A lot of guys ended up starting along both sides of the line by default mainly due to injury or $. Free has been getting abused more and more these days, some say he sucks, others say he's serviceable.
On a scale of 1-5 where does he rank on this line?
Martin
Smith
T-Fred
Leary/Collins
Free
Feel free to switch it up.
Where he ranks is irrelevant to whether the staff starts him or another. The question is who are the capable starters at RT and who does the staff want to play from that list.
I've never been a huge Free fan although I have taken to pointing out his actual level of play vs the mythical perception by some here. And I've always said he wasn't so good he couldn't be replaced.
I'm my impression he's played well enough the staff has looked at other positions to improve whether from desire or necessity. I think Green might have challenged him more this year had he stayed healthy. So, IMO, Free has been fortunate no one came along to easily replace him. OTOH, he's played well enough prior to this year to make that not an easy task.
My guess is they will have some competition for him this year assuming he's even on the roster. I'd say right now that's better than 50/50. The offseason moves will say more then the draft.
How many sacks did we give up last year? How many did Free give up looking at multiple reporting agencies? What's the average number of sacks given up by the 'average' NFL RT last year? Have you looked at all his play using game film and the All 22? If you find him average do you hold him to the level of play of an All Pro colleague on the team or just between RTs around the league? If you hold him to the same level of play as an All Pro around him why do you do so? Should you compare him to RTs around the league as well as RTs on the team in justifying any decisions regarding his play?
