If Carter moves to Sam then WIll becomes a big need, and that's a position in this defense that's right at the top in terms of importance. That's your playmaker in the back 7. Definitely worth a 1st Round pick if there's a guy they like.

I think the WLB is a need regardless if anyone is moved. That, along with the three technique tackle, needs quality play. If Carter is truly being moved to the strongside, it is a bit scary for his future in a Dallas uniform, especially if we keep this scheme for any length of time.

I would honestly put Lee on the weakside regardless and draft a more durable MLB if the right one is available. The only drag on that is they had better be able to cover. All the LBers need to get better at it. Lee is the best we have currently.

He is a liability in coverage and he knows it. If he stays at Will he'll be getting burned by Darren Sproles twice next year. He'll make more money at the Sam. He definitely can get to the QB and looks good at it. He'll rotate with Wilber who should be used liberally as well.

Marinelli has a philosophy of not throwing more at a guy than he can handle, and he will ease up if the guy is getting confused and making mistakes. Carter needs to back up and be used less in coverage. That will help him and his better play will result in a better contract next year.

I like this idea but I'm not sure where this guy is going to play. He appears lost in coverage at times (read a lot), doesn't shed blockers well, and is not instinctive. I'm at a lost of where to play him. I don't think the Sam is a great fit and in fact not sure where he should go. Lose some weight and play RB maybe. Spot rusher. Or buck up and learn where to be and when. I don't have a lot of hope for a guy who is not instinctive trying to play him at LB.

Will is already a big need.

I for one would absolutely love to see Carter in this role, particularly if used how Seattle used Cliff Avril last season. I think he could have a monster year and absolutely terrorize quarterbacks. Last year he was hesitant to contact because the zones schemes made him gun shy. He was thinking too much in a defense built around not having to think. In other words, he was over thinking it. He was in his own head. If you go back two years, to his second year in the league, the guy was our most physical defender and a wrecking ball out there. Get him back to playing north and south and I guarantee you get some excitement and some playmaking ability.

Bravo to Marinelli, already trying to get creative. If only he could coordinate offense too....

Very insightful post. Avril is listed at 260 pounds so Carter could get close to that and hopefully not lose his speed. And you're exactly right, Marinelli and Kiffin are looking at what's working around the NFL and putting the players we have in the best position to be successful.

It's worth noting Broaddus didn't back this claim up with anything. It was just something he threw out there and asked, "How do you like that idea?". I don't know why the rest of the hosts didn't press him on it more, really.

He's also said if they drafted Barr he would play him at SOLB and rush in the nickel. I can't agree with either of those. If they want a guy like that they already have Wilber there. I put Barr at WDE and have my Haley/Ware type.

The fact that it took rod to do this signifies that he's moving in the right direction. Carter is too fast to keep in the middle or Westside and not blitzing. We have to use him in a derrick Brooks mold. Carter will be a good player just ease him into it.

In rod I trust....

Couldn't have said it better

Now, let's look at Derrick Brooks who succeeded in Tampa due to Warren Sapp and Booger McFarland... but mainly Sapp for many years. Add a healthy Simeon Rice and you have a recipe for havoc all along the D-line. But you go ahead and continue your agenda. I won't buy into it one bit. ...... Next!

Huh? My agenda? All I did was explain that Carter played the WLB role last year that Brooks played his entire career. And, he was NOT successful - the coaches basically demoted him for Ernie Sims for a couple of games. That's FACT - no agenda here. NEXT!!!!!

Yes, I think Broaddus was just saying that it's something that could happen. I'm not sure that he ever said that they are planning to do it.
