that's reaching

I would say Betts is better than mb III, but JJ is better than Betts. Both are injury prone but JJ has done more with his opportunities, with an inferior o-line than Betts.

Also, Portis is a much more consistent back than Jones, I don't know that he is a much better back than Jones.

You honestly can't be serious with a statement like that.

I concur, this is probably the most accurate post in this thread.

I think the real point here is that there is a bigger dropoff from Portis to Betts than their would be from JJ to Barber.

Betts is a quality backup, but he's never had to shoulder a full load in the NFL. Most backups see their YPG drop if they're thrust into a starting role because they wear down more than they did as a situational runner.

Prey tell why I can't be serious. I defy you to defeat the logic. Portis is much more consistent. From a talent standpoint, Portis is not much better than Julius.

What I want to know, is your basis for saying Jones isn't that far away from a top 5 back in talent. In Portis' worst season, he had 1,300+ yards on a very bad offense. I can only think of a handful of games that Jones has every shown the creativity, toughness, and elusiveness that Portis does on a weekly basis.

I think that's what he's saying. Jones has shown us with his 198 (etc) yards rushing in some games that he can play, he just can't show it to us week in and week out.

Portis, on the other hand, does just that.

Jones on his best day (198) is just as good as Portis on HIS best day. Jones' "best day" just doesn't come around nearly as often as Portis'.

having a d-lineman roll up on your ankle and a tackle that drove JJ's shoulder into the ground is NOT a good definition of injury prone!

Thank for summing this up. I agree 100%. Jones is just as good as Portis on his best day, he just is not nearly as consistent as Portis.

I don't know about first downs, but Barber had the same amount touchdowns as Betts has had in his career. Not way more. Also, in comparing backups it's probably better to think about the quality of each rusher's carries instead of generalizing the numbers. Barber carried the ball more last season than Betts has in any season of his career.

So..
BETTS... 4 years to score 5 TD's.
BARBER... 1 year to score 5 TD's.
Statistically... Betts scores a TD every 64 carries... Barber scores a TD every 27 carries.
What point in favor of Betts are trying to make with this stat?

Barber having more TD's and First Downs would indicate that he had more QUALITY CARRIES than Betts.

Barber having more carries is only really relevant in terms of total yardage in this situation because they both average about the same yards per carry, but Barber is proportionally better with his carries in generating Touchdowns.

you're forgetting one KEY point in this discussion that even a Commander fan would agree with...... our O-line sucked bad last year! Search the archives and you will see. That alone tells me that Barber is equal to or BETTER than Betts!;)

HAHA.. great point.. I was just sticking to the OBVIOUS stuff that it seems the Commanders fans seem to be overlooking.

What they won't admit is they are royaly screwed if that shoulder keeps popping out, and it probably will. Betts will not take them far as a starter and the "Rock" has averaged 2 carries a game in 5 years. If Portis's shoulder is damaged, their ship is sunk. They already lost one RB for the year.

If the Commanders have to start Betts for 15 weeks, is Al Saunders concerned? If Dallas has to start Barber for 15 weeks, how concerned are the Cowboys? Those two concerns are not equal in my mind. JMO

Also, Portis is a much more consistent back than Jones, I don't know that he is a much better back than Jones.

With all due respect, use common sense.

Why would Saunders be more worried than our coaches?

Portis is a top five back....so naturally he's going to be missed more.

There's not nearly the same gap between Barber and Jones.

Again, I think we underestimate Betts. He's an effective player when given opportunities.

Guys, please, PLEASE, don't gloat and shove these injuries down the Commanders' fans throats. First of all, it's bad sportsmanship, and second, the Commanders fans did this same thing to us a week or so ago. Now look what happened to them.

What goes around comes around.

I think Portis will be back for our game. It's a rivalry game.

Really, Portis hasn't really hurt us much as a member of the Commanders.

With all due respect Biz, prove that Betts is an effective player. Give me something that supports this. Again, if Betts is so effective, why would Al Saunders be worried?
