Marinelli and Garrett always cited player flex crap. and IMO ruined some careers.
However it seems Quinn knows how to use them much better than Rod. Or it could be they actually now have a few players that they really can move around.

Yes, Quinn runs a multi-front defense.

Marinelli liked to rotate DL on a per series basis instead of per down basis.
- That ended up with players being exposed when they were in the wrong situation.
- i.e. Tyrone Crawford at DT on 3rd and 1.

The peak of Marinelli's inept coaching and scheme was the 2018 season playoff game vs the Rams.
- Marinelli's scheme had no answer to the the Rams unique version of the Zone Blocking Scheme.
- Even if they could have added a half-dozen All Pros to that defense, they still would have been gashed by the Rams running scheme.

Meanwhile, Belichick in the Super Bowl, made a simple adjustment to his scheme and it stymied the Rams precision run blocking scheme.
- Belichick was running a base 4-3 and 4-2-5 Nickel that year.
- The Cowboys could have made a similar adjustment in their 4-3 / 4-2-5 scheme.
- Instead of a scheme adjustment, Marinelli's adjustment was to have the LBs start cheating to one side in anticipation of what the Rams were doing.
- That just made it worse.

i hope it works out with Golston.

- I get the vibe that his top potential is Tyrone Crawford, a more rotational type "betweener" and that's not exactly what i'd like from a 3rd round pick.
But my biggest hope is he becomes as close to Michael Bennett as possible. A versatile betweener who can bounce and spot at both edge outside and
inside interior in a pinch and occasions.

- Not physically overpowering or athletically explosive, but maybe one that is so adept with using his hands, leverage added with tenacity, that he has a knack
making plays and penetration vs run or pass, despite his physical limitations.

- He missed all of the summer with injuries, and into very early part of the reg season, so it may have taken him that much more to get going, plus he's a rookie,
trying to adjust not only to NFL trenches, but also learning Quinns scheme and system.

- Like Osa, i thought Chauncey also hit a rookie wall the latter part of the season- a strong offseason and camp should help those matters.
I'll await to see how he works and operates at his best - once the pads, hitting and games played proceed.

I don't k now he is a 2nd year player who missed time in training camp with injury. He has had an off season to get himself ready and now he has a chance to go out and prove it on the field. I hate trying to compare 1 player vs another, what is his potential who knows we will judge him by his own play

He'll be happy (and lucky) to be embracing any role on this team. He's a fringe player who is in a fight to be one of the (most likely only) 10 D-lineman they keep. The spots are filling up quickly and he needs to fight like he's 3rd in line for the arc and it's starting to rain. There are already at least 8 spots locked in and he isn't one of them:
Dlaw, Gallimore, Odiggy, Fowler, Armstrong, Ridgeway, Watkins, Williams

Basham, Hill, Bohanna and Golston are fighting for the last 2 spots.

We’re not cutting our 3rd round pick from last year yet he’s been hurt. The DC picked him. I don’t think Watkins spot is secure at all. Also, I know DQ loves Fowler but he’s a potential surprise cut as well you would imagine. You think they keep Basham over him? Not sure I buy that either.

I'm more focused on who can go out and win the job. If that is Golston great if not then so be it but at the end of camp I hope to see the best making the final cuts.

I’d settle for a consistent defense. As good as they were in 2021, I think there were ups and downs. And the run defense needs to improve overall. If they can get that? Watch out!

Yeah I would too, and a year ago we were hoping for middle of the road, figuring the offense is what would carry the team. I've done a 180 there.

I do expect some nice things on defense. I have a gut feeling Sam Williams is noticed early. I expect improvement in some of our 2021 draftees....enough to make it a top 4-8 in the league threat on the whole.

Offense? Meh, for another day. Keep it positive for the holiday weekend lol. It's just shameful that when our defense finally arrives (assuming I'm right), the offense is most likely going to take a step back.

Watching his plays in slow motion using Tivo. It's one thing to think and another to acutally look it up. As a rotational player playing mostly on running downs he had 32 tackles, 4 QB hits, one pass defended, and a fumble recovery. Which defensive lineman drafted after him played better?

The run defense is not that important people are going crazy over that. San Francisco ran the ball well but barely scored. If we had one more offensive drive we win that game. Plus the ran the ball right at Gregory. It’s a passing league. Pass rush is more important.

I don't think Golston will be fighting for a spot, assuming he stays healthy.

The versatility he is showing and the work he put in putting on 20lbs with the offseason PB....that gets noticed. Guys like Hill and Basham are gone imo. Big Bo i think is on the team, at least I hope with Ridgeway.

- With Sam Williams replacing Gregory, it would be Fowler that might push Basham off the roster.

- His issue has been injuries, not lack of ability.
- He was the best interior DL in 2020 prior to going on IR.
- He was 1 of only 4 interior DL active for the playoff game (Bohanna was a healthy scratch).

For every great play that Hill makes penetrating into the backfield, you can find 5 where he gets absolutely smashed. I just don't like the player at all. It is easy to look good in shorts when you have quickness like he does....when the pads come on, that is when he gets pummeled. As it turns out, having Hill active for that 49er game over a guy like Bo was a huge mistake. Watch hill get pushed all over the field in that game and tell me Bo would have been pushed....

With Dlaw, Armstrong, Fowler, and Williams, that is good depth and investment in the DE position. I believe, knowing how the cowboys operate, they will value a guy like Golston who has position flex and that they drafted over a one-dimensional, unremarkable Basham. He will be a late cut barring injuries at the position, imo.

They scored 7 points in the second half because of Dak’s interception. We held up well against their run. We gave the offense two chances to win even with Gregory’s idiotic holding penalty.

And we drafted a thug for the interior like all of us wanted in Ridgeway. Just imagine what he will be when he gets his man body in 2 years from now. He will be very scary. As it stands, he will push for playing time year one barring injury. Big Bohanna also looks great I hear. He is leaner but added muscle I hear. Camp will be interesting at Oxnard.
