Clarification on Wade's "Get your ring finger ready" comment...

If this was for the Coaches' clinic, I was there.

Wade pretty much said it to shut up the guy who kept yelling it. I really don't think he was being cocky or anything. The guy just kept interrupting him initially.

The coaches were great. Reggie Herring was crazy (in a good way - i've got a really good feeling about our LB corp next year). Someone asked Brian Stewart, "are we gonna beat the Commanders", and Stewart answered it in a very businessman-like way.

Jason Garrett was a really personable man. I'd really love to be coached by him.

Overall, our coaches seem prepared yet not cocky at all. They know of the expectations, and they are determined to succeed. That doesn't make them cocky.
Hey!! Nice observations about the clinic. Care to share anymore info. Details man, details!

Yes, and Matt Mosely is some sort of great journalist. I mean Matt McBriar was supposed to be cut back in '05 because Mosely could read lips and told McBriar in the locker room he was about to be cut. That's not good journalism, that's Skip Bayless.

Um, no.

Wade was just trying to appease a fanatic so the fanatic would shut up. A true, professional journalist would have reported this. In fact, I knew when the comment was reported that it was probably blown way out of proportion with glaring facts missing from the report. I wasn't there, and I'm not Kreskin either, but when you see how the local Dallas media operates when it comes to the Cowboys you pretty much take anything they say with a grain of salt.

There's plenty of people that see that as an arrogant comment. Be it Cowboys haters or Cowboys diehard fans. You and I don't see it as an arrogant comment because we sort of understand the type of person Wade is and speaking for myself, I know how the Dallas sports media generally sucks. But most people tend to take the media's word for it.

YAKUZA

So Wade doesn't know all this stuff already?

Wade is a newbie to the game of being an NFL coach and knowing that something he says can be taken out of context?

Do you think Tony Dungy does this? Bill Cowher? Andy Reid? Mike Holmgren? Tom Coughlin? Lovie Smith?

Gimme a break.

Wade is playing the same game as the reporters are and it's more of an indictment on Wade because he's already been thru something like this last season where he got annoyed that they were calling him 'Mr. Fix It' when it was him who first mentioned the name.

Wade needs to get off the 'oh golly gee gosh' BS sometimes when he's addressing the media because this is what happens.

If he wanted the clown to shut up then he should have said 'Hey moron, **** I am trying to make a speech here'. Not stand there and make a remark that can be taken out of context and ran with by the media.

Why on earth you put Lovie Smith in the same category as these other guys mystifies me. He is a god-awful coach who sounds like a broken record during interviews. The Bears organization was correct in having serious reservations about this guy after the SB, but they caved to media and fan pressure.

If the Bears win 6 games this year, I will be totally shocked.

And if he'd done that, the headline would've been "Wade Phillips pissed off by overenthusiastic fan" Or " Wade Phillips curses out heckler"

Sounds no-win to me. And if he'd said anything remotely censuring the guy, it would've been a much bigger to-do than it is. Right now. The Get ready comment is limited to one major daily, a local radio spot, and fan boards.

Wade curses out heckler/fan per your suggestion would've been round the clock sports news on every station in the country.

Context sir, context. This is the difference between good reporting and hyperbole reporting. (or as referred to around here as BSPN) It is nothing more than an cheap sorry attempt to rile people into paying attention to what your saying. If you are going to report what was said, at least put it in the correct context. Don't act like Wade made some great proclamation when that in fact didn't happen.

It's classless and tasteless, but thats what we have come to expect from Mac Engel and BSPN. It's disappointing that you condone it.

It's disappionting that you can't see this was a situation where Wade has to know better and not act like a doofus. Like I said in my other post, we would not be hearing this from many other NFL head coaches. They would know better than to say something silly like that which can then be taken out of context and used in an article.

Same situation that Newman found himself in when he made his 'deer in the headlights' comment about Roy. Everyone wants to back off what they said by using the easy excuse of 'it was taken out of context'.

Are we living in 2008 or in 1978? Everyone knows the game.

Spoken like a true New Yorker. ;)

I don't think that's the way they do it down in Port Neches... Which isn't a bad thing.

Really, this isn't an indictment of Wade. It's an indictment of a few media members who are trying to stir up controversy where none exists.

Or anywhere by anyone who wants to maintain good relations with his/her audience/fan base.

LOL. Right over you head huh?

Didn't he just coach in a Super Bowl recently?

Please. It was an idiotic comment and that's all there is to it -- you're just biased. Wade has done nothing yet, NOTHING. I have serious reservations about the way he runs camps. Last year's team still had carryover toughness from Parcells', but that stuff disappears quickly.

Talking ain't going to get this done and everybody is already blowing smoke up the Cowboys' *****. And then I've got to read some shyt from one of our players about the playoff loss last year, how they "were caught by surprise" or some pathetic shyt like that?

So far, a Wade-run Cowboys team has done nothing but come up with excuses, so I'm not going to defend the guy's ridiculous comments.

Why does everyone around here take everything so literally? LOL.

Of course Wade isn't going to curse at the guy, but he could have told him politely to hush up.

Better yet, why wasn't anyone else around the guy telling him to ****. If I was there I surely would have.

By the way I have to take back that comment about Mosley being there, he wasn't in attendance.

Did you get the impression I was not aware of that after reading my third sentence?

If you think Lovie Smith is a great, or even good, coach -- well, you're as ignorant as those in the Bears offices who thought giving this guy a long-term extension was a good idea. I will guarantee he gets fired before the Bears sniff another playoff game. Guaranteed. The Bears will be one of the five worst teams in the entire conference this year, bank on it.

So you wanted Engel to print the entire speech in his article?

Then also print the comments of everyone in the room surrounding Wade as he was talking.

That's not feasible.

Maybe not, but Mac's article implied that he was making a statement rather than a silly statement made in jest. Kind of like if someone won't stop calling you an idiot, and you finally say, "yeah, yeah, I'm an idiot". You don't actually think that you are an idiot, you are just saying it to shut the guy up by acknowledging him. If you were to state, "hey everyone, I'm an idiot" out of the blue, then that would be a whole 'nother story.

I like Mac personally, but he still should have stated things the way they were, and not the way he wanted it to sound.

Some football coach (for a high school or middle school) who apparently was also a fan.

I don't know why nobody else told him to hush up (but he was yelling this before Wade was speaking and a little bit while Wade was speaking). I guess people didn't want to yell at someone across the room to shut up (which would have stirred up even more trouble).

How would you suggest Wade deal with this? Anything said in an angry way would've caused the media to go, "Wade is a jerk!" He said "get your finger ready" and then went on to say something along the lines of "You know, for our team, this year, the expectations are to win a Super Bowl. We need to reach those expectations. Last year we had a good season. This year, we hope to have a great season. Some teams think of such high goals as too lofty, but we don't want to collapse under the pressure. We odn't have the ability to come out of nowhere and surprise folks, but at least we're considered as one of the best instead of one of the worst."

Did Engel include that?
