Ive been glued to this story... This is crazy.

Almost 8000 people watching the web feed on that blog
I'm listening to the blog and watching CNN. Looks like they're recapping the previous news conference.

Good Lord man. Most things have exceptions or aren't bullet proof. Put on an adult Coast Guard approved life jacket and there are few instances where the head is not held out of the water when put on properly. You can hardly float any other way in one.

Did you even read the link? Their are different types of "CG approved" pfd's.

Some CG approved pfd's meet the requirements to use on a boat but will not hold you up. I've got a shed full of pfd's right now and I've used so many different types over the years I feel fully confident in saying that the vast majority of type 1 and 2 pfd's used by the vast majority of recreational boaters meet the CG's requirements but will not keep an unresponsive persons head back and out of the water. Most do not claim they can.

I will also say that most type 3's will fail to do this also and that if you are rolling around in 8 footers while unconscious there are very few if any pfd's that will keep you from being drowned.

Try it sometime.

Im also doing the same thing :)

Well, I am incouraged by the fact that the one survivor did not appear to be too badly off. His color was not indicative of type 2 or 3 stage of Hypothermia. Now, I am not certain how long he has been treated but it didn't look too bad. Bringing somebody back from this condition is a slow methodical process. Hard to really tell from the pictures but he didn't look too blue so that's really a good sign. Of course, we don't know if he was able to get out of the water or not and it stands to reason that he would have expended less energy so by default kept more heat in his body but still, it was encouraging.

I hope they recover all of them safely

once that happens, I am REALLY looking forward to hearing their story

You can't use a three on a boat at sea. And of course you can drown with one on. It keeps you afloat and from going under the sea. The sea can surely go over you. Thankfully a person can ride out most waves but if you're unconscious then it isn't drown proof for sure. Not even a BC is drown proof and you can ride very high in one.

I doubt you've ever been in seas 8 feet. If so then you'd know better. Besides this isn't a whizzing contest between you and me. It's about those men in the water.

One man found alive according to MSN. Not one of the players though.

ooopppsss didn't see the sticky.

What source was reporting that the second person was found? I cant find the story anywhere?

The local news channel 10 had one of the reporters report it then the anchor said it was confirmed. A couple of minutes later the Coast Guard said they could not confirm it. It all happened within five minutes or so.

Yeah, I'm not sure whether to change the thread title or not. I'm thinking they found someone.

The why are you making it one. You made an false statment that may lead someone to believe they are safer then they are. I just set the record straight.

Bottom line is, very few pfd's will keep an unconsious person safe from drowning in any but the best conditions. That's a fact.

And yes, I've been in 8 footers plus more then once.

I wouldn't change the title.
Nobody is reporting anymore that two were located.

If what I am hearing is true, 14 -15 foot seas by Sunday, these guys could be anywhere. I seriously doubt they are alive. It would depend on if they were in fact in rough seas and for how long but that is a great deal of expended energy to survive. If it was that way for most of the day and night on Sunday, I doubt there is any chance. If they are not already out of the water, I think you have to prepare for the worst here.

I'm sorry.
