been very good at tackling in space. He got turned around on a double move against a guy who is much quicker than he is. I would suggest that most safeties in this league would have a hard time guarding Golden Tate. Don't get me wrong, I would love to have a rangy FS out there, but they are pretty rare.

What blue chip free safeties have come out of the draft in the last 5 years? You have to go all the way back to 2010.

Draft a safety and sign a free agent DL, or vice versa.

This is the problem on the Tate TD. Scandrick is guarding no one, while you have Barry Church 1 on 1 against Golden Tate. 6 people rushing and no one gets home.

Church was juked and turned around then trailing Tate on the play and was clearly beat.

Church then fell as he attempted to dive on him, so clearly it was a mismatch that should of never been!

He's not a NFL safety. He's listed at 6'2 and 218 pounds. Put 15 pounds on him and move him to LB.

Probably not very many.

Let me say it this way: we need one safety whose strength is that he can play in the box and be a sure tackler. The second has to be able to play in space that can cover slot receivers and TE's.

Church and Wilcox can do the first, but not the second.

Not to mention Wilcox's ceiling is much higher than Church as a SS. Better hitter and much faster/agile in space.

Exactly, he was completely turned around which is something you do not do against any WR, especially with some speed. He lost valuable space just trying to get his bearings back and was totally beat right after that. Obviously I am no expert, but common sense says if you are not going to bump the guy, then just face him all the way and run with him. Not only was it bad technique, but no speed. Bad combo.

this was a bad play all around, Carter should probably be on the RB in the flat who is wide open and Scandrick doesn't know where he is. But hey, at least we probably had Megatron covered.

I've thought for a while now that, even with all of his warts, Wilcox is much, much better safety than Chuch.

Wilcox has natural athleticism and is still green, whereas to me, Church is a "try hard" guy (just like Hayden) with limitations.

That said, they both need a lot of work in taking the right angles.

I know he has his legions of supporters but I for one never want to see him taking the deep middle or deep half again.

The Tate TD was an example but they called on him to bracket Megatron several times and the play from 12 yards away technique just isn't going to do.

We need a true FS in the worst way.
I think you get too emotional when a player has 1 dramatically bad play. Church is good enough.
