Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Breaks Box Office Record It Should Never Have Been Able To

From the start, Marvel’s Black Panther movies have broken records and changed the face of superhero movies. Now, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has been shattering another major milestone when it comes to female-led movies in the genre. According to the latest box office volumes, the MCU movie has become the highest grossing female-led superhero movie domestically, leaping past Captain Marvel, Wonder Woman and Black Widow to take the crown.

Following the death of Chadwick Boseman, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever had to undergo a lot of changes to its script in order to address the death of both the actor, and in unison, his on-screen character of T’Challa. This included the Black Panther sequel losing its male lead, and replacing him with Letitia Wright’s Shuri, who appears alongside Angela Bassett, Danai Gurira and Lupita Nyong’o as the movie’s central character. By this change, the film’s success has seen it break a record that under other circumstances it would not have even been in contention to challenge.

The latest figures from Box Office Mojo put Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’s domestic gross at $431.5 million, which is just enough to topple Captain Marvel with its $426.8 million, and shuffle Wonder Woman ($412.8 million) and Black Widow (a pandemic impacted $183.65 million). It is unlikely that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will manage to overtake the pre-<censored> worldwide gross of Captain Marvel, but with so many contributing factors such as post-<censored> audience volumes and certain countries not releasing the movie, the box office achievement is still something to be celebrated.

Mmm. but is there a Catch 22 with this female led genre movie blockbuster.per Shuri's Black Panther ?
was it about Letitia Wright’s Shuri character that most were urging to see ? ....
... or the black panther costume suit of armor and it's power of abilities as it springs into action, that most were urging to see ?

How much curiousity sensation was how the Black Panther franchise were prepared to move on and present itself without the late star Chadwick Bosman.
as well as introduce Wakanda enemy Namor the Submariner ?

i don't quite see Shuri as a " stand alone" female such as WW or Capt. Marvel (and we know why Capt Marvel did so well off wings of Thanos/Infinity/ End Game, right ?) ..or Black Widow,... but that's just me and how i'm wondering about it.

Regardless, i salute the box office success of Black Panther, .as i admit that i wonder how they could continue to pull off the sensational attraction of the Black Panther without Bosman.

lol at Joel Scott listing Supergirl as low as number six. Captain Marvel is a glaring omission from his list. Your list includes another superhero, the Invisible Woman, who Scott omitted as well.

I did like him slotting Raven at number three. Rachel Roth is often underrated or missing on these types of lists.

In my opinion, he should have aimed at a list numbering 20 or 25 instead of 10 only. It would be interesting to me seeing where Carol Danvers would squeeze in for him, lol.

- i admit that i'm still naive when it comes to both Raven and Zatanna in DC Comics. My only knowledge and experience from them as been appearances in Justice League Dark series
and Nicktoons/FX Justice League Unlimited

- Between Super Girl and " Power Girl " .. maybe its' me, but i admit that i've never been interested in them to know or realize how powerful they could be.

You will never read of me mentioning Carol Danvers as Ms. Marvel. Kamala Khan has been Ms. Marvel since 2013.

Monica Rambeau was named Captain Marvel before Carol Danvers by nearly 30 years. That said, I have never considered her as Mar-Vell's successor since her powers were not Kree based like his. The comics and movies do not mesh well on Danvers' power origins also but hers is more Mar-Vell like than Rambeau. For these reasons, I identify Danvers as Captain Marvel.

Personally, I consider Zatanna as Doctor Fate-lite. She is a powerful sorceress but do not think her power level is extreme.

Raven is the product of Trigon, who the article's author appropriately associates as powerful as DC heavy hitters like Darkseid and the Anti-Monitor. Nothing I have seen produced for television adequately demonstrates just how powerful Raven really is. Maybe the animated movie (I do not recall the name right now) where the Justice League challenges Darkseid on Apokolips is a relatively tame example.

The character was introduced when DC (finally!) revamped the Teen Titans for a brand new book title of the same name back in the 1990's. That's where I would recommend anyone to start as far as discovering who she is and her power levels. One thing is certain. The goofy cartoon incarnation of her, like in Teen Titans Go!, are a complete joke.

Not sure how they have transitioned Power Girl (Kara Zor-L) in comics over the past few decades since I stopped collecting them full-time. She was from the Earth 2 parallel universe, along with the Justice Society of America, etc. She is Kryptonian but that universe's Krypton did not produce superheroes quite as powerful as DC's Earth-1 universe.

Maybe this will help better understand Power Girl's Earth-1 counterpart, Supergirl. Kara Zor-El is just as powerful as her cousin, Superman. In fact, her power levels may be a TAD more higher than his. If that does not help, our thread perhaps should finally have a deep discussion about just how powerful Superman really is for DC and/or across all comic book companies.

I agree with the change. In my opinion, the character should represent the sum total of the best humanity as a whole offers. That is funny though, given he is an orphan from a planet that once existed in a far away galaxy.

- Frankly, imo, I think it’s be made a mess of the Capt. Marvel name and identity from comics to the MCU version.
I’ve always thought the original Carol Danvers-Ms. Marvel was a complete rip off of the original Marvel version of Captain Mar-vell. Costume, Powers, minus the mega bands, star-flight rift.
I finally came to accept Danvers/Marvel more when they updated her costume to take away the Mar-vell look, maybe to make her exclusive.

- Maybe comics in general will do that with certain characters. ala Spider Woman to Spiderman.
And then comes Monica Rambeau as “ Capt Marvel’. What is with Marvel deciding to give her CM, instead of another identity name.
Eventually they came to their senses with “ Spectrum “.

suppressed his full powers to avoid hurting others.
Since Kara Zor-El is a Kryptonian with super man like powers, which are vastly varied, it would appear that she should be mention as
one of the more powerful females in the comics.

- From what an explanation I had read on Super Girl, she may have ‘ appeared’ to be more powerful than Superman, because Superman stated that he has subconsciously suppressed his full powers to avoid hurting others.

Subconsciously or consciously? I ask because Kal-El has always consciously controlled himself. There were examples of his superhuman self-aware restraint even in the movies like Superman: The Movie and Man of Steel. As far as video media is concerned, I believe DC summed up his never-ending predicament in the episode Destroyer--which was the series finale of Justice League Unlimited:



The animated movie, Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, is based on Earth-1's universe (I think)--which is DC's primary reality. I was tempted to post a clip from a Supergirl television series episode, which showed Supergirl beating Superman but her series is based on Earth-38 and definitely an alternate reality like the Arrowverse.

Getting back to S/B:A, Batman explains his rationale for why Kara may be stronger than Kal-El. I clipped the scene from HBO Max and uploaded it to YouTube. I couldn't find it already posted on YouTube. Why can't thousands and thousands of other people make this easy for me to post here?



Kal-El has the superior edge on Kara Zor-El in experience though.
