THE SHI 'AR IMPERIAL GUARDS

The-Shiar-Empire-Imperial-Guard-from-X-Men.jpg
It's funny. At first, I was going to post my assumption that any introduction of the Shi'ar and/or Shi'ar Imperial Guards hinged solely upon the X-Men's introduction into the MCU. That particular galactic empire first appeared in The Uncanny X-Men during the mid-1970's. Then I started thinking...

Both the Kree and Skrull empires have been referenced solidly in the movie MCU (e.g. Captain Marvel, Guardians of the Galaxy [Yondu] ) The Kree were showcased in varying degrees in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and The Inhumans also--although AOS was more loosely tied to the MCU than TI. Both empires were created in the early and late 1960's within the pages of the Fantastic Four, which has not been seen as the superhero group in the MCU yet.

So, my assumption for when the Imperial Guard might eventually see the light of day in the MCU could be entirely wrong. Heck. It would not surprise me if they popped up in Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 3 or The Marvels next year. Could be even sooner.

From Marvel's perspective? I say it is both. Go to Sylvie Laufeydottir's Marvel.com page:

https://www.marvel.com/characters/sylvie

It is the character from the Loki series with actress Sophia Di Martino's picture, etc. Now, click on the character's IN COMICS PROFILE link to the bottom left of Di Martino's picture:

https://www.marvel.com/characters/sylvie/in-comics/profile

It switches to Sylvie Lushton, a.k.a. Enchantress.

Marvel has linked the comics book bio of Sylvie Lushton/Enchantress with Sylvie Laufeydottir, who is a Loki variant, in the MCU. Essentially, they are both the same character now. ;)

I guess they're not going the route of Amara (The Enchantress) being romantically obsessed with Thor to the point of trying to eliminate her rivals for his affection.

Gotham Knights Trailer Introduces Batman's Family, Joker's Daughter - and Misha Collins' Harvey Dent
By Lee Freitag | CBR
May 31, 2022

The first full trailer for Gotham Knights, The CW's latest DC superhero series, has arrived.

The trailer begins with Oscar Morgan's Turner Hayes, the adopted son of Bruce Wayne/Batman, throwing a party at Wayne Manor. Misha Collins' Harvey Dent interrupts the gathering to inform Hayes that his father has been murdered. The Gotham City Police Department (GCPD) brings in several suspects for questioning, including the Joker's daughter and Hayes, the latter being accused of murdering his adopted father for the inheritance he would receive upon Wayne's death. The trailer concludes with Hayes and the rest of the suspects being freed from a GCPD armored van by Carrie Kelley/Robin with the young adults deciding to work together to solve Batman's murder and clear their names.

Getting His Own Marvel Comics Solo Series, Yoda Is
By Jeremy Smith | Slash Film
May 31, 2022

intro-1654034765.webp

Given "Star Wars" fans' insatiable appetite for side adventures that fill in narrative gaps for their favorite characters, Yoda, who expired at the longevous age of 900 in "Star Wars: Episode VI – The Return of the Jedi," certainly has more than enough time under his belt to keep writers in a variety of media busy for eons to come. Unsurprisingly, Lucasfilm has plans to mine the entirety of Yoda's existence for every last narrative morsel.

While The Force faithful lick their chops for the return of Grogu (aka Baby Yoda) in the forthcoming third season of "The Mandalorian" (currently set to hit Disney+ in February 2023), they'll be thrilled to learn that Marvel Comics has commissioned three creative teams to spin three separate story arcs detailing the elder Yoda's untold exploits. As announced at last weekend's Star Wars Celebration, the ten-issue limited series "Star Wars: Yoda" will find Luke Skywalker's mentor reflecting on his life during his post-prequel trilogy exile on Dagobah. "Star Wars Adventures" author Cavan Scott will team with illustrator Nico Leon on the first arc, which is set during the "Star Wars: The High Republic" era. The next two arcs -– to be written by Jody Houser and Marc Guggenheim, and drawn by Luke Ross and Alessandro Miracolo — will take place before the prequel trilogy and in the final days of the Clone Wars.

Disney+ Quietly Upgrades Netflix's Marvel Shows
By Andre Joseph | CBR
May 31, 2022

Marvels-The-Defenders.jpg

Disney+ just gave a quiet upgrade to all of the former Marvel Netflix shows.

According to The Direct, Disney+ gave a 4K Ultra HD and Dolby Vision upgrade to Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher and The Defenders. Each series is now displayed accurately as intended by the original television production teams. The jump in quality comes after viewers commented about the loss of picture quality compared to how the shows looked when they were streaming on Netflix. In response, Disney+ promised to deliver the upgrade as soon as possible. But it did not give a firm date as to when the upgrades would take place. Now it has happened without any advance notice.

