Same here. I don't understand why so many don't like her. She's as believable as anyone else would be in that role, and I find her very attractive as well.

Once this post gets approved, will someone please explain to me why it's "Awaiting moderator approval"?
I'm back from a fantasy draft with my boys! :p

The reply was likely delayed due to you quoting my post, which contains the naughty word 'petition'. So do not quote this post because it will get the same treatment by the site's language filter. :)

Why is that a naughty word? Oh well. I'm sure it was added for a reason. Imagine a mod using a naughty word. wow. lol

@DallasEast , I wouldn't have thought that to be such a troublesome word.
It is a leftover from the old "We Can Rid of Jerry Jones With a Petition!!!" nonsense from years ago. Folks were on personal crusades here on the site using the word obsessively instead of using that energy in the real world trying to accomplished something useful. Later, it was used for other insane proposals not having to do with the team. So the word was shelved.

See Emilia Clarke As Amber Heard’s Aquaman Replacement After She’s Chosen By Fans
By James Brizuela | Giant Freakin Robot
September 3, 2022

emilia-clarke-solo-a-star-wars-story-900x509.jpg

Fans have long been clamoring for Amber Heard to be replaced in Aquaman 2. Even back before the conclusion of her trial against ex-husband Johnny Depp, Heard was part of a campaign that saw millions of signatures as part of a petition to have her removed from the film. Coincidentally, the film has been delayed yet again to December, leaving many to wonder if a new actress has been brought in as Mera. Fans have already chosen a replacement, as Emilia Clarke was placed in the costume via some fan art, and she looks quite good in it. You can see the image below:

Emilia Clarke rose to superstardom when she portrayed Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones. Her character was beloved by all, right up until the last season of the hit TV series. That led to her being indoctrinated into many of the best franchises. Clarke appeared in Star Wars, as she was cast in Solo. She is also set to make her MCU debut, as she is going to be in Secret Invasion, though her role is still unknown at this time. If Clarke were to jump into a DC role, she would accomplish something that no other actress has. From the above picture, she has our vote.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was meant to release in March of 2023 but has since been pushed back to Christmas 2023. That is a huge jump, which has led many to believe that we could be seeing a new Mera cast. Amber Heard could be replaced by Emilia Clarke or some other actress between that time. Having more than a year for reshoots certainly is enough time to bring in someone new. Though none of those rumors have been substantiated yet, we would not be shocked if Heard was completely cut out of the film. DC has been having plenty of issues lately, especially because of the Warner Bros. Discovery merger, and recasting Mera would certainly go over well with fans.

I’ll be honest, I could care less. I’m not sure I even saw an Amber Hears movie before her infamous trial. She’s still Mera the fake redhead to me. What’s the worse that could happen. A poop in the ocean?

Here’s 9 actresses who can play Storm in the MCU
By Demi Phillips | We Got This Covered
Septeber 5, 2022

BDFCC25D-D9BF-4BE3-8AFB-ABE1B4B333DC.jpeg

Rumors of the X-Men making their way to the MCU have been circulating for a while now. The fans have expectedly begun to cast their favorite stars in the many roles that make up the famous mutant team. Specifically, there is growing anticipation as to who will don the white locs of the iconic mutant heroine, Storm.

While Halle Berry brought the role of the vibrant leader to life in previous X-Men live adaptations, it’s pretty certain that Marvel Studios will go a different route and cast someone else for the role of the thunderous superhero in any upcoming versions.

China Anne McClain, 24
Keke Palmer, 29
Zoë Kravitz, 33
Anna Diop, 34
Janelle Monáe, 36
DeWanda Wise, 38
Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, 41
Freema Agyeman 43
Naomie Harris, 46

________________

It is wrong of me to apply ageism but I would want the actress earning the role to keep it for awhile. My first two choices would have been Harris and Agyeman, in that order, if they were younger.

