First off, Cassel has been with Chiefs, Vikings, and Bills since leaving the Chiefs. The Vikings didn't fight to keep Cassel after the 2014 season. Then Cassel had trouble beating out both Manuel and Taylor in Buffalo.

The only good option that was out there right now is Flynn. He at least can drive the ball down field and keep you in games.

The counter to that is if Flynn was so good why was he home and Cassel on an nfl team
I like Flynn but think Cassel is a better option
opinions on player always vary but I trust the front office more than my opinion and they felt Cassel was a better option
Kinda hard to not trust the guys who have built this team the last few years and brought in guys during the season the last couple years who contributed very well

What games were you watching? Flynn was horrible. Yes he torched us in the second half of our game, but that was an all time awful Cowboys defense. Not impressed. That got destroyed by Detroit on Thanksgiving. Couldn't beat a mediocre Pittsburgh team. Lost to the Bears. Only beat them when Rodgers returned. If he doesn't they don't make the playoffs.

I'll take the guy who's actually been to the playoffs and was the full time starter.

What are you talking about? He didn't lose to the Bears, he didn't play them. Rodgers did in the final week. Flynn was horrible? 4 TDs, 1 INT, for 299 yards is...awful? He also played well against Minnesota and Atlanta.

So, basically, for you to be impressed he had to win every single game that he started? You're gong to be disappointed in Weeden and Cassel then.

Would have rather just went with Moore as the backup, but I won't lose any sleep over this. Not gonna argue over the castoff backup qb for the next 8 weeks who hopefully won't see the field. The coaching staff can pick their poise.

Yet and still they only won two games in Rodgers absence. Of course you're not expecting him to win every game, but considering a relatively soft schedule to only win two games in Rodgers absence is pretty pathetic. If Flynn is so good why is it he keeps getting cut? Because he sucks. He torched the Cowboys. A GOD AWFUL defense.

Cassel is absolutely no better than either Flynn or Ponder. His best year came in 08, we all know that was the Patriots system. You then had 2010, he didn't do anything in 2010 - you had Jamaal Charles who rushed for 1,400 yards and Thomas Jones who rushed for nearly 1,000 himself. The star of that team was the rushing attack along with a solid defense.

There's a very real possibility that Weeden stinks it up and this guy gets playing time. I get backup QBs won't lead you to the Super Bowl, but this guy won't even keep you in games. He's awful.

Speaking of systems, how has Flynn done when he played anywhere but Green Bay? How long did he play well for? A few games. Cassel has played well in two systems, NE and KC, and serviceable in another for an extended period of time. Don't talk bad about Cassel having Charles carry the team when your other QB, Ponder, was carried by Adrian Peterson. You're just looking for something to complain about.

It seems like insurance against further injury. Lastyear the Cardinals were still pretty good after Palmer went out. It was when his backup got injured that the downward spiral went into effect.

matt was the starter for most of 2013 for the vikings and started 2014 until he got injured.

in 2013 he managed a 82 passer rating. Aikman won 3 rings with a low 80 passer rating.

Not crazy about losing a 5th rounder, but a good move nevertheless. There's gonna be a lot of moaning and groaning come draft time in '17 but Cassel seems to be a better short term solution to back up than Weeden. Hopefully Weeden makes me eat crow on that statement. Cassel is 33 so he can hang around for a couple years.

Ponder isn't "my other QB" - I don't like Ponder.
