I always put the asterisk in their name as a reminder that their Superbowls come with an asterisk because of the strike-shortened seasons. I think it's become a habit for a few of us, but I can't speak for anybody else's reasoning.

There is nothing wrong with the word. I can't believe it's being censored here. It's the name of the team, for crying out loud.

I sit at a bar most Sundays and talk to a Piscataway Indian wearing some type of Washington Commanders shirt... I'm pretty sure he's not offended.
Also shoot pool twice a week with a Cherokee Indian who loves his Commanders football.... so I call BS on the offensive word stuff.

WASHINGTON -- It's been a rough offseason for the Washington Commanders, and not just because of the knee injury to star quarterback Robert Griffin III.
The team's nickname has faced a new barrage of criticism for being offensive to Native Americans. Local leaders and pundits have called for a name change. Opponents have launched a legal challenge intended to deny the team federal trademark protection. A bill introduced in Congress in March would do the same, though it appears unlikely to pass.

But a new Associated Press-GfK poll shows that nationally, "Commanders" still enjoys widespread support. Nearly four in five Americans don't think the team should change its name, the survey found. Only 11 percent think it should be changed, while 8 percent weren't sure and 2 percent didn't answer.

This thread isn't about the Sk*ns' name. It's about their lack of class when it comes to the history of the rivalry. The *'s are to question the validity of your past Superbowls, two of which are tarnished for obvious reasons.

The name Redsk*ns was never considered racist until all this PC bull**** now. Redsk*n was actually considered honorable and brave. But you know the media.

This couldn't be more wrong. Regardless of the word's origin, it has been considered a racist and derogatory term since the 1960's. Before then it was becoming more and more derogatory starting as far back as 1875, as literary studies of the word have shown. By the time it was chosen for the team name it was certainly viewed by many as a negative term and let's not forget that the man that chose the name was a known and unashamed racist who refused to sign black players until the league forced him to and who set up a foundation with explicit rules that no funds ever be put towards anything or anyone that didn't believe in segregation. I don't think it's a coincidence that that man chose an increasingly negative name for Native Americans. To me, it doesn't matter what a word meant 100's of years ago. It matters what it means now and the term is now soo widely viewed as racists that it hasn't been used in everyday conversations in nearly 50 years and every dictionary that chooses to define it proclaims it to be racist and derogatory. Why would anyone want to be associated with a word that has become racist?

Come on dude, that is only two people you have interacted with and they don't speak for all Natives Americans. If majority of Native Americans feels that word is offensive than it is, if not then it isn't.