When the announcement was made about the Marvel Netflix shows migrating to Disney+, questions were raised about whether or not the graphic content and foul language would remain intact on a family-friendly streaming platform. Disney+ installed a parental control feature in the U.S. for all subscribers. As mentioned in a Disney+ statement, "When opening Disney+ for the first time on or after March 16, all subscribers in the U.S. will be prompted to update their Parental Controls. This includes the option to select content rating restrictions for each profile as well as to add a PIN to lock profiles. Those that choose to keep their settings the same will continue to enjoy Disney+ as they always have within a TV-14 content rating environment, with the option to make changes at any time under Profile settings."

Interesting and unusual how Disney+ has handled these shows and their mature content. On one hand, they want to have the content available, but on the other, it’s kept rather quiet.

Marvel Studios Searching for "Big Name" Fantastic Four Director
By Cameron Bonomolo | ComicBook.com
June 2, 2022

The Marvel family is getting bigger. Marvel Studios is reportedly courting "big names" to direct the Fantastic Four reboot bringing the superhero family of Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, the Human Torch, and the Thing into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Kevin Feige announced Tom Holland's Spider-Man director Jon Watts would direct the reboot during Disney's Investor Day in December 2020, but Watts officially stepped away from the MCU in April. According to Deadline's Justin Kroll, Feige is considering an established filmmaker to helm Fantastic Four after recruiting Sony's Spider-Man trilogy director Sam Raimi to replace Scott Derrickson on Doctor Strange 2.

In a series of tweets, Kroll reported Fantastic Four is "easily Marvel's top [open directing assignment]," adding the studio is unlikely to fill the position "anytime soon as they are not even close to cutting down [the] long list of candidates."

Though a shortlist of directors has not surfaced from the "large mix of candidates," Feige is said to be "taking a lot of shots at some big names," according to the report. "One source close to process [says], 'Kevin doesn't want [to] oversee [the] entire shoot and after not having to worry about that with Raimi [on Doctor Strange 2], he is very game to [the] same outcome with this shoot."

Former Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada Exits After 22 Years
By Tamera Jones | Collider
June 1, 2022

joe-quesada-exits-marvel-social-featured.jpg

In a sentimental post on Twitter, Marvel writer and producer Joe Quesada turned in his "keys to the Universe" and wished his Marvel family a fond farewell. After two decades, Quesada informs fans that the time has come for him to officially move on from the colossal entertainment company in order to pursue a handful of his own projects, adding that he may still contribute to his Marvel family on occasion in the future. In true superhero fashion, Quesada soared from freelance artist to executive vice president and creative director of Marvel Entertainment.

Quesada began his Marvel journey at the heart of it all: as a fan. An avid comic book reader, he went on to become a freelance artist in 1990 for DC Comics and then Valiant Comics, dipping into all the major comic book publishers early on in his career. At DC, Quesada had a hand in co-creating both The Ray and Azrael for the miniseries Batman: Sword of Azrael. With Valiant, Quesada flourished, creating covers and interiors for comics like Ninjak, Solar, and Man of the Atom, among others. All this was before Marvel contacted him in 1998, contracting him to produce the Marvel Knights.

Thor: Love And Thunder’s Taika Waititi Reveals The Fun Way His Marvel Sequel Was Influenced By Romance Novels
By Corey Chichizola | Cinemablend
June 1, 2022

Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been a wild ride so far, with the franchise greatly expanding thanks to mind blowing projects on both the small and silver screens. The next installment is Thor: Love and Thunder, which marks the first time a hero was given a fourth solo movie. And director Taika Waititi recently revealed the fun way his Marvel sequel was influenced by romance novels.

The title for Thor: Love and Thunder hints that romance is going to be a major plot point, likely between Chris Hemsworth’s title character and Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster. And it turns out that the Oscar winning filmmaker actually took inspiration from classic romance novels for the upcoming Marvel movie. Waititi told Wired that there are visual nods to old Mills & Boon romance novel covers, which should make for a fascinating theatrical experience. Especially since both Hemsworth and Portman have the long, flowing locks to pull off these homages.

This tidbit of information from Taika Waititi should only help to buoy fan excitement for Thor: Love and Thunder. The Jojo Rabbit filmmaker is known for his unique point of view, and for putting his sense of humor and heart into

So to try to better understand this, Disney will continue their own version of Marvel series from the Netflix side, and bring back same character actors, but will only continue Marvel’s Daredevil, …
per Charlie Cox as DD/Murdock, Vincent D’Onofrio (aka Kingpin)

What about the other Marvel series as a Disney continuations ? The Punisher.. Luke Cage.. Jessie Jones and Iron Fist ? o_O

All previous Netflix series were above TV-14, which is Disney's preferred rating ceiling standard. My opinion?

They have been constantly researching how family based (with young children) subscribers are adjusting to the Netflix TV-MA programming and whether parental control options are being used 'optimally'. At the same time, they are storyboarding and testing scripts safe enough to copy the original set of series without jeopardizing their family-friendly streaming format long-term.

