Captain Checkdowns

Barry Switzer once said "Don't coach caution into good players." Now I know our backup QBs are good, but we have coached caution into this whole team. They play scared, and it shows.

You can see the difference in coaches like Pete Carroll and Jason Garrett. Carroll encourages his players to play with confidence and take chances Garrett is too calculated and too conservative. He reminds me of people who are afraid of change.

How much of it is conservative play calling, which is the normal course of action with a backup qb, and how much of it is the Seahawk's design of their defense, not allowing the deep ball?

Forget about the deep ball...

What about the short passing plays designed to get opened.

That concerns me more then lack of deep balls.

We don't have plays that get guys open like we have seen the last 3 weeks from our opposition.

13 completions for 97 yards?

That is worse than I thought. I know it was painful to watch.

We're the only team that seemingly can't or refuses to design plays to help give WRs separation.

Even with the 3 INTs, I kinda miss Cassel winging it away all over the field. Not sure what happened today.

Three interceptions last week happened. I think Cassel didn't want to throw 5 picks this week against a MUCH better secondary than the Giants, so he kind of went into a shell.

So when Weeden and Cassel check it down, why do we think the coaches are responsible? The plays are the plays. Did you guys watch the little video shown on plays? Dez was totally smothered by Sherman and had to break up 2-3 passes. Beasley couldn't get open; Witten was bracketed. Like Weeden, Cassel was looking downfield every time before passing underneath.

Anyone remember Aikman' final years without Irvin? Lots of 3rd down passes to Moose for 1 yard...it was infuriating, but QBs are trained to go through the progression and take something positive even when it results in a punt, hoping the receiver makes a play. The Cowboys have a downfield passing game with Linehan rather than a West Coast style of rubs and short crossing routes. When Dez and Williams can't get open down field and Witten can't hit the seam, it's Beasley or RB time.

Not a single slant to Dez; they clearly don't trust Williams on a slant, and even in the red zone twice, no targets for the big target of Escobar. It's infuriating, but I'm ready to go back to Weeden who at least knows the offense and receivers best among the QBs. Our QBs stink, so I'd go with the guy who's been here two years and start over in the offseason if I see no improvement.

They are not playing to win. They are not taking chances. They never go for first downs on first down. They are the most predictable team on offense in the league to the extent they are boring as hell to watch.

Good point. Where the hell is Cole Beasley?

Isn't this the same topic as the coaching thread?

Any neutral observer of last weeks game would say the Cowboys were highly likely to have won that game with a slightly more conservative offensive strategy.

The Cowboys with their backup QB were very close to winning against the Seahawks. If the game is close with Cassel as the QB then the coaching was probably not a huge part of the problem.

moral victories are no longer doing it for me - 5 big fat Ls in a row.

Love this team, 3rd and 10 let's throw a 4 yard pass.

Dallas is playing not to lose, instead of playing to win !!!! How's that working ?

Seriously I would rather lose gunslinging the ball all over the field than playing this garbage conservative scheme. Its obvious that these coaches don't trust the backup Qb's and have them on a leash, which is hampering there play.

There's a difference between looking down the field and looking downfield with confidence. Even with a no-name receiving corps, the Panthers mustered a solid offense against Seattle in Seattle (27 points, ~7 ypa) with a turnover differential of -2. I'll defer to the columnists and posters who break down the 22's for the entire game, but I strongly suspect they'll find missed opportunities just as they did against NE. Probably more given that Dez was playing and should have been able to clear things out for Beasley.. I agree that coaches probably would never tell a qb to just dump it off and average 4 yards per attempt, but they're probably coaching them to err on the side of caution, which for guys who probably aren't that confident in what they're seeing anyway, will result in what we've seen the last few games. There probably isn't a good solution here unless someone knows how to get school cancelled early in Kitna's district.

Seriously, I think Kitna could do better than the two stooges we have marched out there. In fact, I know he could.

At this point, I am so disgusted, Kellen Moore seems appealing. How much worse could the kid be?
