CFP thread

Correct. The Big 10 had 2 teams that were better than anyone in the SEC. Thats a first. Whether it continues remains to be seen.
I mean last year, three of the four semi finalists were Midwest schools and the SEC “team” was Texas in their first year in the conference.

This isn’t a one year trend here.

Even longtime SEC homer Clay Travis admits that, at least for now, the SEC is not king.

Lol. It’s like you don’t even pay attention.

Literally, 5 of the last 18 college football champions were non-Alabama SEC teams. 2 were LSU, 2 were Georgia, and 1 was Auburn.

Literally, more than 25% of recent college football champions were non-Alabama SEC teams.
But sure… The SEC dominance is mainly due to Alabama.

yes it was. he forced others to match him. Now that he is gone, that pressure is gone. and both alabama and the reason to match it is gone. But really try and use logic instead of statistics. You will figure things out

GA is down a peg; we will see if it recovers. Clemson was a super team for a few years and now is meh. Teams go up and down.

and in 2023 only one SEC team in and it lost in the semifinal. So three years in a row the SEC did not even make it to the finals

Lets stack them up:

OSU - Alabama
Michigan - Texas
Indiana - UGA
Oregon - oklahoma
USC - LSU
Iowa - A&M
Illinois - Tennessee
Minnesota - Ole Miss
Washington - Vandy

Its pretty close but obviously, the top of the Big 10 has been better.

Just to clear up the stupidity spouted by some here

They claim you can only be a real fan if you attended a school

which means in the pros you can only be a fan of your home town or home area team.

Which means no one has freedom of choice

pretty pathetic
Good grief man, no one needs to reach this much.

Let's cover basics.
1. People that attend college made a CHOICE and COMMITTMENT to attend that college. They put in some sweat equity.
2. Very few people "choose" an NFL team. When TV was regional which is the majority of existence people were force fed local games and became a fan that way. They watched local news which covered ONLY local teams. And read local papers which covered local teams. The Dallas Cowboys were the only team that broke that barrier and received national coverage.
3. There are very large differences between casual and passionate fans.
4. People choosing a team because they are a big brand are also the absolute worst fans. Those people make up the dumbest segment of Cowboys fan by a wide margin. Same for Lakers, Yankees and any massive college brand like Duke basketball.
5. You can be a passionate fan without attending the school. But if you have never even been on the campus and are over 25 years old you are NOT a passionate fan IMO. --I am a moderate Chelsea fan and I have been to England and to Stamford Bridge in Fulham.

Hit dogs holler. You know how passionate you are or are not. ONLY you know if you have talked the talk and/or walked the walk.
This is a debate without any final conclusion because it is all opinion.

Another weirdness from college football fans. A very strange importance placed on how good their conference is. Don't understand the relevance, honestly.

(Casual college football fan here, BTW)

It's relevant bc it impacts strength of schedule which impacts the CFP rankings. The SEC finished with 7 teams in the top 15. That pisses off a few people in this forum. My guess is this is mostly about Alabama making the playoff in spite of losing 3 games. They made it bc they had a higher ranked SOS and more quality wins than ND or BYU whom they leapfrogged in the final poll. So, they say "oh, the sec isn't that good and Bama shouldn't have had that SOS bc it was inflated by the conferences past performance and reputation". yada yada

A 10-2 team from a strong conference is going to make the playoffs over a 10-2 team from a weak conference (or even an 11-1 team from a weak conference). For example, this year the SEC definitely benefitted from perpetuating the myth that they are far superior to the other conferences.

only change is P4 champ Duke would get in...
insanity.
They said that about Duke, but maybe with the 9 game schedule, Miami would've won the tie-breaker over Duke to play in the ACC Title game.
My guess is they would have, as it was such a thin margin

Plus, next year, the ACC will have ranking as a tie-breaker, so Duke would've been out by that alone.

ND automatically getting in if they are 12th seems arbitrary, but whatever.

I'm pissed at the Big Ten for not being willing, like everyone else, to go to 16 teams without the guarantee of 24 teams in 3 years. They probably would've gotten their 24 tewam wish anyway.

Good lord man. The SEC has won 6 of the last 10. So, it's not a "myth". The Big 10 has won the CFP the past 3 years. Michigan was a one year wonder. They haven't been good the last 2 years. The past 2 OSU teams have been super teams with a ridiculous amount of NFL first round picks and money spent buying players. NIL has opened up the fertile recruiting grounds of the southeast and Texas. Thats how they lure guys like Jeremiah Smith from Florida and Caleb Downs and Kayden McDonald from Georgia. In fact, OSU has about 25 guys from Georgia, Florida, and Texas. That never happened prior to NIL. These guys prior to NIL would never have left the SEC.

Indiana is the new kid on the block. It will be interesting to see how long they can hang.

It was a "myth" this year. The simple, undeniable fact is that the SEC was overrated this year based on past successes.

Call me crazy, but when determining who goes to the 2025 playoffs I don't think it is terribly relevant how a particular team (or conference) performed in 2018.

Oh I see. You are one of the Alabama haters. I agree. I don't think they belonged over ND, but the win over UGA was more impressive than anything ND did this year and they had a tougher schedule. But once they won a road playoff game in Norman,OK, the debate was over. They belonged. The teams that didn't belong were Tulane and JMU. Those are the schools that took CFP spots for arcane nonsensical reasons.

I don't hate a single college team. It would cloud my judgement if I did.
So you agree with what I said but, for some reason, that made me a "hater"..... ohhhhhh kayyyyyyyy..........

It is a very common conundrum. Alabama had better wins than any Notre Dame had but they also had worse losses than any Notre Dame had. We've seen it many times before and we will see it many times again.
