Leary didn't come into his own until his 3rd year; it was not certain what we had in him after 2013. Collins has been much better in his first year than Leary was in his second.

Excellent point. Leary was actually a practice squad guy who only got elevated to the active roster once other teams began to show interest. And even then he didn't play a snap until the year after.

I said sacks and pressures but even if you put JPP above Crawford, you still only have 3 guys in front of him. There are 15 teams running the 4-3.

I haven't spent a whole lot of time on it, but the Eagles' Brandon Graham comes to mind too. That would be the guy who stole Doug Free's lunch money in week 17. And that just in-division. I think we could find quite a few more if we looked.

No one is saying he is a world beater but you are treating him like he is George Selvie out there.

George Selvie had 7 sacks for the Cowboys and they paid him peanuts. I'm not sure bringing up his name helps the case for Crawford.

And again, I'm not hating on the player, I'm hating the circumstances and the contract. A contract that grossly overpays him. And circumstances that ask a 3-4 DE to try to play defensive tackle and end in a 4-3, roles he just doesn't fit.

And not everyone said Collins can't be a RT. That's my entire point, nobody knows for sure anything until we see them play. Some will be right the rest will be wrong
It is unfortunate that they didn't give him some reps at RT in the 2016 training camp. At this point they have to make the decisions before they get to OTAs or training camp.

I'm sure they know if he can play there. Good thing is free agency is before the draft so they will know if they can resign Leary or not. If Leary isn't resigned then Collins or Cooper takes LG and Green, Collins, Cleary and possibly draft pick fights over RT

The topic has been beat to death. But no I don't see Collins at RT but I wouldn't rule it out......yet.

Still disappointed they didn't just plug him in a RT the day we got him. Leary had those nagging groin injuries so we plug in Throatzilla Pancake Machine, run down the field and make key blocks stud, then dude gets hurt and Leary gets his job back after finally recovering.

Maybe he can't play tackle well enough.

They already had their mind made up on Free.

I doubt that. What people here forget in their agenda fog is that the coaches like Free. He's better than many think although his play did slip this year. I've always advocated he'll get replaced when they see the need for it AND have a player who can do a better job. It's remarkable how long he's kept his job when so many thought he sucked.

Maybe they were........

Well that's like your opinion, man. Free has declined and we have players that likely would have played better if not injured so he's there as veteran insurance. C-.

Probably plenty, but no one should be. He is the worst starter on the team. Not the offense, the team
Mixed feelings.

I'm fine with replacing Free with a first round pick. That would be awesome. My top priority would always be the OL.

I would be irritated that they had to use a first to replace Free when the could have done it a couple of years ago for an extra 1.4M per season. Can they just trade Romo to get JP back? ;)

It's pretty infuriating they stuck with Free over Jeremy Parnell.

It's not my opinion about most of it. To say he sucks and not accept the fact the staff played him all these years has to go with the assumption the staff is incompetent. I reject that assumption. And most reasonable people would.

I've posted on this site before stats to back up Free's play as well as discussing his drop off this year. Until this year he's done well compared to the his fellow tackles in the league.

If you want to say it's my opinion the staff knows what they're doing regarding playing Free then you have a small point. Most would just say thinking they do know what they're doing is common sense and an opinion is not truly necessary.

Despite the fact that the staff has already afforded La'el Collins some time at RT during camp, I can't help but wonder if their inclination to replace Doug Free might cause them to take another look at him this year. He seems a bit sluggish vs. the pass rush but we shall see if they decide to give him another chance there. I tend to think he'll most likely stay put at LG but if, by chance, he isn't allowed reps at RT, that'll be our clue.

What he didn't mention is that Bill Callahan, the OL coach who implemented this blocking scheme did not want Free as a starter. He tried to bench him and Garrett refused. That started the rift between Callahan and Garrett that resulted in Callahan leaving and going to the Skins.

A lot of guys ended up starting along both sides of the line by default mainly due to injury or $. Free has been getting abused more and more these days, some say he sucks, others say he's serviceable.

On a scale of 1-5 where does he rank on this line?

Martin
Smith
T-Fred
Leary/Collins
Free

Feel free to switch it up.

Where he ranks is irrelevant to whether the staff starts him or another. The question is who are the capable starters at RT and who does the staff want to play from that list.

I've never been a huge Free fan although I have taken to pointing out his actual level of play vs the mythical perception by some here. And I've always said he wasn't so good he couldn't be replaced.

I'm my impression he's played well enough the staff has looked at other positions to improve whether from desire or necessity. I think Green might have challenged him more this year had he stayed healthy. So, IMO, Free has been fortunate no one came along to easily replace him. OTOH, he's played well enough prior to this year to make that not an easy task.

My guess is they will have some competition for him this year assuming he's even on the roster. I'd say right now that's better than 50/50. The offseason moves will say more then the draft.

How many sacks did we give up last year? How many did Free give up looking at multiple reporting agencies? What's the average number of sacks given up by the 'average' NFL RT last year? Have you looked at all his play using game film and the All 22? If you find him average do you hold him to the level of play of an All Pro colleague on the team or just between RTs around the league? If you hold him to the same level of play as an All Pro around him why do you do so? Should you compare him to RTs around the league as well as RTs on the team in justifying any decisions regarding his play?
