One of our friends said that Cooper's agent is on the radio denying that he has been found.

The why are you making it one. You made an false statment that may lead someone to believe they are safer then they are. I just set the record straight.

Bottom line is, very few pfd's will keep an unconsious person safe from drowning in any but the best conditions. That's a fact.

And yes, I've been in 8 footers plus more then once.

I never said it kept them from drowning. My last post. This is about those guys still in the water not about life vests.

Coast Guard said that Schuyler was found on top of the boat. Or the top of the bottom. That could explain his relatively good condition.

I still don't get why any one would take such a small single engine craft that far off shore.

REPORT OF COOPER’S DISCOVERY IS WITHDRAWN

Posted by Mike Florio on March 2, 2009, 3:23 p.m.

Without even so much as an apology or an “our bad,” Tampa 10 has withdrawn its report that Raiders linebacker Marquis Cooper has been found.

We regret to say that we’ve got some experience regarding getting it wrong when it comes to matters of life and death, and the one thing that you’ve got to do when you make a mistake like that is apologize profusely and profoundly for the error.

The search continues for Marquis Cooper, Corey Smith, and William Bleakley. Our prayers remain with them and their families.

yep.
He was in the right spot - hanging on to the motor on top.

He was conscious and said all were wearing life jackets. There is still hope.

He's probably dehydrated, suffering from exposure. Even if the majority of his time has been spent sitting on top of that boat, holding on, he's been in the water for 2 days or better. He's probably just spent and I can't imagine he's gotten a whole bunch of sleep. I'd imagine his body has probably just shut down. As I mentioned earlier, if there is hypothermia going on, it is a process to bring a body back. He won't be able to have rational discussion for some time, I'd think.

He last saw them at 2am this morning. They also said the boat was anchored when it flipped over.

Update, 3:21 p.m. ET: Capt. Timothy Close said his officers have spoken with Nick Schuyler at the hospital, and much of what they learn from him will affect the search for the other three men. He said the search team is using computer models to estimate where the missing men may have drifted to, but that Schuyler's input will help the search. He could not confirm Ray Sanchez's statement that the missing boaters were together after the boat flipped on Saturday.

My thoughts and prayers go out to them.

I don't want to sound insensitive, but would being a football player help or hinder in this type of situation? Would higher/lower body fat affect your ability to stay warm in these situations? Would having more muscle and shivering affect anything? How is an athletes circulatory system compared to others? Would their weight, body fat, etc. affect their ability to float with the life vests?

Could have been a roage wave. Weather can come up on you very quickly. I've seen it happen. If that were the case, it probably doesn't matter if your in a 50 footer or even larger. The size of the craft was not ideal but the problem, sounds to me, as if they didn't heed maritime weather reports. Sounds as if they expected calm seas for most of Saturday with weather blowing in on Sunday.

Surface area has more to do with it than anything comparing human to human. It's not insensitive just curious as long as you keep in mind those 3 people and their families.

It would affect it but the affect would be more a point of body mass and how heat disapates according to size. In salt water, a larger body mass actually helps if you are floating but a larger body mass is harder to maintain in rough Sea because it takes more energy to maintain. More energy out means less heat in.

At this point, I honestly don't believe it matters much. The discussion is probably mute. Seems harsh to say, I know, but it's probably very unlikely at this point.

Sunset is probably around 6 PM local so search will have to continue using night vision.

Hope for the best.

can anyone give insight as to how a search is conducted typically?

I mean I'm sure it's more than just a row of guys holding hands and walking in lines looking 10 feet in front of them

just curious to know

The more pertinant question would be, how do you search after having been in the water for over 48 hours. It will now become an excercise in modeling. The Costies will use sophisticated weather/tide modeling programs to extrapolate probable drift patterns and then search in those areas. With failing light, it will be much more difficult.
