I don't think anyone would argue that. I also think you have to see more than just good individual performances. You have to start establishing yourself as a unit.

You can't get gashed against the pass all pre-season and expect anything to change once the regular season begins.

That same roster beat only one team with a winning record that 13-3 year. That was fool's gold.

Ok. The team apparently thought coaching was part of the issue that season. But then the also flipped the roster fairly aggressively afterward, do it's a safe bet they thought talent had something to do with it.

The offense will be fine as long as Garrett keeps his hands off the playsheet. It should be one of the best Offenses in football.

I used to believe pre-season doesn't matter but if you don't establish a rhythm at some point it will carry over into the regular season and it will matter.


The year Wade Phillips got fired we were awful in the preseason and everyone kept saying how it didn't matter and we would just flip the switch.

Yep I knew we were going to be awful that year. You play that bad in the preseason, it will carry over to the regular season. Wins and losses don't matter but you have to at least see some good out there.

Too much dread is being automatically assigned to preseason yet again. Nothing seems different from regular season performance.

Well, that dread is understandable. Different results are wanted. However, different results are not an impossibility until the actual season is played.

So, another season is about the start. If different results do not happen, it's "See? That's what I've been saying all along." If different results do happen, it will be as if the spirit of Jerry Jones possessed the conversational skills for some folks:

"Ahh umm the defense *SMACK!* came on, uh, fantastically greater than *SNORT! KELLY CLARKSON!* we thought err, back, umm *SMACK!* in preseason... SON! Check out the ladies restroom! And umm..."

If one reads the unemotional game analyses, it's apparent no one appreciated the poor performance of the backups on defense. Even posts that run over a three-word, "The defense sucks" narrative clearly state or firmly infer just that.

It's called willful blindness. It's not that we lost a pre-season game, but the way we looked doing it. SD didn't throw an incomplete pass until what, the 4th quarter? And even then that didn't bother me because we signed two guys literally off the street. I was looking at the D line. It wasn't that they played bad, it's that they played horrifically bad. Some guys got pushed back so far off-line they should be listed in the next game program as a LB or safety since they spent more time in their areas of coverage.
