I’m sure Mike and Solari are going over all these scenarios as we speak

Plenty of examples of elite LT who played well into their 30s.

He has some miles on him but didn’t have to endure a full season last year. They could and should expect at least one more season out of him.

I figured Trent Williams was at least nearly cooked when Washington traded him. Not at all.
I did too….crazy Trent is still dominant….I keep Tyron if he gets oh well it’s a risk you take but he’s well worth it.

Unless the Cowboys are blown out of the water by another team cap Guru Stephen needs to sign this man to a new contract . I was relieved last season to see Williams and Collins depart but McGovern in tandem with Martin form a nice guard duo with hopefully Farniok coming back healthy as depth .

Bringing him back after you’ve invested his rookie contact getting him up to speed as a starter means one less fire to put out in the draft where other positions are lacking .
My guess their plan and rightfully so will be to slide Tyler back into that left gaurd, Tyron back to left tackle, and letting Waletzko/Ball fight it out in camp to see who gets to start those 3or 4 games till Steele gets back. Farniok and one of those 5ths can back up at guard! Don’t see him coming back for much more than league minimum in large part because he’s not worth much more than that!

IMHO hes stil not the big physical run grading Guard we could use. When steel went out the run game suffered and believe we need better run grader then CM..hes been solid but im most likely looking for run centric built Guard next to TB because TB is little light in the pants himself and next to each other is a weak spot in the line for the run game.

The case you make for him is
1) Sunk cost fallacy.
2) He fills a depth chart spot.

1) is called a fallacy for a reason.
2) There's a point to it if he's cheap enough, but we'd be signing a guy who has shown he's just not a starter you want. PFF has him skimming the bottom of starting Gs. This is not a guy to pay free agent money to, IMO, and we only sign such guys if we get a ridiculous deal, like we did with LVE last year.
McGovern would be a classic bridge free agent to sign while we draft a mid round player hoping to replace him on the cheap. That's the most contract we should consider, and likely the only one we will consider.

Another solution at LG is what we had *planned* for this year: Tyron at LT, Tyler at LG.

That has the *potential* to be *great*, but again with the health risk that comes with Tyron. If Tyron can still be Tyron, his salary is a good deal, and if he really can be healthy, he could solve LT for a few more years.

Keeping Tyron is the Jerry move. Give yourself the best possible upside by taking on some extra risk at having kept a player too long. I expect that's what Jerry does. For good and bad, Jerry gonna Jerry.

But in that case, we've got a starter, and should definitely be drafting the midround guy to develop behind him. McGovern would have to take *backup* bridge money to stay. 3mil tops.

If we do Tyler at LG, we should still be cross-training him at LT. This protects us against Tyron injury, and shows our commitment to him as our *eventual* LT.

I'm leaning against it. If our intent is to keep Tyron around and possibly even bring back Peters, what McGovern will get as a free agent can be spent elsewhere because we'll expect our starting line to be Tyron/Peters, Tyler, Biadasz, Martin and Steele, which is a stronger lineup than one with McGovern.

Of course, that's a questionable lineup because of Tyron and Peters' age and health. But we do have Farniok, who has proven to be a decent sub if needed. Plus, I'm interested in seeing Waletzko at tackle. I'd also like to see us grab another guard in the draft around the third or fourth round.

Now, if we decide to "retire" Tyron, then I would see what McGovern is seeking and consider it. But I think our goal should be improving the line rather than maintaining the status quo. Going back to the plan to start Tyler at guard can improve the line, esp. with Steele back at RT. It's an iffy proposition because of Tyron's ongoing health issues, but I think we can mitigate that some without paying what it would take to keep McGovern.

Let’s put it this way folks I’m comfortable letting Schultz $ go while going Ferguson Hendershot if it means you keep the starting five at OLine next season . With 77 and Steele at RT either as depth with a Farniok G / C depth . Probably going to go with a linemen somewhere in draft

I think LT is so critical a position the more and more i watched Tyler Smith the more I want that position stable for the length of his rookie contract and probably beyond . Leave him protecting the NFL “ man of the year “ blindside while pulling out and pancaking edges .

I’m not as certain Zekes ineffectiveness down the stretch was due to line play or 21 himself . Certainly Malik Davis would have jolted the run game but the powers that be were asleep .

Replacing McGovern with mid to late round pick in the draft is a step backwards . Heck let Farniok have a shot before another mid choice if that’s your answer.

Schultz money and tag most likely shift to Pollard, letting CM walk use that money for DT like Payne

so draft an OG that the run game is his strength. maybe Farniok starts at LG until the rookie slowly gets going.

I’m certainly in favor of making a run at Payne using Schultz $ .

I think McGovern is going to get more money from other teams than we think. Austin Corbett, of the 2021 Rams, got $8.5 million in free agency. I think McGovern is going to get something like that. I also think that is too rich for the Cowboys.

Remember, Farniok started the season at LG when McGovern was injured. He really wasn't that bad. Keep in mind McGovern wasn't great until this year either. Farniok is still developing.

If Steele is back then I am sure Dallas will move Tyler Smith inside to LG and Tyron Smith to LT. Until then Farniok can play LG in a pinch.

I had. 5 maybe 6 mill # in mind 8.5 blows Dallas out but yes other teams will pay . The Dolphins seem happy to have taken Connor Williams off Dallas hands.