I would LOVE picking Keke Palmer. It is a bias of mine but I think her career has been as bright as it could have been. However, I cannot picture her as Ororo.

Not really familiar with McClain but the rest are good candidates in my book, including Diop. That said, I see Kravitz as a much better Catwoman than as Storm.

I have seen Monáe play both serene and fierce roles. Put me on the spot and I would pick her as Marvel's mutant weather goddess.

Spider-Man: No Way Home Wins Box Office Weekend With Return to Theaters
By Jeremy Dick | MovieWeb
September 4, 2022

Spider-Man-No-Way-Home-Tom-Holland-Andrew-Garfield-and-Tobey-Maguire-Final-Battle-Official-(1).jpg

The extended cut of Spider-Man: No Way Home has pushed the hit superhero movie back into the top spot at the box office. When the film came out in December of last year, it smashed records to become one of the most successful movies of all time. Sony and Marvel no doubt knew there was more money to be made with a special re-release, leading to this new extended cut of the film dubbed Spider-Man: No Way Home - The More Fun Stuff Version.

Spider-Man: No Way Home - The More Fun Stuff Version snagged $6 million in North American theaters, and as it was a pretty quiet weekend at the box office, that gives the movie the No. 1 spot. It had been duking it out with another record-smashing sequel that had similarly dominated theaters with its own theatrical run, as Top Gun: Maverick lands at No. 2 with $5.49 million earned. Let's just take a brief moment to now consider the total domestic grosses for each film, as Spidey has now drawn more than $810.7 million ($1.9 billion worldwide) while Maverick is up to over $698.8 million ($1.4 billion worldwide).

Of course it's gonna be a to each his own ..opinion and view but ..
Brie Larsons' Capt Marvel role was quite the opposite to me ...i found her quite dull, stiff and uninspiring

It's not enuff for an actress to be just ' attractive "... it's always easier to find just a pretty face, ..

But place a gorgeous actress that has captivating acting skills to their respective character roles ..especially major superhero roles
and you have the top elements and ingredients that make that character role stand out even more so.
it becomes stamped , and not someone that has to be sugar coated to try to force them on viewers 'as is" .. just because she's a pretty face.

I've seen the works of other female superhero roles that stand out as both very pretty faces, but yet possessing acting skills to
make their super female roles appealing and compelling .. especially if director does not brutalize the film and roles so much that
its' just too difficult to overcome acting and pretty faces ( see Hall Berry's Catwoman)

I don't see a problem with her acting either. I thought she showed exactly the personality I'd expect from someone like Captain Marvel.

I have read enough individual audience reviews to know your opinion of Brie Larson's portrayal is shared by a significant number of moviegoers. Personally, I saw her version of Carol Danvers in her movie like this:

  • The person she once was much more personable and outgoing. This aspect of her life was presented during memory flashes when she and NIck Fury first met in the roadside diner.
  • That person was kidnapped and vigorously reconditioned mentally to act and think she was Kree--a rigid, demanding and repressive race whose only similarity to her mindset was military discipline.
  • Her altered personality was not who she once was. Her former self was buried deep and kept conflicting with her Kree conditioning.
  • Her inner battle was seen throughout the movie, as her previous self kept slowly chipping away at who the Supreme Intelligence made her into, little by little but never completely.
  • Avengers: Endgame does not give her much screentime overall but there is a bit softer version of Carol seen at the beginning given the plot's circumstances. The ending sequence was all-out fighting so I do not think it would be right to judge her as 'Carol' at the point of the movie.
  • Carol is much closer to her 'former self' in her Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings cameo.
  • She is even more 'Earther like' as seen in her Ms. Marvel cameo.

In my opinion, Larson's acting shows a purposeful evolution in her character. I acknowledge why others say she has deadpanned it but I disagree. My anticipation is that she will add a few more layers to Carol in The Marvels next year as well.