I think their plan is producing and releasing each series in sequence slowly. Thus, they can gauge reaction and adjust accordingly to negative feedback in real time without making public announcements about future programming. I can almost guarantee The Punisher will be the LAST revived series IF it does return.

Why The Boys' Chase Crawford Gets Social Media Hate From DC Comics Fans
By Jillian Fabiano | E News
June 2, 2022

Chace Crawford may be getting hate, but he's loving it.

Crawford stars as The Deep, a fish superhero in Prime Video's The Boys. His character, like the others in the show, hilariously parodies a well-known and beloved DC Comics superhero: Aquaman. Other parallels in The Boys supe universe include A-Train who resembles The Flash and Queen Maeve as Wonder Woman.

But a recent interview, the actor revealed that not everyone is a big fan of his imitation—including DC comics fans.

New Creepshow Comic Coming in September
By Cameron Bolton | MovieWeb
June 2, 2022

creepshow.jpg

Courtesy of Entertainment Weekly (EW), it has been discovered that Skybound is publishing a five-issue comic book anthology based on the Creepshow franchise. Creepshow and the world of comics have long since gone hand in hand. The film that launched the whole franchise, directed by George A. Romero and written by Stephen King (who stars in one of the segments), was inspired by the gruesome EC horror comics of the 1950s. According to makeup artist Greg Nicotero, the comics also served as inspiration while he oversaw the TV show, which is about to air its fourth season on Shudder.

"We're paying tribute to the horror comics of the '50s and '60s. These guys in the '50s were really pushing the envelope by creating these comic books that were just a little more violent, a little sexier, a little scarier than people could handle at the time, and they became controversial. But it was those comics that inspired Stephen King, that inspired George Romero," said Nicotero to EW in 2019.

The new comic series marks the second time that Creepshow has gone full circle, after the original 1982 film was adapted as a comic book, with the artwork done by Bernie Wrighton of Heavy Metal fame. Creepshow 2, which was written by Romero and featured a cameo from King, was going to be adapted to comics, but issues with the rights ultimately canceled the project. However, artist Kelley Jones has released his work on "The Raft" segment adaptation. Creepshow 3, made without Romero or King, has not been adapted, and given the film's overwhelmingly negative critical reception, most people would probably say that's a good thing.

10 Things Only Marvel Comics Fans Know About The Living Tribunal
By Darby Harn | Screen Rant
June 2, 2022

Collage-Maker-02-Jun-2022-10.02-AM.jpg

The new trailer for Thor: Love And Thunder added to the growing list of cameos for The Living Tribunal, a powerful cosmic being from Marvel Comics. The entity appears as a statue behind Jane Foster in the trailer, which is the third such Easter egg associated with the character in the MCU in just the last year. The Living Tribunal cameoed in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Loki.

Comic book fans know The Living Tribunal plays a major role in the Marvel Universe, presiding over the entire multiverse. This makes the entity a key figure for the MCU to explore and many comic book storylines likely play into upcoming movies and series. Given the entity's connection to the multiverse and different gods, Thor: Love and Thunder offers a chance to meet the character properly for the first time.

Popeye is getting a makeover at age 93
By Michael Cavna | MSN/The Washington Post
June 3, 2022

AAY24m1.img

Popeye may be famous for the confident credo “I yam what I yam,” but that doesn’t mean the Sailor Man says no to a good makeover.

The spinach-gulping and bottle-armed comics hero turned 93 in January. Now, on Sunday, he’ll get a fresh look.

King Features Syndicate is turning over the helm of its weekly Sunday “Popeye” comic to Randy Milholland, a 46-year-old Texas cartoonist and a true student of the character who launched his career as a webcomic creator two decades ago. King says its new “Popeye” will roll out to dozens of newspapers and is also available via its Comics Kingdom site.

10 Best Versions Of Catwoman From The Comics, Ranked
By Cole Kennedy | CBR
June 3, 2022

Catwoman-Selina-Kyle.jpg

One year after Batman made his comic book debut in Detective Comics #27 in 1939, Catwoman made her debut in Batman #1 alongside the Joker. Catwoman has truly been there since the beginning, and she has become an integral part of the Batman mythos and one of the most popular characters in DC Comics.

Catwoman, a.k.a. Selina Kyle, originally referred to as "The Cat," was a cat burglar who escaped the Caped Crusader in many of her earliest appearances. In DC's main continuity, she has grown into an incredibly complex character with deep ties to Batman. As DC ventured further into its multiverse, more and more alternate versions of Catwoman were introduced, some of whom were creatures of the night or superheroes themselves.

It would be nice if The Gifted was re-imagined. I enjoyed the show but it was mostly too timid in its presentation in my opinion.

Then the show got cancelled--just as Jamie Chung's character Blink FINALLY got control of her transportation abilities. That still pisses me off to this day...
