Old and we probably think he hampers development but could be a good instructor to young guys. Just don't think he has much game left.

Free agent Charles Woodson is now willing to join a team in rebuilding mode.

"When this process first started out, I needed to go to a contender," Woodson said. "I know I am toward the end of my career. At this point, I want to play football. So if it is a rebuilding stage, at this point if that is the circumstances I have to play under, then that is what I am going to do." Woodson is confused by the lack of interest in himself and other 30-plus-year-old free agents. Some teams that could still use safety help are the Panthers, Browns, Cowboys, Broncos, Chiefs, Vikings, Jets, Chargers, and Rams.

Hook him up with a vet minimum contract for a season. Immediately upgrades to the secondary, gives the young guys some well needed experience to learn under and with no commitment involved.

Reminds me of the John lynch situation. Left Tampa went to broncos then went to pats and released then retired before even preseason ended. Someone I think will pick up cwoodson but release him soon after. He's all but done

And cut who at either CB or Safety? Like I said, Cowboys want to see what the young guys have and can do. Mainly because they can play special teams, doubt Woodson provides that at his age.

I think the rookie cap has had the unintended effect of making young drafted players even more desirable for teams.

The idea was originally that the money saved on rookies would go to the vets. Instead, the bulk of it has basically gone to the Top 5% of players (primarily QBS) and teams have instead gone with drafted players knowing they'll be easy to get under contract and if they don't work out, cheaper to cut and try again.

I also think the owners knew this would be the case all along but the players probably bought the line about the money going to the vets hook-line-and-sinker.

McCray

Will Allen

I hope you aren't suggesting the the team can't find a player to cut in order to bring in a capable starting safety.

If getting a dozen or so snaps on special teams is more important than getting 60 or 70 snaps on defense then perhaps they would be in a bind.

Beyond that it's almost irrational to suggest they couldn't find a spot for him. Hell, carry an extra safety and cut a guy from some other spot on the team.

McCray is their special teams ace. Woodson doesn't play special teams. They just signed Will Allen. Pretty sure they want to see what they have in camp. Doubt any of those 2 get cut. As for a capable starting safety, club likes Church and Matt Johnson or Will Allen to be the 2 starters.

I'm mostly in agreement. I wouldn't mind Woodson being brought in for the vet minimum to where we could cut him if all the young guys work out, but I don't want to guarantee him a roster spot with all those young guys to look at.

If guys prove unworthy, Woodson might be a nice option to have.

I'm laughing at the idea that we can't find a roster spot for Charles Woodson. Danny McCray, Will Allen and Sterling Moore are all extremely expendable. Not saying we should and I'm about 95% sure we won't sign Woodson, but we certainly have the roster spot for him if we did some how get him.

Cowboys just signed Will Allen, and I doubt they are cutting him before camp starts. McCray is their best special teams player. And Woodson isn't starting ahead of Church, Johnson or Will Allen because the Cowboys obviously want to see what those 3 have. Hey, if Cowboys want to go 1 player short on another position other than CB/S, fine.

The issue is money if Woodson was willing to accept the vet minimum he would be on a roster already just like Freeney, Abraham, etc...

And they can easily go into camp with all of them. No need to cut anybody before camp. Remember when we signed Brodney Pool and he was going to be a key contributer??? How'd that work out? Will Allen is a career backup for a reason, he's extremely replaceable.

And get outta here with McCray and his special teams magic. Those players are a dime a dozen. JJ Wilcox can step in and fill that role easily as a rookie.

lol, now special teams isn't a high priority. What magic weed are you smokin? I'll take the special teams coach over what you percieve.

As I said, if you think McCray's special teams contribution is greater than the contribution that Woodson would have as an every down starter, you can take this route.

Also, who cares if they just signed Will Allen? They didn't give him hardly anything so cutting him wouldn't be a problem.

That's a horrible perspective to have on their part then. If you could get a guy dirt cheap who has experience and can play, you'd be a fool to just roll the dice with a bunch of guys who haven't shown anything.

Woodson would start over everyone. Even in his worn down state he's better than any of the guys they have.

Church is the only one that I even have an ounce of confidence in and that's because he did alright last year in limited action.

I have zero expectations for Will Allen. He was basically benched under Kiffin in Tampa and then spent the next 6 years being a limited action type of guy before seeing real playing time last year. He's been a career backup and he's 30. The only reason I even have any interest is because he is familiar with the system.......presumably. Charles Woodson played half the season last year and came away with an interception. Allen hasn't had an INT in over 7 years. Aside from filling in last year, the last time Will Allen had extensive playing time Roy Williams was still a good safety in the NFL.

Matt Johnson hasn't even played a down in the NFL, let alone been healthy enough to even practice on a consistent basis. I want to see what he can do but until he actually gets on the field there's no way anyone can point to him as a reason why another guy shouldn't be brought in.

Neither Will Allen or Matt Johnson should be reasons why a better safety shouldn't be brought in if the guy is dirt cheap and has a history of being a playmaker.

The reality is the team could sign Woodson and see what those other guys have. Training camp and preseason gives every team that sort of flexibility. You get tons of extra roster spots so you can evaluate who can play and who cannot.

There isn't a single player on the roster that makes a decent case against kicking the tires on Charles Woodson and seeing if he has anything left in the tank. They have 75 guys on the roster right now according to DC.com. Even if they had to cut one of them right now, I'd be hard pressed to believe they can't identify at least one of those guys who is expendable. If that's the case, the team is worse off than any of us know.
