Carter to Bulk Up and Be Used as Nickel Rusher?

Actually, they had him in the Derrick Brooks mold LAST YEAR, and he failed. Brooks was a WLB that made a lot of tackles in the run game, yet excelled in coverage. Brooks only had 13.5 sacks in his 14-year career.

Now, let's look at Derrick Brooks who succeeded in Tampa due to Warren Sapp and Booger McFarland... but mainly Sapp for many years. Add a healthy Simeon Rice and you have a recipe for havoc all along the D-line. But you go ahead and continue your agenda. I won't buy into it one bit. ...... Next!

I suggested using Carter as an edge rusher a couple of years ago and got the foam finger.

If it's my call, he'd try it in the spring and summer. Just to see if anything's there.

I wanted to do this with Ware and Spencer producing. I certainly would try it with Selvie and Mincey penciled in as the starters.

I've always thought that way too. In fact when he has rushed the passer I've mistaken him for Ware until I see the 5. I'm all for more carter on the blitz.

Bad idea.

I mean, if you're Carter and your contract ends next year, and you can split to a team that doesn't suddenly change things every year, why would you bulk up and lose your best asset - your speed?

I wouldn't.

I for one would absolutely love to see Carter in this role, particularly if used how Seattle used Cliff Avril last season. I think he could have a monster year and absolutely terrorize quarterbacks. Last year he was hesitant to contact because the zones schemes made him gun shy. He was thinking too much in a defense built around not having to think. In other words, he was over thinking it. He was in his own head. If you go back two years, to his second year in the league, the guy was our most physical defender and a wrecking ball out there. Get him back to playing north and south and I guarantee you get some excitement and some playmaking ability.

Bravo to Marinelli, already trying to get creative. If only he could coordinate offense too....

If they drafted him ........ you would suddenly hate the guy.

And if we didn't, he'd be all over how we should have traded up for him (if he does well) and totally silent if he does nothing

It's a good idea in theory, but I dont think Carter has the willingness or motor to fight off blocks or set the edge vs the run. Just not his MO.

And Holloman, if capable of being a starting nfl player, would be best at WIL. He's a former S who is good in coverage for a LB.

A lot of people seem to be writing off Durant for some reason though. I think he's still the best option for SLB/SAM/whateveryouwanttocallit on our current roster.

Durant is getting cut.

He is a liability in coverage and he knows it. If he stays at Will he'll be getting burned by Darren Sproles twice next year. He'll make more money at the Sam. He definitely can get to the QB and looks good at it. He'll rotate with Wilber who should be used liberally as well.

Marinelli has a philosophy of not throwing more at a guy than he can handle, and he will ease up if the guy is getting confused and making mistakes. Carter needs to back up and be used less in coverage. That will help him and his better play will result in a better contract next year.

Rather see him moved inside and Lee moved to weak side LB and Holloman at strong. For some reason Carter excelled two years ago at MLB when Lee went down and before he, Carter himself went down. Might help Lee stay a little more healthy too, not always being right in the middle of the pack.

If anyone can bulk up, it's Carter. Dude apparently eats McDonald's all the time.

He wouldn't need to bulk up to play SOLB in this scheme. They've used SS types in the past at that spot. The coaches have already said that the SOLB in this defense is a dumping ground of whoever doesn't when a spot at the other two positions.

Nor would I. Doing something like that is an admission of failure at his natural position. He would not like it nor should Dallas push it even if they are thinking that way, which I do not think they are.

He will end up like Felix Jones, Mike Jenkins and Martellus Bennett. A "budding star" that never came to fruition in Dallas. I think he will probably try to go to a 3-4 team as that is what he appears to be suited for based on his pro productivity.

This is a good post. What most fans in this forum don't emphasize enough is how BAD we've also been at developing talent. Drafting IS crucial and everyone knows that, but developing players physically and MENTALLY is big too. (in fairness, all three of those guys had character questions coming out of college and to some extent those issues were pretty apparent in Dallas)

Right now, we appear to be good at taking already good talent and maintaining it.

We have drafted recently the debatable number one physical talent/prospect at their position for several years in a row, from Dez Bryant to Tyron Smith to Morris Claiborne.

I have a hard time naming that unheralded prospect that not only developed but maintained that star level consistently for several years. Carter was emerging and hit a huge wall. Austin was the same way but took longer to flame out. I guess you could say the last player that we "developed" was Tony Romo.

Carter as a rush man during nickel situations sounds about right giving the athleticism and speed he brings too the defense, Rod getting players in position.

In college, he was known for his ability to come off the edge during kicks. He excelled as a kick blocker. So, we he must have good speed/bend coming off the edge. Guess Rod has seen this and wants to capitalize on this trait.

At some point you have to move on from players or even try to trade them cheaply to get something. I am not Rod M. but I trust him to get the most out of players, but I don't want to make players fit if they fail in what they SHOULD be able to do. Carter needs a fire lit under his read end. Fish or cut bait.