Now, let's talk about that Elisabeth Olsen's photo. So, out of ALL the still shots you could choose from in WandaVision and Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, you chose that one. Is it fair to say you prefer the classic Scarlet Witch look over her MCU one? :p

yep.. that Scarlet Witch one is absolute classic, 'ole school Wanda -original Avengers, hot, red and very pizzazzy,-like .
i'll be willing to bet we''ll eventually find it again among the upcoming local Halloween parties ...:p

I had heard Disney-Marvel wanted to expand Wanda (Elisabeth Olsen) more to the front line since losing Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans and unfortunately Chad Boswick.
Her role and presence in Dr. Strange- Madness, was a brilliant work of art. Especially casted as a villain, than the usual feline hero .

In fact, I wouldn't put it out of the question that she could eventually end up with her own solo film in the near future,. .just as we saw with Scarlet Johannson's Black Widow, which
kudos to her, as usually solo female action leads don't hit big at the box office,

Sorry, but i'm still quite convinced that Larson's Capt Marvel film flat out rode the tail pipe winds off the huge anticipation of Avengers End game; Would she have done quite as well
(a stunning 153 mil opening week) so before the Infinity War/End game films. ?

You may not want to hold your breath waiting for that to happen. Johansson was a combination A-lister and enjoyed distinctive screentime from Iron Man 2 forward. Not sure Olsen could get that type of studio backing based on her career and her MCU work.

Half the world's movie audience population is female.

Forget Avengers: Endgame buildup for a moment. Think Wonder Woman follow-up instead.

An actress in the title role and playing a major theatrical movie superhero? Such events are commonplace for an actor. For an actress? That is rare.

Moviegoers are people. And people want to see representations of themselves on the screen.

I think the fundamental reason and source behind Captain Marvel's exceptional box office is pretty simple. Heck. It would not surprise me Johannson would not have received the exact same treatment, using the exact same movie that was eventually released, IF Disney had made and released it years earlier. Black Widow had its question marks as well but its major box office hindrance was both the timing of and how it was released in my highest opinion.

- If it was based off female audience population, there would have already been a successful trend in female action films.

- My theory is the astounding boom effect of superhero comic movies of today (especially Marvel) which to this day are flat out conquering and dominating
the attention of general viewing audience and population, in both movie theaters and streaming action.
Much to the dismay and frustration of opposing, competiting studios, directors and even actors.

- Marvel has always had quite a very huge fan base, maybe the equal if not bigger than Star Wars, imo,..but now the massive boom effect of the Marvel superhero film era generation
has led to attracting and drawing even the non-Marvel comic followers, to the big screen and streaming trend.

- Wonder Woman, (especially a “ DC comics “ female superhero film) - who easily succeeded both Batman vs Superman and Justice League box office numbers
was already a legendary popular superhero figure,. Even the audience that wasn’t really big comic followers knew who WW was, and how popular she was.

- Then came the glowing movie critic reviews - and we know how hugely influential they can be on viewing audiences - to go along with WW directional debut per Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot’s
appearance-look and performance in her solo debut as WW.

- Black Widow solo film(and success) clearly fed off the smashing popular success of Avengers, Capt America and Iron Man, .. so the massive build up and her character likeability
that led to her eventual solo film was
Obvious. And I’ve already address what I thought led to the box office success of Capt. Marvel.

- Regardless of how I feel about Larson and the Capt. Marvel movie (yes, I’m still reeling, disgusted about origin of Nick Fury’s cat scratched eye (Aaargh !)
If it took the Avengers-Thanos saga to make a female superhero stand out among rare monster box office hits, ..( that could help lead to even more solo female hit movies)
* Then so be it ..!!

Let the flood gates burst wide open for even more solo female smash hits …Black Panther (shukira) _Wakanda forever ... She-Hulk series ?... She-Hulk series ?
upcoming " Iron Heart " series debut..... a possible Scarlett Witch solo movie ? .. … Storm movie or series ? …
.... Etc. Etc.

