It will fluctuate especially the surface temperature but not by much. The specific heat of water is extremely high.

Lots of factors are involved in temperature variations from day to night. How deep does the water run in the location you are in, for example. The deeper the water, the colder the water and the more varied the thermal layers. The Ocean bleeds off heat depending on depths and currents. Also, wind velocity plays a role but even a few degrees difference has a very dramatic effect on the human body when submerged for a period of 7 to 10 hours. It has to do with how rapidly the bodies internal heat loss works, when submerged. Essentially, it accelerates and so, the effects of Hypothermia are even more pronounced. Lots of stuff goes into the whole thing but bottom line, if your not wearing skins and your just floating free, it's not a good situation to be in.

some confusion. the news is reporting it but the family advises they have not heard anything from the coast guard. Hope this is not like mining incident a few years ago.

If they have life vests on then they are Coast Guard approved. Those do have keep your head out of the water even if unconscious. That small of a boat would have had life vests but not a raft most likely. Those are expensive and fairly large and not often carried by a boat that small. Boats that size get out 20-50 miles all the time in good seas. In the Gulf that's deep blue water.

You can stay alive indefinitely in water 70+ degrees. I'm not used to water that far south so I can't say they would or wouldn't get hypothermic as typically blue water in the Gulfstream is significantly warmer than coastal waters. I have no idea how far out they are. They have a decent chance of being found alive if they have proper vests on. Let's hope so.

Not true. They do have to be CG approved but being CG approved doesn't mean they will keep your head up.

conjecture by the news is that they won't confirm it until they notify family.

Good Lord man. Most things have exceptions or aren't bullet proof. Put on an adult Coast Guard approved life jacket and there are few instances where the head is not held out of the water when put on properly. You can hardly float any other way in one.