MCU Theory Reveals She-Hulk's Avengers Team (It's Not What You Expect)

BY KEVIN ERDMANN

While Jennifer Walters' She-Hulk doesn't seem interested in joining the established Avengers, it's possible she could help form a brand new team.

Rather than joining a version of the Avengers as they currently stand, Jennifer Walters could help usher a brand-new version of Earth's Mightiest Heroes following her introduction in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Although She-Hulk is the cousin of Bruce Banner, she can't help but view his story as a cautionary tale, showing disinterest in becoming a superhero like the Hulk. This includes joining a team like the Avengers. However, she might be more receptive to helping kickstart a brand-new version in Los Angeles with an MCU version of the West Coast Avengers.

https://screenrant.com/she-hulk-join-west-coast-avengers-mcu-theory/amp/

Personally, I’d love to see the West Coast Avengers brought to life. I feel that they were the Guardians before the Guardians, and with that team wrapping up soon, I’d like to see another light-hearted group to take their place.

.... Etc. Etc.

WELL! When I'm wrong, I'm wrong. I was certain female audiences drove Captain Marvel's box office. Perhaps that was true worldwide but the domestic numbers do not back up my assumption.

However, I do not discount any gender buying movie tickets. I consider things relative as far as 'trend' is concerned when factoring in gender.

Wjel860.jpg

Above are films over the past decade, that are (at least) partially action genre based, headlined by actresses. [Note: 2018 is omitted. I considered 2018's Ocean's 8 but did not want to invest more time digging up gender share info.] It really surprised me that Captain Marvel was male dominated, with a freaking 57% share!

Non-Star Wars/Marvel films tracked better with female audiences. That is what I anticipated and contributed to my shock about Captain Marvel attendance in particular. Star Wars movies are deeply rooted in male audience attendance, so it was not shocking to me at all neither Rey nor Jyn Erso flipped those percentages, lol.

Now, here's the thing about the "legendary" assumption. By comparison, Princess Diana, established decades earlier and enjoyed a ton of television success in the 1970's, was more well-known than Katniss Everdeen. Her core audience are comic book fans after all. Even so, Katniss' films were better received and performed better overall than Diana's because they were produced better. The New Kid on the Block was more successful overall than the DC Legend due to better movies (WW84 is still a crying shame).

Movie critics' reviews are beneficial over the short-term. They rarely sustain box office profitability over a theatrical run. Each movie's quality does or does not do that for themselves in attracting initial and repeat moviegoers--or turning them off.

Which brings me to Black Widow. I cannot agree the film was truly successful when considering production costs and the sub $400 million box office it took in worldwide. All the smashing success of Captain America, etc., would have been more helpful to BW if it had gotten the boost from Captain America: Civil War--which is exactly where it fits after in the MCU timeline. Instead, Disney/Marvel waited until after the events of Avengers: Endgame and untimely circumstances (which will not be discussed here) to release the movie direct to Disney+. That was not a good strategy on Kevin Feige & Company's part regardless that they did not own a crystal ball.

I will be the first to extend props to you on a Scarlet Witch solo movie if it ever happens. Another television series? Maybe. I give a movie's chances about 3% of ever happening. On the other hand, I would give Storm solo film around a 15% chance without knowing anything about Disney's plans for the mutants. And my percentage would go up or down based upon both the actress picked for Ororo Munroe AND what type of projects the studio will finally set up for the mutants to return to the big screen.

I kinda feel the same way, found her kinda dull and uninspiring as Captain Marvel. I've seen her in a couple other things and liked her well enough, but her portrayal as Captain Marvel just feels kinda 'meh'

I like the other actresses, you posted and their superhero portrayals, but Brie Larson just felt flat to me.

They would probably have to go younger, just based on how long it will be before they actually get around to making an X-Men movie and then add a few more years by the time they make a sequel. :muttley:
